SNK makes a VH-300 if you want the full Ampeg VH140c in a more compact head and 300 watts. SNK also makes a two channel version of the pedal with the Clean channel too. Also the Crate GX-130c is basically the same amp - also a 90’s amp. Look at me posting before watching the whole video - you and a lot of us channel fans knew this. That version does look great!
I had the SNK VHD pedal but I upgraded to the SNK VH300 amp which is a 300 watt VH140C clone. It sounds awesome! On a sad note... I had the VH140C in the early 90s but gave it to a friend when I hung up playing guitar in a band for a while. I miss that amp!
@@TaylorDanley I have to say that the original sounds slightly better still. It's slightly brighter, like it has more presence or something. Nothing that a good EQ pedal can't add.
Love the SNK VHD! Sounds amazing with an HM2 in front. You should also try the Master Effects Marauder, it's a preamp clone of the Peavey Supreme 160, another of the early death metal solid state amps. I believe Dying Fetus used them at some point.
The pedal sounded sick. It was almost identical to the real amp in a mix. But the real star of this episode is that guitar. Not sure if I would ever use the single coil in the neck, but it is there. I love pointy guitars that still manage to be comfortable to play in a sitting position.

@@Redraptor6214 they SHOULD be cheap, but I still see them going for well over $500. One on Reverb right now for $700. They're not VH140C prices, but they should never been that high in price.
The pedal sounds and looks badass. It is odd to me that no company has attempted a VH140C amp sim. You'd think Ugritone or Audio Assault or even Audiority would have done one by now.
I'm starting to think those old school death metal toned are superior to modern metal tones. They are thinner, more abrasive ect, but they are unflinchingly aggressive and ugly.
@Ahab2710 Well one would think the technology would result in better sounds. Old school death metal was not recorded in high end studios by the absolute best engineers on the absolute best equipment.
@@Patrick-857 that's the point I think. Modern metal sounds way too clean and perfect, even with all the distortion, it ends up sounding sterile. It's the rawness of the old school sound that makes it sound good. Same goes for modern movies, cars ecc, the technological advancement made everything technically better, but without a soul.
Yeah like I said, I think these amps were used because you used to be able to get them cheap... They were loud and did the sound. Then they became sort of legendary by happen stance, not because they were novel in any way.
@@TaylorDanley Well... Suffo (Despise the Sun and Souls to Deny, HOLY FUCK IT'S THICC), Mortal Decay and 3-5th Dying Fetus albums did actually have great tones achieved with these Ampegs. Internal Bleeding have been a mixed bag (some records of theirs sound cool, but on others the tone is abysmal, not in the cool way). And now Sanguisugabogg use boosted VH140C's and their tone is crazy good. In addition, the voicing is basically "5150 with the mid control shifted to ~1000Hz".
Would love some more SNK content, as mentioned by others the VH300 amp would be sick, but I’d be more interested in seeing demos of his Bludgeon and RG300ES amps if possible
First and foremost, shoutout to RIP Custom Guitars, definitely deserve all the praise and hype they receive. Funny you mention Dying Fetus, I love all their tones, but my favorite is the Reign Supreme tone, and the pedal I use is Amptweaker’s TMP2; nails all high gain tones, and it was designed by James Brown. If Cult FX were to do a special blackout of the TMP2 I’d buy one as soon as they went up.
Just a heads up to anyone who's interested, there's an Ampeg VH140C head in Cedar Rapids, IA for sale on marketplace. Without looking up the listing, I think the seller is asking like $400 or $500. Cosmetics are about 9/10. 🤷🏼♂️

TBH I don’t think it’s reliability with these amps, I think it’s just that they are really old now (even vintage some would say), and its unlikely they were ever maintained since they are solid state. I think people assume capacitors and plastic ribbon connectors last forever 😆
@@TaylorDanley true! Ive just ran into the dirty fx loops and such. Easy fix with deoxit. But my old crate gx130 had chorus problems which is facilitated by the stereo power, and now with my ss140c. I wanna hear this thing in a tube amp's return jack. I can get decent tone from mine, but it's not as good as what you have going on through the Ampeg. I find I have to CRANK the presence on my power amps to get a usable tone (I don't think the Ampeg has a presence associated to it's power section).
It's worth mentioning how many old school 90s death metal bands have abandoned their former sterile high gain sound that hardly works live anyways for a more conventional tone. Take Suffocation self titled album for example. Probably nobody would ever deny that they still sound brutal although their guitar tone on this record is a lot more "earthy". Some people seem to fail to understand that more gain doesn't always mean more brutal.
Absolutely, a lot of gain doesn't sound heavier. If anything it's the opposite. It's a pet peeve of mine hearing young (or even not so young) bands playing with cranked gain - it just turns the guitars to a smooth, inoffensive and inaudible mush. You need to set your gain to before the attack starts getting weaker and the bottom starts getting flubby. Very high gain might sound good when practising on your own or even when recording, but in a live setting not so much. Actually listening to how your band sounds strangely seems a skill that not many possess.
@@Ksrwilhelm Absolutely this! I can confirm that many guitarists have a wrong understanding of how aggressive sound is created. Its a simple rule: Gain always fights attack and attack is more important when you want to sound heavy. Heavy musicians are even scared of more guitar dynamics because it gets significantly more difficult to play e.g. death metal with a less distorted sound. But that's the key for the bite you are looking for.
I'm more interested in sounds like Tomb of the Mutilated, Sinister's Diabolical/Hate, and Deicide's Once Upon. I'm currently recording with Metallica: Blackened impulse response, using a SD invader (bridge).
So the pedal definitely sounds a little cleaner, but the amp sounds more 'open'. There's a bit of a constrained tone to the pedal compared to the amp, which might be solved with a bit of eq, though honestly I'm not sure if I'm describing what I'm hearing very well. They both sound awesome though.
