- Here is vintage NHL game from the 1989-1990 regular season - St. Louis Blues @ Chicago Blackhawks in Chicago Stadium on Thursday, March 1, 1990. A late season battle for first place in the division. Featuring Blues announcers Ken Wilson and John Kelly on the call. Posted for archival and entertainment purposes only.
Interesting to hear John Kelly’s voice when he was young. He was only 29 when this was aired.
This was Alain Chevrier's last appearance for Chicago... he was playing himself out of the NHL after having taken them to the conference championship the previous year!
Chevrier would soon be sent to Pittsburgh and Greg Millen would replace him. Millen began the year in St Louis and Riendeau took his job... Curtis Joseph became his backup.

John Kelly says that eventually the relationship between him and Ken got frosty. Ken didn’t want to share play by play duties after Kelly had been told he’d be doing some play by play as well. Kelly says that one game, he refused to talk for an entire period when Kelly was doing play by play. When Kelly called management at a break to point this out and ask what they should do, management said “you boys have to get along.”
Riendeau was having a nice season at the start of this game. Those were good numbers for 1989-1990.
Just started watching this, but great hustle and tenacity by the Blues on that first goal, Zezel, Mongeau, and back to Cavallini who snuck up and blasted one
Blues let Murray skate right on in, and not only get his shot away but his own rebound. And you just know Keenan was steaming after the Blues came back with a bad one on Chevrier. Chevrier was not a very good goalie imho. And this was the end of the road for him. He was also one of those guys generously listed at 5'8 180. Think it was more 5'7 170 if not slightly smaller. Little goalie...and the era of small goalies holding their own was drawing to a close.
