Rebuilding C-6 transmissions 43 years , I've watched other u tube guys in the past few days sowing "how to do" but! You just got the job done straight to the point where others went way overboard and got ridiculous , thanks for just showing " how to " and good job 👍
at 1:27:24 you crumpled up the gasket and thru it away..On my rebuild, I used that gasket and nearly blew up my transmission..I am as serious as a heart attack..I had 400 pounds of line pressure!!..My trans came out of a 72 T-bird..And I guess it never had a gasket or it had a different one than the trans-tec gasket that you crumpled up.. I must have disassembled that VB at least 7 times trying to figure why It was so high.. Then I remembered your video..And I said to my self..try it without the gasket and that was it!!! THANK YOU>>>THANK YOU>>>THANK YOU.. I was ready to pull the trans back out thinking I had done something wrong on the build 3 days pulling my hair out..Looking at service manuals at 3 o'clock in the morning because I couldn't sleep A gasket..I crumpled it up and slammed it with a BFH about 7 times equaling the amount of times that I tore the VB open again looking for anything.. 90 pounds at idle..Thank You!!
Thanks. Don't remember who taught it to me, I think it was a guy I knew named Victor about 35 years ago. So he deserves the credit. Thanks for watching.
I've never heard about this trick but I've had the same cross bar spring compression for 43 years ,but I think I'm going to try it on my next c- 6 just for fun 😁
My C6 has no lock ring on the output shaft. Bought the truck in 79. 1972 F250 Camper Special 390 C6 2 Wheel Drive. Was rebuilt by someone long time ago. Should it have had one on it?
I assume you are talking about the one that holds the rear planet ring gear on. Yes it should be there. Keeps the output shaft from floating rearward. Unless it has the bolt on yoke.
Hello I finally took the c6 governor out and don’t see any obvious signs of valve being stack (still resolving no 3rd) old mechanic trick is to place check ball inside spring of the smaller valve inside governor to help rattle it in case stack etc wondering if that’s something you would do before assembly back ? 🙏🙏🙏
You can, it's not something I do on every rebuild. It helps keep the valve from sticking. If you have good reverse your problem is going to be governor, valve body or vaccuum.
@@CurmudgeonTransmission awesome I seen this trick once in a while just needed to ask before I put it back together I guess i don’t see how it could cause problems
The way to modify the Ford c6 is going to thrust bearings (roller rising it) and putting in an e4od or 4r100 6 pinion planetary gear set in it which will widen the 1st and 2nd gear ratio in the Ford C6
Does the outer front pump gear really mater, I watched 5 videos on just that and each one installed with the mark up and down so I guess it really don't mater?
Yes, That model has the bolt on yoke like this one. Same truck my dad traded his 69 Mach 1 428 Cobra Jet in on. Saddest day of my life. His was red & white with no a/c.
The yellow or gold, is no longer available. Red, blue and green still is. Red thinnest, green thickest. Transgel or Dr. Tranny are the brands. Kit depends on what you want in it and who you get it from. Kits available from just paper and rubber all the way to including steels. WIT and Transtar links are in the description. Just tell them what you want.,
No. I have not found it to be a problem. If you are building it to race then I might. Otherwise use a good quality clutch and it should not be a problem.
There are a few that do that but this transmission it is too thin. It is really more of a wavy steel than a cushion plate that they do it with. but it acts as a cushion.
Watch a little closer, they were half turns. I don't always go with what the book says to do anyway. I use it as a general rule., but I set all my bands by feel. Some I always set tighter than what it calls for.
@@CurmudgeonTransmission wonder if a video on the best transmission to the worst transmissions would be popular? in your opinion of course... since your the only RUclipsr who does all transmissions and not just a few..
@@markvietti Maybe. Be hard to determine which is which, kinda subjective. Some of the ones I see the most are partly due to the numbers of them on the road. @@CurmudgeonTransmission thanks for the thanks 👍 !
Agreed 👍
This is the exact transmission I am rebuilding for my 1969 F100, thanks for the video. It was very helpful for a first timer like me.
Very welcome, thanks for watching.
Thank you soooooooo much for this video, helped rebuild my FIRST C6 ever!!
Glad it helped. Thanks for watching.

Nice tip on the rear snap ring tried it n works great with the th400 cover!

The extra part in the governor spring is to keep that valve from sticking you can use a check ball too.
Great video. Gets right to it 👍👍👍👍
Thanks for watching.
Try installing the reverse clutch pack first , you will find its ez to get the hub in and not fight with the frictions
Yeah !!!!! The parts people are ignorant about early models and everything else

The Ford C6 was fords original heavy duty automatic transmission. It was also used in the Bigfoot monster truck.
It’s on par with the GM TH400 and the Mopar TF-727
The way to modify the Ford c6 is going to thrust bearings (roller rising it) and putting in an e4od or 4r100 6 pinion planetary gear set in it which will widen the 1st and 2nd gear ratio in the Ford C6

The outer gear really does not matter, although the mark if it has it, is suppossed to face the front.
You are working on a F-250 is the C-6 build you did the same for a 1970 F-100 390 motor?
Yes, That model has the bolt on yoke like this one. Same truck my dad traded his 69 Mach 1 428 Cobra Jet in on. Saddest day of my life. His was red & white with no a/c.
What kind of grease/lube are you using in the yellow container? I’m gonna rebuild my C6 soon
Also what’s the part number for the complete rebuild kit?
The yellow or gold, is no longer available. Red, blue and green still is. Red thinnest, green thickest. Transgel or Dr. Tranny are the brands. I notice that you do not soak your frictions in ATF prior to installation. Some say you should but is it really necessary?
No. I have not found it to be a problem. If you are building it to race then I might. Otherwise use a good quality clutch and it should not be a problem.
One more question if you would be so kind. IS there a rule of thumb for the clearances on the clutch packs? I notice you just do it by feel!
.008-.010 per friction is the general rule. Not true in all situations.
Hello. Can you put a friction next to a cushion plate vs. a steel?
There are a few that do that but this transmission it is too thin. It is really more of a wavy steel than a cushion plate that they do it with. but it acts as a cushion.
Looks like the band adjustment was only 3/4 of a turn. Looks like you made 3 quarter turns and called it good. I could be wrong.
Watch a little closer, they were half turns. I don't always go with what the book says to do anyway. I use it as a general rule., but I set all my bands by feel. Some I always set tighter than what it calls for.
You will find that if you refran from using thoes red rags you will not see lint in your pick up screen!
So far it seems similar to the 545 rebuild.
Whatcha' talking bout Willis?
@@CurmudgeonTransmission hahah guess not. This is all new to me so idk what I’m looking at
You're looking at a relic from the past, an ancient dinosaur. It's like bigfoot, very seldom seen.

wish to be able to take my C6 apart with such ease meanwhile trying to resolve not having 3rd gear engaging
You have good reverse? The 1-2 shift on time?
@@CurmudgeonTransmission yes perfect reverse and 1-2 super crisp just no 3rd gear I just replaced vacuum modulator too
Was the problem there before you replaced the modulator? Where did you get it and what color is it?
Yes the problem started before I replaced modulator the factory one didn’t have screw to adjust I replaced with green striped one
@@CurmudgeonTransmission I recently measured vacuum and gauge scale shows 18
oh clearances are off... pull out that dial indicator you never use..lol
Had a lot of trouble with that unit, one thing after another.
