Ive been riding motorcycles for awhile now, and honestly im past the speed phase. I dont care to get to places fast, id rather take my time and enjoy the view. I love my KLX300sm. Having the ability to ride on the street and easily transition to offroad has made me love riding motorcycles even more. If youre looking for something super fast, this bike isnt for you. If youre looking for something versatile and that allows you to explore many different terrains, the KLX will do you just fine.

I have a KLX 300 sm. It is what it is. A fun bike that I have a blast riding. It's not meant to compete against the DRZ. If it was Kawasaki would have made it a KLX 400.. Kawasaki built the 300 so it fits a wide majority of rider's from young to old. It's a great bike for less experienced rider's and it's a blast for veteran rider's to have fun on. Is it compatible to a DRZ? Nope..kawasaki wasn't intending it to be, but it sure is a fun and awesome bike to ride.

@@ronsexton3685 the DRZ is definitely too heavy. I have a few videos with my drz also and plan on doing a side by side comparison with like 0-60 times and top speed and what not. There is something so torquey about the drz that I love but the klx is more faster revving kind of motor. Both are great. If I was doing it all over again I would have just gone with 2 klx’s. The drz does have wider wheels which make handling great but another guy Nathan Baeyens does kart track with his klx which is ultimately what we are going to do with this one.

DRZ is a great bike, but the 300 is a beast. I have the DS version, Delkevic exhaust, KX snorkel, EJK. Very impressed with the acceleration and throttle response.

hmmm.. im stuck on the drz-400 right now, but the klx 300 sm looks tasteful as well for the price range.. maybe even the crf 300 l if the suspension wasn't terrible.. of course i'd love to have a husky 701, wr450f, crf450 rl etc... but its been about 10 years since my last bike (honda magna 750 1994 and i had a 2005 rm 85 before that..) i mainly want the bike for commuting to class for the next year or so, i can take back roads or highway to get there.. only about a 25ish min ride. I don't need something incredibly powerful, but i don't wanna feel like its lacking, and don't wanna have to sink in a few grand to up the power on whatever i purchase. i love the simplicity of the drz400, even the dr650s.. but i also love the technology on the fuel injected bikes. i've been doing my research as i way to get my license back and save up my money in the next few months. i've made up my mind on getting a bike, just not sure which one yet. your comment makes me sure that i have to test ride these before purchasing

@Andrew Tyner I think the reason why I chose the KLX is the 6th gear. I cruise all day Long on the interstate at 70 mph at 7200 rpm, which is mid tac. The 300 has just the right amount of power, but light weight to ride single track and even recreational mx. The DRZ probably has a little bit more torque on lower end, but you really feel the weight. To me the DRZ felt a little top heavy. Also, the DRZ is a lot more money.
If the DRZ was 6 gears and EFI, it would sell like crazy.

Hello. What was the total cost of the performance mods? The DR-Z400SM is already highway capable in stock form, but it costs $1500 more.....list price of course. Your mods puts it at about the same performance level as the as the DR-Z. I saw a decent 75 MPH Highway cruise at around 6500 - 7000 rpm. And a little reserve passing power.

    • @bmotomo421

Short of major internal engine mods, the KLX 300 cannot be modified to equal the power of a bone stock DRZ. Not to mention, the bikes don't even compare in build quality. The DRZ is built a level or two above the KLX. That's not to say the KLX isn't a nice bike. But there are legitimate reasons for the higher price of the DRZ.

My DRZ400S is definitely top heavy - dangerously so. I've installed a lithium battery, light weight headlight faring and tail tidy, and removed passenger foot pegs. It's hopelessly top heavy, the motor sits up very high in the bike, so the top heaviness is incurable. It's a great bike if you like top heavy bikes, but the top heaviness is dangerous. I’ve always had road bikes, and within an hour of riding my drz400s, I was doing pretty good full lock turns at less than one mph. On gravel, with the stock deathwings. if you're popping on decel a little bit is normal but if it's a full on backfire type situation loud as hell on decel you're running lean on your idle circuit and need to remap your EFI system.

Having owned both KLX and DRZ, I can say that the DRZ is much faster on-road, and the KLX is much easier off-road

I've owned both and I can tell you, the KLX will NEVER be on par with a DRZ. It may be enough for YOU though, and if it is that's great. It's just with just a few mods, the DRZ smokes the KLX, EVERYWHERE! You really need to ride both to see the difference. You need to ride a DRZ with an FCR carb on it. You wont even LOOK at a KLX. Like I said, I've owned both and the only one left is the DRZ! I can think of one scenario where I would go with the KLX over a DRZ, and that is if I were riding straight motocross. The KLX is lighter is more flick-able, bit that's it!

Yeah I own both, the FCR carb is next on my list of things to do on the DRZ. The klx is great for what it’s for. You can really feel the lighter weight and smaller tires on the klx vs the drz. Personally I love them both for what they are but excited to throw a FCR on the DRZ

im just saying my drz with a full stage one and a flat slide carb is pushing 42 hp. I'm sure the klx is epic and tons of fun but this drz can do highway at 90 for hours no problem and hit dirt track all in the same day. I did get my drz at a mechanics discount so maybe that has something to do with my impression of the bike
