  • Last Friday, new Canadian airline Canada Jetlines visited Calgary for the first time ever, operating a familiarization flight with travel agents on board. This A320 is their very first airplane and flew in from Toronto, overnighted, and then left the following day.
    It's always great to see new airlines enter the market here in Canada, and Jetlines is a welcome addition to the mix after hearing about them for so many years. Very cool to finally see them in Calgary, and enjoy the video!

    Quite a few low cost carriers starting up in Canada. Hopefully this means domestic airfares will become more competitive.

    • @mofoyul
      @mofoyul 2 года назад +4

      Don’t count on it. Many similar airlines have come and gone for the past 3 decades, and most have failed. The Canadian market is too small for two full service airlines (even Westjet is throwing in the towel and refocusing their strategy on Western Canada). Until Canada’s population hit about 50-60M, it will be difficult to maintain more than 1.5 full service carriers, and more than 1-2 “no frills” carriers.
      In addition, government fees and taxes such as airport rents, fuel taxes, etc are much higher than in other jurisdictions which forces airlines to charge higher fares.

    • @CaptureKing247
      @CaptureKing247 2 года назад +4

      @@mofoyul WestJet is not throwing in the towel out east. Don't let that announcement fool you. They are using Swoop to help compete with these new airlines out east. They also bought Sunwing. When the sale is officially approved, they will use both Sunwing and Swoop to maintain their presence in the east, but at lower operating costs

    • @mofoyul
      @mofoyul Год назад +1

      @@CaptureKing247 I’ve watched the same story for the last 30 years. Canadian Airlines, Canada 3000, Royal Airlines, Astoria, Canjet, Jetsgo, Roots Air….. shall I go on? Canada is just not big enough for this many airlines. As much as I would love to see more competition, Canada is a small market with high operating costs. Westjet tried to become a full service carrier like AC and realized the market just isn’t big enough. They tried going after the eastern market about about 10 years ago, but business travellers turned away from them. Not enough frequency, poor FF program, inability to connect with customers in Quebec.
      Trust me, I won’t get fooled again.

    • @CaptureKing247
      @CaptureKing247 Год назад +3

      @@mofoyul I'm not sure why you're arguing against yourself. I never said Canada could support multiple full service airlines. I was just pointing out that WestJet isn't throwing in the towel out east as you claim. They own LCC Swoop and leisure airline Sunwing. The WestJet Group will use their other lower cost airlines to maintain their presence in the East. And that will make them better prepared to fight against these new airlines and Porter. Call it a shift in strategy vs throwing in the towel

    I am still very skeptical all of these LLC's can survive in the Canadian market given the sudden abundance of carriers. Personally see a merger down the road or one of them seising operations unfortunately. Hope Jetlines can continue but they are up against MAJOR competitors in Toronto with AC and soon to be Porter, who I am still convinced will give all a run for their money. Also expecting AC to make a formal announcement soon on the future of Rouge as its strategy doesn't seem to be the best fit to complete against true LLC's. Great vid!!

      Just flew Lynx a few weeks back, gotta say they’re looking good. Flair has been around for two years and Lynx for just a few months, however with Jetlines starting up they are looking to compete with sun travel like Air Transat, with the merger of Sunwing and Westjet I think Canada should be fine for airlines, mergers probably won’t happen.

      @@thatweirdguy_ben It will be interesting to see how WestJet utilizes Sunwing's brand and fleet. Merging it into Swoop to have a unified leisure brand makes sense to me personally but we will see.

    As always I wish the small airlines all the best success. As a regular air traveller I'm sick and tired of being gouged by AC and WJ. The only people who like AC or WJ are usually the ones who's companies are paying for their seats and the employee collects the airmiles or credits.

    • @HweolRidda
      @HweolRidda 2 года назад

      In winter I try to book an airline that has at least 3 flights per day back home from my destination, not necessarily direct. If I take an LCC and my flight is cancelled due to a snow storm, I could spend 5 days before a seat home is available. So I don't exactly like AC, but they are frequently my first choice for personal travel.
