I really love your story and I love how you put your videos together you’re down to earth but very informative and I just started canning and you are such an inspiration! Thank you💕❤️🙌
I dehydrated my chicken bones and crushed to turn into bone meal for the garden. Also diluted the blood from the chicken harvest with water and used on the garden in place of blood meal. Feathers buried deep in the compost pile. I have bags of frozen tomatoes that need processing too! ~Jennifer
Man you are doing the utmost in reusing on the homestead! I haven’t taken myself to that level yet. We composted the feathers and took the offal to the woods for the coyotes and other scavengers. I may have to incorporate some of those techniques in the future. Since costs of everything is going up this would be a good way to save on fertilizer. Thanks for sharing that info. It just shows you that there is always another layer to the homestead. Always something else to continue to make the circle ⭕️ stay closed and to use what you have.
I absolutely love your kitchen. Thank you for a great video I am did the challenge along with you ladies and I have preserved so much from my garden. I am actually doing more Salsa today. ❤❤❤
I wanted to get on here and say how much I enjoyed your video. It is my first time doing the challenge and I am only on Instagram so that’s where I am posting. I’ve dehydrated tomatoes a couple times, we love them as snacks so I’ve yet to have any for olive oil marinating! Such good work. Thank you💚👒
Girl I really can’t say enough about the freeze dryer. I knew I would use it. But I didn’t know I would “use it” like I do. I have not stopped running this machine since I got it. I am just shocked at how efficient it is and how easy it is to just throw stuff in and let the machine do the rest. Very little prep work required most of the time. I don’t know if would be keeping up as well as I am with harvesting and preserving this year without it. I know this sounds like a shameless plug for the freeze dryer but I truly am impressed with what it can do.

Hi Julie. I wonder if in the future you freeze dried those bones, would they become a powder you could sprinkle over your dogs food? I’m not fully certain how the freeze drier works and if that’s how they would turn out but if they would be a powder, it would be great nutrition.

I will link them. www.google.com/search?q=fig+cherry+ice+cream&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari#imgrc=329hY-Vj9QevaM And this one: theviewfromgreatisland.com/roasted-fig-gelato/ I will be honest though. I will be making roasted fig almond ice cream every year with my figs. ❤️

Hey Susie!! So glad you got inspired! Those cherry tomatoes are out of control around here. Sooooo many! My dehydrator and freeze dryer and canners have been going like crazy the past few weeks. They are being tested and worked to full capacity. But I am loving this challenge. I can’t wait to show y’all the end results. I’m going to try to put it all in one spot and video it! Thanks for sharing your preservation during the challenge. I love watching Jessica’s challenges every year and get excited when others participate. Two questions: do you have a video on your salsa? Looks delicious. Also, I really like those half gallon jars you are using for your freeze dried vegetables. May I ask where you buy them? I have been looking for jars of that size. Please keep videos coming.
Hi there! Thanks so much for watching and taking time to share your thoughts. I’m glad you’re here on the channel with us. I used this recipe for my salsa. www.theyummylife.com/recipes/180/Roasted+Salsa+for+Canning I hope that helps you out! ❤️
Thanks so much for taking time to watch our video about preservation. I think you have to see it from a different perspective. I don’t think homesteaders and peepers inherently have more money, they just choose to spend it on other things. For instance I have been saving for two years and skipping other things (like a vacation) to save the money for a freeze dryer because I think it’s an important tool for my family. It’s not because I am loaded with money. People choose to spend their money on what they deem to be the most important. And this is what we have decided matters to us. Our families mission is to eat well because it’s the key to your overall health. So I think it’s easy to pass judgment about what we think others lives are like without knowing the whole story. I do appreciate you watching and I hope this gives you another perspective.
It will be in the next installment of the video! Stay tuned! Thanks so much for watching. I appreciate you being here and taking time to share your thoughts.
Great job! I wish I could join this challenge. Alas, last year I canned about 3 days per week. This summer I am taking our 'house yard' and turning it into a food forest. So, tons of work. It started as a hilltop cut with nothing on it. We left it bare for years because of work and building our house. The house is about 80% done but with the current world events I feel it more important to get the garden infrastructure in first (my old garden area needs refurbishing and has some large trees that need to come down. We will plant it in winter squash next season).
This was a great video! I was wondering how long the dehydrated tomatoes in olive oil will stay good in the refrigerator. Lots of sweet cherry tomatoes I would like to put them up this way
I take the fat and put in a crock pot on low and let it melt down until it all liquid. Usually 4 hours or so. Then strain out any bits with a cheese cloth and store in a glass jar in the fridge or freezer. Then I just scoop out what I need for cooking.
Good tip! When I use my instant pot and pressure cook my bone broth I will give those bones to the dogs because they turn to mush. I just need to do that with the ones I do in the roaster as well. I just need to send the roasted ones back through the pressure cooker for an hour. Next time I will do that for sure. Thank you for sharing that with us. ❤️
I do the same.... Though I don't food process them.... If I can smash them withy fingers, they are good. When they are in the instant pot I add healthy parts, broccoli, etc. Dog food!
Wow, you got a lot done. Is that big pot you cooked the broth and tomatoes in a slow cooker? I'd love a freeze dryer but not sure they sell them in Ireland!
It’s a roaster pan with heating element but it’s not a slow cooker. It can reach pretty high temperatures compared to the slow cooker. It’s just such nice large capacity that it works well for big canning projects.
I usually dont keep more than 6 months. But usually I have used them up before then. Thanks so much for watching and taking time to comment and share your thoughts. I appreciate it! ❤️
I haven’t tried it yet but I plan to heat some filtered water and then add the he powdered broth into the water and reconstitute it into broth again. I can make it as concentrated or diluted as I want it to taste. I also plan to just add it in as a flavoring to other veggie, rice, and pasta dishes as well. I hope that helps answer your question. Thanks for watching! ❤️
Well done! I just replaced my grandmother’s old fig tree with two new ones. I was wondering how old your tree is? Mine are very small but already have figs!
Hi! Thanks so much for watching. I’m not sure how old the fig tree is. It was here when we bought our farm. We have been here 6 years so my guess would be about 10 years old at least. But I planted a couple new ones 2 years ago and they are already getting dogs and have gotten really big! Figs are so easy to grow. I have trouble with all the other fruits like peaches and apples. But figs just do their thing. ❤️❤️
I dont think I have any control over the brightness settings on your device. I don’t make any adjustments to lighting in my videos so I’m not sure if it’s something I can even change. So sorry you’re having trouble with viewing.
I really love your story and I love how you put your videos together you’re down to earth but very informative and I just started canning and you are such an inspiration! Thank you💕❤️🙌

Yes!!!! It feels so satisfying when you put those jars on the shelf! Good job! 👏 👏
I pressure cooked my bones and put them through a food processor and they are good for dogs
Great idea 😁. I will do that from now on!!!
Enjoyed this so much! For your roasted tomato salsa, do you have the recipe on your blog, or is it from a book?
How long do the small cherry tomatoes in olive oil last in the fridge?
Love your videos! This was a great one. ❤️
I usually dont keep more than 6 months. But usually I have used them up before then. Thanks so much for watching and taking time to comment and share your thoughts. I appreciate it! ❤️
I would love to know how you use your freeze dried bone broth.
Do you give onion to your dogs? Thats one thing to not give to dogs. Chocolate, grapes and onion is three big things that is bad for dogs.
Please change your video settings so that the brightness is not overridden. Your videos go to max brightness, hurts my eyes, and runs down battery
I dont think I have any control over the brightness settings on your device. I don’t make any adjustments to lighting in my videos so I’m not sure if it’s something I can even change. So sorry you’re having trouble with viewing.
