    The drums of this album was recorded in a huge concert hall called "Grieghallen" in Bergen, Norway. I've been inside of that concert hall and it makes sense how the drums feels so massive on this album

    Mayhem was basically on the forefront of the second wave of black metal in the late 80's and early 90's.
    This album and the band around that time has quite a bit of history to it.
    I don't listen to this album all that often any more, but I do return to it every once in a while and still enjoy it when I do.
    As far as the vocals go:
    I actually never heard the demo with the original (deceased) singer, but I know that quite a few people don't enjoy Attila's vocals and it honestly took a bit of time for me to get used to them as well. I have heard Attila on other projects as well (eg. Sunn O))) which is Drone Doom) and while he does have an admittedly strange vocal style, it usually strangely fits imo. I honesty think he made quite a few improvements to his vocals even though it is still the same weird style. I do think it sounds more controlled nowadays (although I haven't heard a lot of newer Mayhem though, only other projects).
    Jan Axel Blomberg aka Hellhammer is a fantastic drummer and probably still one of my favourite metal drummers. He played in a large amount of different projects over the years and not only black metal either but some avant-garde metal with black metal influences and neoclassical progressive metal as well. I haven't heard a good chunk of them, but I enjoyed the ones I have listened to quite a bit.

    This band helped inspire a lot of the Norwegian black metal scene in the late 80's and early 90's. They were musically inspired by earlier bands, like Venom, Bathory, and Hellhammer, and built a circle of like-minded individuals, who found themselves the center of numerous controversies and crimes, as well as a lot of black metal music. There are numerous documentaries about it all and even a movie was made about the events surrounding this band, called Lords of Chaos.

    cyclical repeating tremolo guitar melodies do seem to be a common thing in black metal, i guess it is very moody atmospheric genre, beginning of aggaloch's "into the painted grey" or something like main melody of emperor's "i am the black wizards" comes to mind

    • @MaaZeus
      @MaaZeus 3 года назад +4

      Yes. It is not usually very technically proficient genre but it does ooze atmosphere and that is what makes it tick. It after all was born as a counter reaction against Death Metal, which was becoming more and more polished and comercial back then, by a small group of rebellious teenagers who wanted to make as cold, sinister, raw sounding and unpolished music as possible. Nowadays the situation is a bit different but this is where Mayhem and the rest of the norwegian Black Metal scene got started and laid the groundwork for what kind of music it is.

    Folks don't GET that under the swampy necrotic and dissonant, ringing or warp-sawwing guitar is a NEOCLASSICAL and NEOROMANTIC compositional structure, with elements of archaic European folk music: The threnodic strains of the Slavonic strings, braying barkhorn or Alpine sackbut, dirgy chants from Hungary, Moldova or Greece, or wisent-hide tympane... It SOUNDS like Scythia invading or something during the Dark Ages, and this plodding march of doom shadowing their sacrificial offerings among the choice prisoners devoted to the Gods of The Steppes, with a final spasm of terror as the desperate chumps try rushing the guards and making a wild break for it... kinda like Malmedy.

    As others have noted, Mayhem were one of the key bands of the 2nd Wave of Norwegian Black Metal. All of these bands took the template laid down by Bathory in the mid-late 80s and ran with it. When I've said before that black metal is metal's version of punk--raw, unpolished, fast, unrelenting, aggressive, etc.--you can really hear that here. Personally, I'm not a big fan of any of the "pure" black metal bands (Bathory is an exception), and really don't care much for the genre unless it's mixed with progressive or symphonic elements ala Emperor/Ihsahn or bands like Weakling or Deathspell Omega. I can also dig "black n' roll" bands, which are bands that mixed black metal with a more classic rock sound (influenced by Motorhead), like later Immortal and I. I will say that I think Freezing Moon is one of the better "classic" black metal songs out there with some good riffs, and I do appreciate it how it builds up to its first verse, but it kinda loses me after that.

      I wonder how much of me is spoiled by what these originators inspired. In the Discord we were talking about Matrix and I wondered if it still held up to fresh eyes since the narrative and technological film making aspects aren't mind blowing anymore, they're just par for the course. I'm definitely in the "fresh ears" category when it comes to these highly influential and genre defining bands. There has been quite a few of these bands that "changed metal" but since I've heard their contributions done in highly refined ways and often mixed with other genres or ideas their pure, sometimes rough around the edges ideas simply don't resonate that much with me.

    I never got Mayhem. I just can't like them no matter how much I try. But yeah, Hellhammer is a great drummer, he's all that keeps me interested. The backstory of this band is amazing though, definitely worth looking into.

      I can recommend two albums from Mayhem that are for me considered masterpieces: Ordo ad Chao and Esoteric Warfare.
      I would also recommend listening to Ordo first which will make you appreciate Esoteric even more.

    attila is hungarian teenager in '92-'93 and that time in (post-communist) hungary a very few average people speak english well(or at all). thats why the articulation is "poor". personally i really dig it. and in the beginning of the '90s metal bands doesnt go to vocal couch...wtf 😂😂😂

      Im SO SO SO SOOO HAPPY that vocalists did not (often, esp in extreme metal music scenes) go to vocal coaches back in the day. Learn it yourself, that's what I believe in. It can be easily learned by sound, and dedication, but it may take years of course depending on what all styles and such you're trying to learn in relation to "harsh vocals"

    So I've been watching some of your video's, starting out with the older vids. Mostly the black/death metal tracks. The progression you make as a metal listener is very cool to witness. Some older vids I see a man who is overwhelmed by this shit music, and doesn't really like what he hears, with this video I really see this nasty look on your face, it's the ultimate facial expression of enjoyment in metal. Cool video's! You're a likeable man.
    Do more 90's death/black metal, it was the best period for extreme metal, everything before was still too weak, everything after the 2000's is overproduced and fake. OK this is a very broad generalization, but nonetheless true.

      This Mayhem drummer is great by the way, he also plays in Arcturus, which you'll like a lot more probably. The singer you liked in Winter Trice by Borknagar sung in Arcturus before!

      Thanks! It's certainly been a journey. I've been on a similar one though post-rock/metal as well. I did dive into Archspire's new album "Bleed the Future" and was blown away at the raw technical aspect of it. It's Tech Death rather than pure Death but I'd highly recommend it.

    • @fouter81
      @fouter81 2 года назад

      @@CriticalReactions I'm familiar with Archspire's previous works, but lost interest somehow... It's a good example of why I don't really like this modern stuff. So much hyperspeed technical wizard stuff, all the studiotrickery you need to make everything audible, makes it sound fake to me. I know they have a drummer, but when I listen to their album it sounds like a drumcomputer to me. I'm getting old maybe...

    • @CriticalReactions
      @CriticalReactions  2 года назад +1

      While I don't share it, I can appreciate this take. For me, the fact that it sound like a computer but I know it's a human is what keeps me around. There's just so much raw technical talent on display with them. It's not music that I'll probably ever listen to again. But I'm glad I checked it out once.
