This movie originates from the real-life incident known as the "McFarland incident," which involved the discharge of formaldehyde by the U.S. military stationed in South Korea

There is a lot of geo-political satire in this movie. South Korea post war is under a lot of control of the US, both from military and political perspective. In a way, through a monster movie, it is showing how much the US is actually influencing Korean matters (first scene showed that the monster was probably created by the US person forcing to dump toxic waste into the Han river and the Korean guy without hesitation just following the order, thus creating the monster, when the US citizen got killed, the US created a false narative of a "Virus" and kept insisting on it, even though they knew it's a lie). It is showing the incompetencies of Korea against the "mighty" US, though in the end, it was those incompetent people who saved the day.

@@cinemamosaic The comments are correct in general.
And I read some reviews from Americans who felt offended when the movie was first released.
However, the movie is actually criticizing the helpless Korean government and Koreans
who obey sort of hegemonism or some kind of irrationalities.
it talks to people who justify grandiose powers in other words.
      not just criticizing the U.S.
The reason why the U.S. appeared in the movie is just because of the reality that
the U.S has the hegemony of the world in the name of Pax-Americana
You've never heard of the 'McFarland case' in which no one has been punished.
You've never heard that Korean courts cannot punish crimes committed by the U.S. military in Korea.
You've never heard that The U.S. military literally crushed two Korean school girls with a battle tank in 2002, but no one was punished.
You've never heard that the U.S. has Wartime Operational Control of whole Korean army.
And many things like these are still there under the protection of so many Koreans who praise the power or anything looks grandiose,
Then they want to be under the control of it which sometimes works irrationally.
This situation is completely Korean people's fault.
I don't blame any individual Americans because you can't know everything,
It's the same as many Koreans don't know about what Korean army did in Vietnam war.
I hope you understand that this movie is about KOREANS doing stupid things,
taking being controlled by the grandiose power for granted.
Despite being harmed by the power...
The man who jumped into the river at the beginning of the movie was talking to KOREANS, not to Americans
"Don't you see that? Why can't you get out of the darkness?"

I enjoyed your reaction to the movie.
The scene of the release of poison, which is the cause of the birth of the monster in the early movie, satirizes the "U.S. Forces Korea's Han River Poisoning Incident."
The part where Hyun-seo, played by Go Ah-sung, died is criticizing the "U.S. military armored vehicle crash (Miseon and Hyo-soon deaths)," in which two middle school girls were killed due to carelessness in a U.S. military vehicle.
And the scene of "Agent Yellow" sprayed on protesters is a recreation of "Agent Orange" from the Vietnam War.
The 'Korean U.S. Forces Korea Han River Poisoning Incident' occurred in 2000,
Albert McFarland is an anecdote about the deputy chief of the morgue of the U.S. Forces Korea and instructing a South Korean military officer to throw poison into the sewer.
It is an incident in which a considerable amount of poison was released toward the Han River just because dust accumulated in the bottle.
When the Korean State Council complained to the U.S. military command at the time, the U.S. military said, "If diluted with water, it is harmless to the human body."
It is said that he internally announced the conclusion that throwing it into the Han River is eventually diluted with water and there is no problem.
The contents of the incident are directly reflected in the first scene of "The Host."
The U.S. military character that seems to have been created with the motif of McFarland
The interesting details are the part that cites the internal conclusions of the U.S. military at the time.

This is a very dark black comedy at its best. It's an allegory of today's socio-political environment. The monster wasn't the only problem - it was the people and government that was even bigger problem.

the director is Bong Junho of the Parasite. the Host is his first box-office success movie here in Korea. the audience for this film is almost close to 11M.
※ the population of Korea is approximately 51M.
※ Korean box-office standard is the number of audience not for money.

@YT-nx3qk maybe you're not wrong but the number of audience for Memories of Murder is about 5.2M. just half of the Host's.
in general we Koreans hardly consider that some movie less than 10M audiences is successful or hit. 🫡

You need to know the background of the times. At that time, the United States was a country that helped Korea in the Korean War, and at the same time, it was a country that was acquitted even though it committed many crimes in Korea.
In 2000, the U.S. military in Korea discharged unpurified formaldehyde into the Han River, and in 2002, an accident occurred in which two middle school girls(age:14) were crushed to death by a U.S. military armored vehicle.
As the girls were walking to the edge of the narrow street, an armored vehicle passed by, leaving no trace of the girls' bodies.
At the time, the armored vehicle driver and tank commander were put on trial, but were acquitted. Even though the tank commander found the girls before the accident, he failed to respond properly.
From the Olympics to Anton Ono's foul, it was a time when anti-American sentiment was at its strongest.
That is why the United States was depicted as the axis of evil in the 2006 movie.

I did read that this was a reflection on 3 real life events, which I think people have mentioned in the comments. Just like Parasite I think there is a deeper message here. It is like satirizing classism maybe. The different members of the family seem to be representing maybe different groups of people. I can't really make the bigger connection but if you notice it seems that the young daughter was the smartest. It's probably a hopeful sign and the message could be save the kids, save the future. The brothers and sister all had different issues but also had talents, the grand-dad was very forgiving and heroic in his way. Most monsters in a monster movie represent something, some existential threat to a nation. This movie feels like a collision between technology and old ways and the common people are being pinched in the process of change. Maybe it could be something like that. The original Gojira monster for example represent the dangers of nuclear power.

Good video you uproad! Here are some informations.
    1. The incident in which US forces stationed in Korea illegally discharged waste into the Han River was a real incident.
    2. The film as a whole has a strong anti-American tone. In the early 2000s, three incidents occurred one after another: 1) the controversy over the biased judgment of the Salt Lake Winter Olympics 2) the crushing death of a middle school girl by a U.S. military armored vehicle 3) the unjustified invasion of Iraq
So anti-American sentiment arose in Korean society and this gets extreme. The movie reflects that social situation, and this anti-Americanism in Korean society rapidly changed to pro-Americanism as North Korea's nuclear threat became visible in the late 2000s.
    3. The movie overall shows a strong distrust of public power, because Korea was a colonial country and acted everything very quickly to join the ranks of advanced countries. In the process, many things were handled hastily, and this is a criticism of the social situation at that time.
ah,don't worry- Public power of Korea in nowdays can be trustful.

Many Americans don't seem to be aware of the misdeeds they have done. When you talk about America's misdeeds, they always say, "Why do you speak ill of America?" Historically, the United States has supported dictatorships, fought wars, created tragedies, and taken global hegemony, but many American citizens seem to be unaware of this, which is heartbreaking.
