    Hope you enjoy the new series. Here is a quick reference for the questions which were answered in this episode. Enjoy!
    1:30 - Cade Boggess - What is usually the priority when it comes to placements? Is there an order of importance when it comes to rarity, production, and flexibility?
    4:06 - Shiva Kumar Shicashankar - In competitive catan environment with people conversing live or via voice chat, would you agree that dev card/army game is better than a road game since it is somewhat easier for the to team up and conspire against you to break your road, reduce your max road length, or give someone else the longest road?
    5:30 - Shiva - Dandy - thank you for giving us awesome and consistent catan content. Looks like you are inspiring Dylighted to post more too. If yoi are placing first, what are the situations that you will not take a 569 (assuming it gives you at least two distinct resources)?
    7:30 - Christopher Cuomo - Do you play any of the other expansions (seafarers, cities and knights, etc)? If so, which one is your favorite and why? Do you believe the base game is the best and most strategic version, or do you prefer one of the expansions?
    9:40 - Shiva - Can you do a video on hand tracking tips? How to get better at it step by step?
    11:53 - Julian Taffa - How does your strategy change if you know you're playing against much weaker players? I often find they are much harder to predict placements for, and much less willing to trade in general
    14:08 - Ipwnwithmatrix - I'd love to see some sort of mini guide on 1v1 placements, I'm stuck in diamond and think my placement strategy is a big factor in my losses
    15:47 - Eric Schill - It seems like there are four main strategies in catan: balanced setup, relying heavily on ports, road building/ expansion, OWS (obvious a mix of four is common. Which strategy have you found to be most reliable and consistent? Which one is the most underrated? Of course, every board is different, just wanted to hear your thoughts. Love the videos.
    17:31 - Eric Schill - What percentage of the game is strategy vs luck? My friends always say I get lucky but I think they are just jealous of my success in catan lol
    18:56 - Kyle Hsu - Thanks Drew, I think your mental positivity in the game is what "drew" me to your channel :) did you always have that mindset even when you started?
    20:41 - Zakolache - How does the desert spot in a game change your thought process, especially during the initial placements? ie. center vs edge vs 2nd ring desert
    22:32 - Goz Z - How do you evaluate players threat levels as there are strong late game and early game positions plus there's also player flexibility from ports to consider. Would just like to hear some examples of who do you think is stronger on a board even when there's a point gap
    25:06 - baller34725 - What's the best strategy to win games when other players are making mistakes that are out of your control? Like trading others too loosely or tunneling on you with blocks/robs and allowing another player to get ahead

    Question: How come when Dylan gets an early VP he’s frustrated, but when you get an early VP you say “That’s so good!”

    • @michael-solomon
      @michael-solomon Год назад +1

      Haha, it depends on what game you're going for. If you are shooting for longest road long term, it's good because it's hard to earn the last 3 points as a longest road player. You often get 5 settles + longest road for 7 but getting the last 3 points requires you to city twice. So pulling a VP is very good because now you don't have to build two cities which is often difficult if you have little or no ore. For OWS players it's much worse to get an early VP, because you really need knights to defend your hexes and secure largest army. Dylon plays OWS all the time whereas Drew goes for more creative set ups so it's more often Dylan gets a useless VP.

    • @hritabanroy6911
      @hritabanroy6911 Год назад +5

      think it is because of ease. "grain" and "lumber" are both words used generally less often than "wheat" and "wood". this is also why some people call "ore" -> "rock". which still is a bit of a divide to this day. probably the determining factor for most people was that ore makes more sense, since obtaining rocks from mountains being a precious resource is weird. also, single syllable words are just easier to say in table talk.

    I think its hard to argue catan is 80% skill if the top pros are pushing 50% win rate. Like in my eyes if it really was 80%, you would be near an 80% win rate. Tough to say tho, skill is what gives you the most chance to win tho for sure.

    • @dandydrew
      @dandydrew  Год назад +1

      You have to assess catan’s skill and luck from the perspective of the long-term. In a given game, the dice variance can certainly imbalance in unfavorable ways. The aspect of skill comes in when you look at the many games over time and how good decision-making stacks. I feel incredibly confident I can take any account into the top 10 within 100 games - I have ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY on this. Why? Because I know my skill in the long-run will pay off. If you can take any account into the top 10 consistently, then the game MUST be skill-driven by a large margin. Otherwise, the race for the top of the board would be a lot more unpredictable and inconsistent.
      The real challenge for a player is to know when you were lucky (or unlucky) and/or when you are playing skillfully. If you can learn to distinguish those aspects, then you will be able to critically evaluate your game and work on your weaknesses to improve.

    • @brycepowell6639
      @brycepowell6639 Год назад

      @@dandydrew I agree you can do that but I disagree with the assessment to some extent.
      Chess is one game almost everyone agrees is 100% skill. You either win or lose base off of your decisions. If an chess grandmaster player plays someone who is expert level. The grandmaster will win 99% of the time.
      If an extreme pro player in Catan like you played against 3 experts but not pros, maybe 40% win rate. Sure you would win a lot in the long-term. But it would be still really solid if you had a 50% win rate. But you could be leagues better than the rest of the table but still lose half the time.
      All we do as experienced Catan players is make the plays that generate us the most EV in terms of wins. Yes overtime the best players will end up top, you see this in poker as well. If you play 1000's of hands in heads-up poker one player will end up on top.
      Catan is 100% skill in the fact that if you make bad decisions you will lose. And if you make good ones, and your opponents make good ones, you can get up to a 50% win rate. To me, a game where 50% of the time winning does not correlate with a game that's 80% skill.
      The game is 100% skill based on who reaches the top, that goes for any game (with decisions that can be made) ever. When assessing a chance to a particular game, it will always be determined by, the board, your opponents, and dice rolls. All of these factors will impact the chance you win.
      I guess if you really want to say it like the way you are putting it, Catan is a 100% skill game because every decision you make either increases or decreases your chance of winning.
      Like what does your 20% luck chance really mean at the heart?

    • @444Kobe444
      @444Kobe444 Год назад

      @@brycepowell6639 have you factored in the fact that you’re comparing a game where you only play against one opponent with a game where you’re playing against three opponents at once. Obviously your win rate will be much lower when 4 people can win instead of only 2. 80% skill equalling a win rate in the 40s% feels about right

    80% skill and 20% luck doesn't sound very accurate to me. it's definetely more luck than that. Not much in dice but mostly in the devs you draw. had you drawn 3 knights instead of 2 vps and the mono this game for example, you would have not won. It is in fact well known that 3 vps will most often result in a win. I don't have statistical data on this but I will keep tracking of my own games to see if I can confirm it.
