I showed up to a test site with my cousin a couple years ago to test for a job, it was claimed to be the usual bell & branch setup. Boy was we surprised when these "7016" rods was tossed our way. 🤣 Needless to say our leads were rolled up pretty quick, haven't failed a test so bad ever.

    • @Gilmore304

He don’t know . If I’m guessing they’re rod size and he wasn’t used to them and if not cared fir they draw moisture really bad

@jaythemachine3845 Good question, some gas companies want the roots run with them, instead of with a 6010. This particular gas company is the only one we have had to test us with them. I know some people would think it is similar to a 7018, and they don't burn similarly at all.

When I did this, I used the back side of the rod as a spacer. I whip out and come back in, as long as your puddle is still res, you won’t trap slag. I also used heavy land

Try driving a wedge like in each quarter or about about 4 or five inches above where your welding to keep from slamming shut on you! Those little wedges or cut a normal one in half to make two skinnier ones. We tested on 250 wall though that 375 wall tends to be a little more forgiving!! Play with the thickness of your landing as well!!

You want atleast a heavy 1/8” gap with a 1/16” land. Slight side to side movement and stay in the puddle. It will almost lay itself in like a downhill root. And def hit your stops for the root atleast

I've welded pipe for about 36yrs. From Down Hill, to Up Hill(oil refinery, Chemical Plants, and High Pressure Steam Lines) those usually are Up Hiil welding procedures, we usually used the Tig method for our Roots and Hot Pass, then switch over to Stick. I've only ran a few Roots with a 7018, and it's a bitch if you never done that. I would use a little under a 1/8" Gap and a decent landing to minimize burn through, and a 1/8 Rod at around 115-120amps. Now when we welded on main steam lies in a power house it's a Tig root, and two more Tig passes then we switch over to 8018 witch have more Chrome in the Rod because the Pipe is 80%-90% Chrome. The wall thickness is around 2 1/2"- 3" Thick. We would run 5/32 8018 Rods once you got your root and two-three other passes done and xrayed. That's a whole other animal, the pipe has to be pre heated to 400° and kept between 400°-700° while welding it.

I just don’t know why they gotta go and ruin a good thing as far as 6010/8010 and sometimes 7018 of course. I ran some of that 9045 for Henkels and McCoy under Enbridge last year and that s$&t was weird too. Downhill lo-hy. Luckily some good hands from Michigan gave me pointers how to run it and my Miller 400 pro ran it nice but to hell with that 7016 🥴

I had done this test twice first one i passed the bend test but failed the Nick Break Test, Second test i passed both 2G and 5G
    7016 on 90mm (4") NB pipe and 5mm (.200") wall.
The thing that i noticed about it was the land and gap was a lot more critical then i had first thought the thinner the wall thickness.
I just floated the rod over the front part of the puddle and made shore that the puddle was filling both bevels and the bead was not to convex to trap slag on the toes and filling up the root gap.
Some guys were saying to think of it like using a calking gun.
We were using 2.5mm Kobe lb52 Electrodes on 70 amps DCEP + 2G was 2 bead cap and 5G was a weave cap.
    Anyway good luck man
