The moment someone says humans don’t matter in Godzilla or Toku, I just ignore their opinion because it isn’t worth listening to

You started with a big splash onto the kaiju scene with the feature length documentary and now here is an equally strong follow up! While I wish Godzilla vs the Sea Monster did have more monster action, the human characters and their adventure are highly entertaining. I am also happy to see you give Gamera the Brave a favorable showcase as I too love that film and wish we lived in the world where more Toto films were produced.

Personally, I would like to see a kaiju film that doesn’t involve any humans, but not because I hate the humans, far from it, but because I just think it would be a really neat idea.
That being said, yeah… we need the human characters to ground our stories and add a way to follow the story.
Also, finally, someone else who recognizes why Pacific Rim’s human cast is as good as it is

I hope you will cover Ultraman and the Ultra-series as part of your kaiju media discussion in the future. Ultraman is a fundamental part of kaiju media and the human stories in Ultraman have a big impact on how other kaiju media on film are portrayed.

Excellent video, and you're absolutely right about spectacle overshadowing storytelling. It's not even a problem limited to Kaiju movies either.

Coincidentally, I wrote an article that was published in Scary Monsters Magazine called THE BORING PEOPLE PARTS that focused on much of what this video discusses, though not for Kaiju films exclusively. Indeed, I wrote about the human characters and drama of GOJIRA (1954), as well as THE VALLEY OF GWANGI (1969). Your interpretation of the human story for PACIFIC RIM is far kinder than in my article; I felt as if I’ve seen those characters in so many kaiju films that they were simply rehashed, same-old-same-old stereotypes that had me fidgeting in my seat. That being said, I very much enjoyed this video!

Thank you for talking about how so many people view these as just "funny cheap movies" to make fun of. Every piece of art is worth taking seriously, and writing things off and making fun of them just because it doesn't fit your specific criteria of what a movie should be is so sad and cynical

Wow, another amazing video and it was so soon as well. You really hit the nail on the head with this one and highlighted some of my favorite kaiju films that deserve more love. Invasion of Astro monster was one of my favorite Godzilla films as a kid and I'm so glad you gave it the light of the day in this video. Ebirah, horror of the deep is one that my friend likes a lot and is truly such a unique film that needed some praise, he will be happy that you mentioned it.
The Gamera trilogy is obviously amazing but I AM SO GLAD that you talked about Gamera The Brave. I love that film so much and in my opinion it is a definitive modern showa style Gamera story, thank you for talking about. Plus you saying it's your favorite proves that you're are becoming the definitive kaiju youtuber :)
Also you also have also given me a new perspective on Pacific Rim as I never really gave it too much thought but now when I re-watch it I'll be sure to give it another chance.
Once again you have made an amazing video and you'll definitely be going places.

My personal favorite human story has always been Godzilla 2000 - the characterization in that film always felt very distinct and its stuck with me ever since i first watched it and when I think about great human casts, that line up of characters pops into my head.

The human element of Kaiju films generally gives the movies real weight and substance. Without these human characters to anchor the story, all you have is flashy action, which is cool, sure, but doesn't leave near as strong an impression as an emotionally engaging character driven human story.

I personally think the only way a kaiju story could work without human characters if and only if it was a narrated mockumentary, like a fake nature documentary about kaiju biology and ecology and so on.
And yeah, I agree that more people need to pay attention to the human characters. Personally, I may love a good kaiju fight as much as the next person, but I need my kaiju genre humans to be good or at least interesting/funny/etc, or I’ll check out before the monster action even starts.

A list of kaiju movies with my favorite human casts:
    Mothra (1961)
    King Kong vs Godzilla
    Frankenstein vs Baragon
    Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 2
    Godzilla 2000
    Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla
And this one is cheating, but some of the Ultraman shows have excellent human characters.

OK, I think there's something important we should admit about Pacific Rim: the relationship between Raleigh and Mako is, or it should have been, entirely romantic. It's OBVIOUS from their first scene together that these two like each other. They are young and attractive and they have a mental connection that it's difficult to find even in the best of couples. NO ONE has such a deep and intense relationship with a "friend." The CORE of the ENTIRE movie is LOVE, and the only type of love comparable to that of siblings is ROMANTIC, as simple as that. It infuriates me that the script refuses to bring the story to its logical conclusion. Instead of a kiss, both characters look at each other half smiling, somewhat awkwardly, after one of the most disappointing third acts in the history of action cinema (especially after the brilliance of the battle of Hong Kong). What's wrong with passion? Why deny the characters a proper closure? Why can't two people just, you know, be in love with each other? I understand that the filmmakers thought that the romantic subplot was a little too "cliché" but throwing it out the window is a huge mistake, especially considering the performance of Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi.

you're right about the themes of pacific rim but I'm sorry to say I don't think the writing and acting holds up to a high enough level to carry the film. Maybe I need to rewatch it but I didn't find most of the writing very convincing, and it felt like the movie's tone vacillated wildly too often to figure out how it wanted to be seen. That being said, I still like it and thought it was a good movie, but I don't think criticism of the human element of the story is entirely misplaced.

  • @qtar1984

I've heard that Pacific Rim would have been better if the two main Character introductions had been reversed. With the Asian Actress seeing the Mechas as heroic saviors and train to become a pilot. Then have the male protagonist lose his brother in battle in a reality check.

  • @javonscruggs8233
    @javonscruggs8233 6 месяцев назад

I do ageee the human is important even in the monsterverse the human element is very important especially in films like kotm and kong skullisland.
Thought not to say the human element can't vary depending on the story being told. Examples of the human element Varying to film to film depending on their purpose and story being written is in gvk i see the human characters as supporting characters to Kong the protagonist,in pacific rim their role is even more important as their the ones in mecha confronting the kaiju to save the world. The humans narrative may vary depending on the films but they do have a purpose.
That's my general take on the matter.

I would argue that the Heisei era film, Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 2, has one of the best human casts of any of the Japanese Godzilla movies. The human story is not only intertwined with the kaiju, but the characters are actually likeable.
