As soon as she heard "perm", the lightbulb went off!
And in the shower!!
Read, not heard
I love it 👏👏💪💪
It was so funny chutney what did you do earlier that day? Went to the gym got a perm and came home- which I found hilarious when L kept saying “so you got in the shower” and you didn’t hear the gunshots because you were in the shower?! and then when I she said she’s getting a perm previously that day she said what the fu--hold the phone! She turns around you got in the shower after you got a perm? She’s thinking to herself anyone who knows about hair knows you don’t get in the shower after a perm lol! And the judge said “she has made it clear she was in the shower” she says it sarcastic way- so great
ATL I REMBER THIS
loved this scene the part where chutney mentions getting perm the way elle's face changes knowing she's about to exonerate her sister 💖
Chutney's stepmother, Ellie's sorority "sister".
Some play chess and others play checkers. Elle first started playing checkers then in that moment it was chess she was playing and with that piece of testimony she checkmate Chutney
Chutney 😂😂
Also the dog jumps up when the girl mentions that she was specifically washing her hair :D
It shows that she incriminated herself with the statement
Elle taught me that you can have both brains AND beauty, without needing to choose!
Most people have neither
Wait srsly why do I see you everywhere?
Well I mean tbh her "knowledge" is limited to a very specific area - like fashion and styling. I doubt she would be able to find all guilty people just by this knowledge base.
@DontActLikeGoodPeople I can like tell Elle is very adaptable and open to learning, so I think she can do
@DontActLikeGoodPeople she still graduated Harvard with honors, that says a lot about how intelligent and adaptable she is.
I like the detail where Elle made the math of the number of perms since 12yo without any second thought.
Its easy maths to do on the spot. And she was off a couple of years. 26-12=14. 14x2=28
@sophieirwin3497 - Actually you're off by 1 year.
12 years old = 2 perms
13 years old = 2 perms
14 years old = 2 perms
26 years old = 2 perms
15 years of 2 perms = 30 perms total
So Elle was right 😊
@sophieirwin3497 well you're actually the one a little off. you didn't account for the two perms she had when she was 12 (since you subtracted 12 from 30). the correct way to calculate it is to actually subtract 11 from 30. which gives us 15, multiply that by 2 and that gives us 30 perms.
It's not math, the script said 30, so she said 30. It's not that deep.
@MatBaconMC The actor says 30 because the script says 30. The character says 30 because in the movie Elle is a super smart girl.
Love the fact that at the beginning, elle seems a bit stressed and just tries to get something, but after she said "perm," elle realized the plot hole in her story and became extra confident. Interesting thing to notice.
That's actually a technique used by a number of young real life lawyers. (There's a good fictional depiction in Prima Facie.) They stumble around with the witness, give the impression of being fresh out of training and clueless and lull the witness into a false sense of security. Then as soon as the witness makes a slip they dive in.
@timrollpickering Wait, that's smart 🙂🙃🙂🙃.
If you watch legal movies, or series like Law and Order, you'll find the ADAs and the lawyers often do that trick, appear as if they ask random question and are absolutely clueless and when the witness slips, they go all in for the attack.
People weighing in who studied at SVU are hilarious.
To be fair this was her first trial so id be nervous af too
I love that the dog gets it before everyone in the room. It’s immediately “washing her hair?!”
But by then she hadn't yet stated that she got a perm...
@josephthomas-oliobi6588 the dawg could smell the ammonium thiglocolate 💯💯
the dog's been getting a perm since she was 2.
😂
@josephthomas-oliobi6588 But you can see she has a perm, so...
- You've got in a Harvard low school?
- What, like it's hard?
Yes!
Harvard 'low' school 😅🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@shlokam_srivastava.wannbeloser Linda cardelini is wendy Corduroy.
😂😂😂
😂
Chutney did not expect Elle to know about perm maintenance. You could see how she was blindsided by Elle’s barrage of questions afterwards. 😂😂😂
The "barrage of questions" is a known lawyer tactic to confuse the witness into an excited utterance.
@kegginstructure Which was what she got
@kegginstructure like jinkies?
Her & her friends are soo iconic I can’t
Agree! Giving the audience the nasty stink eye when they laughed on Elle. Or trying to give the answer to Elle's question. Above all, they never questioned her goal to get to Harvard and supported her whenever they could. Iconic friends.
And even her mom happy she gave a compliment. This whole movie had green flags every where
That’s the best part. They may not fully understand what’s happening with the court case but they’re there to support their girl. That is real sisterhood.
2:46 you can see the boost of confidence in her walk, it's amazing!
It's really good acting
3:42 even the prosecutor was like “hold up” 😂
I'm 67 yrs. old and still love this movie. Thank you Lord for giving not only brains but beauty to your select.
I'm 74 and I still love the movie, too.
Me too. I love it because I was a hair stylist and knew the rules.
Sadly not all of us are so lucky to look like Reese.
I love how her beauty knowledge ended up helping her. Just goes to show you that knowledge is power.!
Just goes to prove that no knowledge is truly worthless even if you aren't sure at the moment what it is worth. Some little fact will pop up in your brain and turn you from zero to hero.
Her degree was in fashion merchandising and the Delta Nu sorority was all about fashion and beauty. It's why Elle referred to Cosmo as "the Bible" when delivering a basket of goodies to Brooke in prison.
2:28 the moment Elle knew that she has just checkmate her opponent
She looks so calm at first but then she was so scared when she knew about the perms
It’s because she’s was nervous at first
@kevinponsrodz I think they meant the daughter
This is the movie where Reese Witherspoon gave a huge recognition. ❤
to whom?
@olyacarell6434 my money is on the dog
I still get goosebump
1:36 even if she was in the shower, the sound of a gunshot is loud, she probably would’ve heard it.
Exactly
Not necessarily. Possible trauma dumping/story warning so please skip this comment if you don't have the capacity or not interested.
I was in the shower when my dad shot a shotgun indoors and I did not hear it, probably because water running over my ears. I just remembered coming out of the bathroom and he had a shotgun in his hand and there was a hole in a door.
4:04 so speechless barely had time to say objection 😝
I'm coming a little late to the party (I can't believe it's more than 20 years since "Legally Blonde" first was showing in the theaters) but I just saw it a couple of weeks ago. What a great film! This is one of my favorite scenes.
And LB 2 was also very good. Watch it.
@Ana_Ines3420
I saw that one later (am a nerd about watching things in order). I liked it, too, but #1 was better, maybe because it was the original.
She got up, got a latte, went to the gym, got a perm, and ordered the Code Red.
😂😂😂😂😂 I want answers, Colonel Jessup!
Maaaaaaaaan A Few Good Men courtroom scenes are the best!! I always watch that clip, too!!!
I don’t fully believe that story. Why would you go to the gym and a perm with just a latte in your stomach? That would take all day.
2:30 love the confidence change here by Elle
3:08 I assume that's Chutney's mother going "Ah!"
That was Elle’s mom
No it was Chutney’s mom..played by Raquel Welch 😊
Everything about this scene is masterful. The lighting, the closeups on Elle when she’s grilling Chutney, the sound-you can hear every little detail from her little quiet nervous expressions to her confident little snap after learning chutney was lying-the way Bruiser pops out of the purse, and even the Disney type kiss between Jennifer Coolidge and her beau at the end.
I have respect for people like you, so aware, so appreciative. You, like me, enjoy things a bit more than others because we see quality and effort in the details!
Not the ammonium thioglycolate! 😂
This movie alone is why beauty school students rarely fail the written section on perms for their licensing exams. I had a knack for picking up the more traditional subjects like physiology and chemistry easier than the others, but literally everyone I knew; even the ones who struggled to pass their quizzes and tests, never got this section wrong lol.
😂😂😂
Brutus ( little dog) knew that Miss Windom was done for!
*Bruiser
@1:59 - in a brilliant move by the director (and screen writer) the dog barks at that moment. This bark signals a turn of the tides, as the case goes from losing to winning at that very moment. Somehow the dog knew. In fact, I would even say that the dog was trying to communicate that moment of exoneration to Elle Woods. In fact, I'd even say that the dog was the brains in this partnership, which is why Elle takes it absolutely everywhere that she needs help.
Exactly! He knew about washing your hair within 24 hours of getting a perm!
@allansuaza😂😂
😅😅😅😅😅
Serena and Margot never joined in the laughter and showed hostility towards them😢
They are just as loyal and unyielding in their friendship as Elle is💖i’m very proud of them and want to emulate their example👏🏻
I realized why this video popped up on my feed just now (4:31) the character that "Chutney" is pointing at is none other than the same actress for Grace in The Rookie!!
Yes! She was also in the final destination 1 (and 2)
Yep thats Ali Larter ❤
Underrated part of this scene is Linda Cardellini’s range: she can play so many different roles
She really was fantastic in Brokeback
Chutney made the common criminal mistake of getting too specific with her story - if she hadn't said she was washing her hair and just left her story at "I was in the shower" then she could have explained away her curls being intact by saying she wore a shower bonnet.
I love how proud and supportive her mom and two best friends were of her.
Jennifer Coolidge’s plays a hairdresser instead of Reese Witherspoon’s mom in the movie, but I totally agree that the way she and the best friends back her up is great. 😊
I like that she complimented chutney first before bringing her down lol 😂
I love Elle’s support system, her friends are so cute… and her soon to be new man doesn’t miss a beat when it comes to encouraging her. They melt my heart ❤️
I love how chutney goes from kind of cocky and arrogant to terrified n a matter of minutes especially when she realizes she scrwed up. Good acting by Linda Cardellini
4:18 - I didn’t mean to shoot him!
4:20 - I thought it was you walking through the door!
😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
2:36 - in the shower
🦙🖍️❌🥁☎️🎵🎼
@zydration3538 1:56 - 2:31 🙄🙄🙄
When Elle kept asking Chutney about the shower over & over. I was like
“Oh my God, stop asking her about the shower!” 😂😂😂
4:34
I love Emmett's look here. It's the look of "You did it!"
2:41 i need such friends in my life
When she mentioned the perm, that's the moment she F up
"You do the math".... And Elle did it! (30 perms)
2:44 when elle laughs with embarrassment and says “yes ur honor”. That was such a purposeful move love it! Everyone let their guard down
The only one not surprised is him
That face that the judge made at 3:22 was hilarious
This scene always brings a sort of satisfaction to me
It doesn’t make sense how chutney did claim he got shot while she was in the shower but she “didn’t hear it” like I’m sure u can easily hear a gun shot from downstairs
Exactly. What, the sound of the shower was too loud to hear the gun shot? That’s nonsense
@ like guns are loud af definitely louder than u listening to music on a speaker while in the shower lol
Exactly what i was thinking, my first time watching this scene. No one's alarm bells rung off when she said that? A bullet breaks many sound barriers.
That's why it wasn't just showering but washing her hair that was crucial to her story. She needed to explain why her shower was so long AND why her hearing might've been especially impaired
@PrestigeLearningIk but she thought Elle was dumb to believe it lol
Chutney? Funniest name ever 🤣🤣🤣 might as well name their next child Dosa
4:29 3 women saying O.M.G for 3 stars in the Philippines
holy reach 😭😭
Elle ate and left NO CRUMBS 😭🙌🏼💅
I like the way there is early reinforcement at Elle's expense that "yes she was washing her hair". Because it makes the switch have way more impact
this will go down in history as the MOST ICONIC TRIAL SCENE FOR A SERIES IN ALL TIMEEEE
Marissa Tomei would like a word: search for THE DEFENSE IS WRONG, its a very close tie
My cousin vinny would like a word
Uhhhhhhh, are we going to act like A Few Good Men doesn’t exist?
Some Good Men scene was great too ❤❤❤
When she heard perm, she became Newton
Blondes can practice Law!
The way you can see her confidence spike up and she goes bright as a light the moment she heard "perm" is such an amazing sight to witness!
Reese Witherspoon was perfect for this role. She embodied Elle Woods so perfectly, the acting, the portraying, and the channelling of the script from paper to real life is top notch!
This is always one of my favorite parts of this movie. Reese Witherspoon Vs. Linda Cardellini.
Compliment your opponent and then take her to the cleaners.😂😂😂 Elle is sassy af.
Dang. Velma was shook. Glad Elle was able to exonerate Nikki/Tracy and become friends with Liz.
Nice… scooby doo and heroes references. I see you are a person of culture as well…
i love the way she went from meek to confident as soon as she heard "Perm"
Anyone who's had a perm knows the rules.
Ong i woulda just stayed calm and said “shower cap” and thats how you fix that
Nah, she said she was washing her hair, so it wouldn't have worked.
Only Chutney had been trapped in Elle's hesitation and was bored...her guard down and tripped herself by saying 'yes (like bored) in the shower WASHING MY HAIR'. BOOM! That's where Elle's brain woke up! She totally ensnared Chutney.
She could have said, " I was taking a bath. "
She already said “she was washing her hair”
@tatianalyulkin410but taking a bath not loud as an taking a shower
Such an iconic scene!! I've watched Legally Blonde so many times that now I know some of the iconic lines!! Great film!! Reese Witherspoon was so good in this one!!
The best part about this is that Elle, despite the fact she kept confirming that the girl was in the shower over and over again, came back to bite immediately she mentioned a perm. Too bad she can’t change her alibi now 😅
Ikr. The fact that chutney went into the shower and she kept repeating it, she could not get out if it
Not mentioning that she was washing her hair.
Smart to lay the ground work that shes had multiple perms in the past.
@2:44, the "just wait for it" smile / laugh
I would loooooove to see the bloopers from this scene lol! Reese Witherspoon is iconic in this role!
Not only did she admit that she went home and immediately did the one thing you're not supposed to do after getting a perm, but even claimed she washed her hair, meaning she's washing the chemicals out and making the act of getting a perm completely pointless.
this scene never fails to give me goosebumps
3:50 she nailed it
Still rewatching this every time I can
been rewatching this clip many times
Watched this very scene almost 100 times :’) never gets old:’)
This one definitely make me want to watch this movie, AGAIN😢❤
This is a great example of a feminism movie done right. Elle gained her confidence and accomplishments all the while accepted help from Emmett. Men and women were portrayed as equals.
I lovw how the girl's smirk faded
Elle in pink, serving justice and looks-legendary. 💅⚖
How can anybody not love this movie!! … Especially this scene… I love it when that girl takes the gum out of her mouth and raises her hand!! . I am totally hysterical writing this.😂😂
The Chihuahua deserved an Academy Award.
This was one of my favourite scenes from the movie
this scene always giving me goosebump. She nailed it!
Excellent portrayal. Well done Lady
2:54 "You do the math" aand she did at 3:44
My favorite scene of the entire movie!
And there's a deleted scene where Chutney's mother, Mrs. Windham Vandermark tries to hire Elle to be Chutney's lawyer after she put her in jail.
one of the best scenes in the history of movies
I like the dog that peeked out of the pink bag.
3:42 divine
An open confession in your first trial is awesomely insane
Dear Elle Woods,
You may be fictional, but you will always hold a real place in my heart. During one of the most painful and difficult periods of my life, you kept my hope alive. Your strength, confidence, and glitter-powered resilience inspired me to believe in myself when I couldn’t see the light.
Because of that spark you gave me, I made it through.
I graduated with a Second Class LLB from the University of London.
Forever grateful to you, pink girl ❣️✨
This performance is amazing I will come back to watch it again.
perfectly straightened and bouncy hair of reese witherspoon
Do not underestimate the power of Elle Woods!
I love the fact that he believes in her fully and doesn't get impatient regardless ❤
Love Emmet’s look at 4:21-4:22 he looked so proud
The production quality is top notch This deserves recognition.
I once played chutney in legally blonde 😂
This is such a 90s scene 😂
I m trying to remember how many times i saw this scene and enjoyed it , can't. Too many times 🤩
Still one of my fave movies! Gosh Elle Woods
4:18 I didn't mean to shoot him I THOUGHT WAS YOU WALKING THROUGH THE DOOR!!!
4:18 she didn't mean to her father SHE THOUGHT WAS BROOKE WALKING THROUGH THE DOOR!!!!
Cant believe im the First comment on this legendary clip of the Trial of the Century
"I have a point, I promise".... "Then make it.." I will, and very soon, and it will have devastating consequences for Chutney.....
Only she could play this perfectly
