  • Andy Crow and friends build a night-vision rifle scope out of parts they find lying around on eBay. He has a rat problem in one of the barns on his farm. Happily, he has a rifle. Will his homemade DIY NV set-up be up to the job?

    Why shoot rats?
    There are thought to be more than 10 million rats in the UK (…yuk).
    Rats carry many diseases which can spread to humans, normally through their urine, including: leptospirosis or Weil's disease, salmonella, listeria, toxoplasma gondii and hantavirus.
    Rodent contamination also presents a significant risk to livestock health. Both cattle and sheep will ingest a large proportion of faecal contamination (Daniels & Hutchings 2001).
    Rats can also inflict structural damage. They can cause fires by gnawing away the insulation around electrical cables, floods by puncturing pipes and they chew through gas pipes. The insurance sector has estimated that rodent damage to wiring is responsible for 25% of all electrical fires in buildings.
    Finally, rats can ruin an organisation's reputation. If clients and customers spot evidence of rodent infestation in the premises you manage, they are unlikely to want to do business with you.

    It's funny reading the comments about getting a cat. I had a HUGE cat, and this thing was so vicious it would tackle and maul large dogs. Even this brutal animal had a hard time of large rats, and was frequently getting bitten and hurt by them (on his paws). Not to mention, any time he killed something too big for him to eat, or a rat that tasted funny, he would leave their organs strewn all over the floor. It once took me 10 minutes just to find all the parts of a rat he caught. It is much cleaner, faster and humane to shoot them. Mice are a different story however.

      I got 1 cat, she gave babies and then thing continues. Now I've got 18 cats and No mice.. But to feed 18 cats, 3 times a day.. GOD!!

      You know o.o rats actually make amazing pets. They can learn tricks and they have complex social groups. OoO You know rats live in family groups and packs and they have been proven to show empathy for their group mates. If a rat is in trouble another tries to come and help it. o.o I honestly love rats but in the wild they can carry diseases but if you actually catch them alive you can turn them into pets haha if you really wanted too.
      However if you really do have a big rat problem get some cats. o.o My house used to be a home for wild rats until we got my four cats. Now I only have three cats ( Due to the death of one of my babies ) But alas the other three hunt down the rats by instinct. Mice too. I understand that rat's can cause lots of damage and they can in effect be deemed a pest but they really are beautiful creatures o.o With lots of emotions o.o and social structures that are amazing to witness. They all sleep together play together If they didn't breed faster than bunnies then they wouldn't really be a pest but then again o.o if they didn't breed so quickly then they probably would have gone extinct from all the hate they get XD
      I doubt I could kill a rat ever in my lifetime no matter how pesky but I don't blame those that do. After all rats can chew through concrete. So yeah they can do a lot of damage. Although they are surprisingly clean animals. Despite pooping a lot and peeing a little they groom themselves every single day sometimes three times a day and it's part of their social groupings too. ( I have owned rats o.o and spent every day with them they are so sweet and loving and cute. And honey was my most wild rat. With little to no human contact but she came around after a while of trust training and now she sees me as one of the pack XD It's very sweet ) Naturally I love rats but I also say o..o if you need to defend the crops do so XD and shooting is far more humane than the traps and the poison. >o> Poison doesn't even work that well because rats are so smart if they see one of their members dying from something it ate that rat learns what to avoid. o.o
      But no really cat's do an amazing job and they as well are a humane way of taking care of a problem o.o In my opinion that's nature.

      rats are disgusting rodents and ain't lovable creatures, these people who befriend the rats have no human friends and has lost their way. i had a friend who had a pet rat and would carry it on his shoulder the worst part was he had crater acne and the rat would nibble on it, omg thinking about it again makes me sick.

    Yeah. Rats suck. They found a way into my garage and into my tractor... found in cabin a lot of shredded foam/sound isolation and rat shit (smells horrible). They messed up tractor's electronics. One got stuck cabin's frame pipes and f*cking died. I'll have to remove the roof just to get it out.. I'm officially a rat hater now...

    Are the unlicensed rifles powerful enough to kill rats or do I need to go all out?

    • @fieldsportstv
      @fieldsportstv  8 лет назад

      +Baerchenization Yes sub 12 ft/lb is fine. / Charlie

      Ah cheers. I was talking about this with a German friend the other day and he mentioned that in Britain, air guns legally have, or can have, a lot more power than in Germany... so I was wondering where the 12 ftlb fall in to. I just looked this up and it seems with that, the British limit is more than twice the German limit. But I guess still not enough to send a rabbit to heaven?

    • @xibidit
      @xibidit 7 лет назад +1

      buy a hatsan and change the restriction valve for 10 euro and you have 50 ftlb inoffically ofcourse. not that i have done this but i have friends that have. :)

      In the US I don't know if there is a power limit. The air rifle I have can do 40 foot pounds energy that can take down large racoons

      I live in the state of NJ....a gun permit is required for anything that "launches" a projectile. so even a slingshot requires a permit....don't ever believe america is free. it's a really nice smoke and mirrors trick

      An airgun silencer is NOT an NFA item and doesn't require any payment (other than the actual purchase cost)... Actual firearm silencers are another matter...
