Learn how to edit black and white photos in Photoshop using a slightly different method than you might expect. Rather than using the Black and White adjustment layer, this lesson shows you the advantage of using Gradient Maps instead to create dramatic black and white images that are more captivating and eye-catching. With the addition of dodging and burning, these techniques are the ultimate way to make stand-out black and white effects in any image! Enjoy :)
Your presentation is excellent. Clear, to the point, well edited and devoid of filler. Well done!
You are among the best photoshop teachers on youtube, Brandon. Thank you for this video, and stay safe.
I appreciate that! Thank you
soo true!
Thank you for this video and "Cheat Sheet." I love black and white photography and this has been one of, if not the most, helpful videos that I've watched so far. It's easily given me what I consider more "professional" results.
That has to be the most simplistic yet effective black and white editing I’ve seen, this will be my new way of adding life to my B&W imagery! Thanks for the cheat sheet also, very helpful. You’ve got a new subscriber!
Welcome 👋🏻😃
Learned something new today. Thanks!
Wonderful lesson. Fluent, fast, fun !!
Great tutorial Brendan. Thanks.
You are welcome!
Very helpful methods here. Thanks for your cheat sheet. Great video without too much talk.
You are welcome!
Nice tutorial explained really well Brendan! Years ago I downloaded an action for this from somewhere and I use it for every b&w conversion. This action also adds a channel mixer adjustment layer clipped to main image and under gradient map layer that adds another additional layer of control for tone and contrast.
Thats interesting I will need to try adding that in one of my photos! Thanks for sharing
Great one Brendan!! 👏
Glad you enjoyed!
Thank you soo much for the video! cheers from Poland :)
I’ve struggled with B&W images…until now…Thank you for this and your PDF Cheat Sheet share!
You are welcome!
Excellent video.
Great video. Thank you!
You are welcome!
Aahhh now I get what you were saying in the previous Gradient video.
Cheers
Best tutorial
Excellent !
😃
Thanks you. Also subscribed! Do you have a video on bland skies converted into B&W perhaps?
Very Nice Brendan
Glad you enjoyed!
We call this the long way around the barn.

Use the following in Adobe Camera Raw
Temp = 14750
Tint - 75
Contrast 50%
50% white/50% black
Adjust exposure, highlights and shadows
Then curves if needed
This will get you to a better starting place for your own preset starting point!
There’s a lot of things incorrect about the final image. In the thumbnail you’ve completely blown out the highlights. That is a no no.
IMO there are lots of B&W photos I like from other photographers with blown out highlights or crushed blacks. You can use the technique in this video to avoid that if you prefer but there is no rule book for whats right or wrong. Photo editing is subjective just as photography. Thats why I teach processes so you can do with them as you wish to create an effect you’re happy with regardless of my result.
This didn't work. Right off the bat the image just looked inverted.
Sooo... no one's gonna be honest about what he did to the photo he used for the thumbnail... ok.
The thumbnail has contrast added using Curves (basic S curve). This is done to all my thumbnails to make them catch your eye more. Besides that all is done using the same techniques from the tutorial. I don’t believe it is misleading when you can make the same effect using whats discussed in the lesson. Just do more D&B or bring in the black and white points for the gradient map.
Too many "Secret" videos out these days. There was nothing secret about this.
Well if you didnt know this technique its not immediately obvious. Anything can be a secret if you share something someone else may be surprised to know. You may not be surprised, but others may.
Whats the secret to being healthy? There isnt one, just he active and eat well
Whats the secret to saving time at work? There isnt one, its just being more organized by doing X, Y, Z
Thats my perspective on it at least. Therefore Im still calling it a secret 😎
@@BrendanWilliamsTutorialsignore them, there's always some arsehole who wants to be the expert, but the rest of us understand you have to play the RUclips algorithm to get heard above the noise by using titles like this. Keep up the good work.
It's easier to just use some mono film!
