I would like to thank ping skills for being a big reason to improve my game with such wonderful tips, without any physical coach and just by drilling and practicing as per your tips I have improved my level a lot, those players who are quite advance compare to me are admiring my game and progress in made in last 1 year, in India we have a culture to give"Guru" (Teacher) a place of God, you both are my favorite Table tennis "Guru" and I need your blessing to grow further. Hi Jiecheng, I can't reply to your comment because RUclips won't let me (I think it may be your settings?). You can just keep your bat still if you get the right angle and they play it really fast. If you have time though it's good to play a short stroke like we show.
Jiecheng Zhang Yeah it could be? I've done a search on Google and they mention that some "Linked Comments" I won't be able to reply to but there's not much of an explanation?? It's strange because it only happens with a few different people who comment. On most I can reply just fine.
Jiecheng Zhang This time it let's me reply - I'm not sure why. We will upload the forehand block shortly! I also answered your question about keeping the bat still when blocking. You can do this if you don't have time. When you do have time you can play a short stroke like we show.
Hello. You are already a good teacher. I am confused with the following terms. What are the differences? counter hit and drive?, topspin drive and loop?, loop and loop drive?, stroke and drive? Please.
Great question. A lot of people use these terms interchangeably. I wouldn't worry too much about the terminology. Take a look at our answers to some of these questions for more information - www.pingskills.com/table-tennis-forum#gsc.tab=0&gsc.q=terminology%20drive%20counterhit%20loop&gsc.sort=
They like the speed generally so a good option is to vary the spin, speed, and placement of your topspins. alois and Jeff you have developed my game like anything . pls let me know how to block a fast and furious smash and how to return a fake shot . my practice mate does a topspin smash fake idk how he does it . thnx a lot pingskills
+Aditya Rao It's great to hear that you are improving. It's difficult to block a fast smash. The best solution is to stop them from smashing it in the first place. Try to keep the ball low and if possible short. Then maybe you can make the first attack :)
Hi guys. I have a question. If your block looks like a weak counterhit, does that mean you could say "I played a weak counterhit to block the ball" or would you rather say "I played a block, which is _not_ a counterhit but a weaker version of that stroke". Also, when you explained the backhand punch as being one way of doing a block, Jeff gave some examples of that at 3:30. However, to me this looked identical to a strong counterhit stroke. So is a punch the same as a strong counterhit or are there subtle differences? My current guess is that blocking is done either by counterhitting or keeping the bat entirely still, and that a weak counterhit is usually called a block, a regular counterhit is still a block but usually called counterhit/drive, and a strong counterhit is still a counterhit, regularly called a punch and is also a block. If I got any of those terms messed up please elaborate since I find this conglomeration of terminology to be quite confusing at times. Also, I assume "blocking" refers to catching the ball early instead of at the top of its bounce. If that's not true please correct me on that. This leads me to believe one of the few examples of counter strokes that are not blocks is a counter loop. Countering simply seems to refer to returning balls that already have a lot of power or topspin on it; again, please correct me if that's not accurate.
Hi Ralph, These strokes as you have noticed are all very similar. And it's not really important to have specific definitions. What is important is that you can play against different types of spins and strokes. Against a topspin I would normally say I blocked the ball, if someone topspins the ball then I would be more likely to call it a block than a counterhit. The punch is like a faster block, and again it's different from a counterhit in that you are playing it against a topspin ball.
With the block you aren't trying to generate a lot of your own spin. The short is more of a defensive way to return your opponent's attacking topspin. It certainly is possible to play an attacking stroke where you do generate lots of topspin but this is a much harder stroke to perform. Here's a video that explains the options you have: www.pingskills.com/tutorials/advanced-strokes/counter-spinny-topspin
@@pingskills Thanks for that - I know I've mastered it when I've got the control of koki Niwa :) I find it's also useful if you need to change position to play an attacking shot.
+PingSkills well i certainly did improve my backhand by a lot thanks to your videos, especially the backhand counterhit. thank you for nice instructions
What about blocking with a back spin instead of top spin or punching? I often do this but I'm really weak (lots of bad habits too) and so are my opponents, so maybe that's why I get away with it? At a higher level of play, is this too hard to perform, or does it give my opponent an opportunity to attack?
Hi Mihail Mihaylov, if you are using normal inverted rubber then it is very difficult to block with backspin. If you have long pimples or anti-spin then it's a bit easier. What type of rubber are you using?
PingSkills I'm using inverted rubber. What I do is almost a passive block, but I do a short fast vertical chop at the moment of contact. It seems to me that as a result the ball drops noticeably shorter than when I do just a passive block. But as I said, both me and my opponents don't play well at all, plus we use low end premade bats, so we are not generating lots of spin. I take it from your answer that with more skill this wouldn't make sense. Thank you.
Mihail Mihaylov Yeah that's right. As the rubber on your bat gets older and older the chop block will become easier and easier. However if you want to learn more about spin and play more like the professionals then it's good to get some decent rubber on your bat and replacing them when it wears out, which is roughly every 80 playing hours.
Hi Alois / Jeff I was watching a match between Ma long and Fan zendong ..and commentator used a term chop block and ball looped in air and I thought that will a easy shot for Fan but ball crashed in net, I was kind of confused about behaviour of ball. can you please explain what exactly that stroke / technique is , and is it good learn at intermediate level ?
The chop block is not really a recommended stroke as it's really hard to execute. It puts a lot of backspin on the ball which is maybe what caused Fan the problem. You don't see it very often it actual games at the highest level. They are more focused on attack.
Hi PingSkills (Alois and/or Jeff), When performing the block, I've noticed it's hard to get an accurate block in match play, where often my opponent topspins it so hard, whenever I do the littlest stroke, the ball goes out. So, sometimes I'll just place the bat in front of the ball. Should I still stroke the ball a little?
How to punch the ball when the return ball is backspin??? Also how to block in a good way off a backspin ball so that my return wont be too much height ??
