I crocheted as a teen but 60 years later saw an Afghan kit club in cream color that had gorgeous texture and a myriad of stitches. I wanted to relearn crochet and took the course. I had to relearn everything, from how to hold the hook to to controlling the tension, etc. Plus, the stitches in the project were extremely complicated. In the beginning, I had to tear out my work over and over, watch videos over and over and I was continuously starting over. It didn't bother me at all. I was there to learn and every mistake that was corrected was an (aha!) win. I am almost finished with it and cherish every minute of the experience. I learned SO MUCH! I am starting the Cosmos course and look forward to having another great learning adventure!
finally got rid of the old ones (actually wrote "paper" on them with a sharpie and put in the kitchen junk drawer. Love my Kai and Karen Kay Buckley scissors (and a couple OESD ones) and retired the rest
So, I have a beautiful package of wool, adornments and Valdani thread, unopened, staring at me daily! I truly intend to begin but am intimidated by the many different stitches needed to complete the project. I'm starting with the most basic stitch and will go on from there. If you are out and about and think you hear cries of frustration in the air, it's only me on my 1900th try to learn a french knot! Thanks for these tips, Sara, it's always fun to begin the New Year in the sewing space!
Your classes are fantastic. I buy my needles by the 100 (in a small box) and change them often. I use an old prescription bottle to put the old ones in. I consider these as "sharps" and don't want someone hurt by loose needles in the trash.
Have you seen the new course for the ribbon attachment? You can check it out here: stitching-with-sew-a-lot.teachable.com/courses/embellished-embroideries-with-husqvarna-viking-pfaff?affcode=1461490_shxr16vi
I puchased the Embroidery Essentials last year and didn't finish it. My goal this year is to start the course from the beginning and really learn how to use my embroidery module.
I take my fabric, that is still quite nice but I know I won't use, and make lap and throw size quilts for centers that can use them for their people. I quilt them with straight line or stitch in the ditch. I let the fabric show for itself. Some of the centers add ties to be knotted with prayer.
As for taking our sewing machines in for service, prevention here is the key. One always reads how machines were fine, taken in for service and came home with issues. Myself included Unfortuneatley I have experienced this. If it ain't broke, don't fix, but that does not say neglect your machine. After every day of sewing, clean out your machine. Oil as per instructions in the manual, some machines never get oiled, some need to be oiled every day. CHANGE your needle after every 8 hours of sewing or after every project. Use the appropriate needle for the project. Most definetely take in your machine at the sign of the first issue.
Only 3 big scissors, but many small ones (maybe 7...). Thank you for all you do. I actually learned to work on a new Bernina machine during the pandemic thanks to you, Sarah. I took the Cosmos course too, but didn't quite finish it. Need to do again, and some embroidery courses too.
Too many LOL. I have a lot of scissors but there are many kinds. Large Shears, applique, tiny curved blades, thread snip. blunt tip, pinking, and sew on. I need some at my machine and at my cutting table. I also have 60mm, 45 mm, 28 mm, and 18mm rotary cutters. I just subscribed and liked your channel. I am not going to admit to stuff I haven't used last year. HaHa I can assure you that as soon as I donate an item, in a week or so, I will figure out a use for it.
I don’t think I’m addicted to scissors. I have a pair of snips that never worked and MSQC credited my account for them; but I didn’t throw them away. I have two other pairs of snips-they came two in a package-and I use one pair and I’m saving the other pair for when the first pair quits working. I have a really nice black lightweight 8-inch pair of scissors; and somewhere I still have that heavy Gingher’s. For handwork I have a small pair of expensive scissors in my sewing bag. That’s about it, and looking at some of these entries, I don’t think that’s too bad. 😍
I big size scissors , 2 small ones that I have in 2 locations, 2 specialty for fringing and appliqué, 1 pinking shears. 2 rotary cutters, big and small
Alphabeties I have them in the package in the drawer. I think if I get them out, get them to where I can see them I would use them so that so I will do that.
Are we counting only crafting scissors? Because I'm also a homeschool mom to multiple children and host multiple kid activities. Sooooooo in my sewing room that I use for sewing i have one pair for fabric, two for paper, two snips and 1 rotary cutter. My son has a pair of snips, a fabric scissor and a paper scissor. I havea container that has 5 scissor for the activities I host, I have my kitchen scissor. Then I have two pair in the dining room buffet for any body for any use and a pair in my bathroom for trimming my own hair. And bith my boys have a pair for school things and I have one extra set that stays on the desk for me to have easy access to scissor when helping my younger kiddo. Is that too many??? Because it doesn't usually feel like enough.
Quilting rulers shrink???? I've never heard that one and did a quick Google search...not finding that. Insight on source for that comment would be appreciated.
I bought a couple of yo-yo makers that I haven’t opened. I think it’s because I’ve never used one and I don’t know how to use them. I saw a project in a store and it was an impulse buy. I do want to do something with them, I just haven’t yet.
Yes! And, we actually recently refilmed the Embroidery Essentials course on a Bernina for our Bernina owners...click here to learn more and even watch a few lesson videos for free in the class curriculum area: sewing-mastery.teachable.com/p/embroidery-essentials
The quilt is from the book "Tis the Season: Quilts and Other Comforts" by Shelley Wicks and Jeanne Large Click here to buy on Amazon ➡️: amzn.to/49TcFNK
My mom was a sewer and I inherited all her scissors 25 years ago, but have also bought many pairs for myself. Needless to say, I definitely need to donate some because I’m sure the number is higher than I care to admit. My goal for 2025 is to start/finish as many classes of yours that I can, it’s just so hard to find time when working full time. I can’t wait to retire and learn as much as I can. Thanks for all that you do, I couldn’t use my new Epic 2 without you!
Oh no! I’m behind. One 6-7”, one snips , 2 40mm and 2 smaller rotary cutter. No wonder I can never find them when I need them. Now I just need to find that gift card…
Epic 1 Haven't used it yet. I upgraded from Designer I. I have a quilt I need to try using a embroidery pattern to quilt. I have Platinum software. It seems so complicated.

I just subscribed today. Thank you for sharing all of the fantastic tips and tricks with us all. I greatly appreciate this channel. 😊
I have had the felting embroidery set for a couple of years and never used it. 2025 will be its year!
Happy New Year Sara🎉 Thanks for cheerily sharing your expertise😁
Asking how many scissors a quilter has is rather like asking 'How big is your fabric stash?" Hahaha :)
Oh, the joys of quilting!
finally got rid of the old ones (actually wrote "paper" on them with a sharpie and put in the kitchen junk drawer. Love my Kai and Karen Kay Buckley scissors (and a couple OESD ones) and retired the rest

I hope you'll love the Essentials course!

You can do it!

I have 10 prs scissors

Maybe the rotary cutter shaves tiny bits off over time???
yes, you are correct
a rotary cutter will shave off a little of the edge over time making it smaller

the yo-yo makers are so satisfying! try them out sometime!
