Considering that I have 0 racing knowledge and I'm about to buy First wheel, this is pure gold. Thanks for sharing. In game footage helps a lot, that's the little extra that is missing in some other videos.
If you buy logitech, buy used for dirt cheap. If you end up getting bit by the sim racing bug within 1-2 months, you're gonna want to upgrade to direct drive.
A bit of warning, so you do not get disappointed. The racers you will encounter in the first period (length depends on how fast you progress and how much time you spend racing), will have zero respect for defensive moves. They will most likely hit you, deliberately or not and punt you off the track. One skill a sim racer needs, especially in the beginning, is to quickly 'feel' the opponent. "Is this a safe driver or an overly aggressive driver?" The latter you cannot really defend against in any other way than to be faster. If you are not, you will have to let them pass and probably they will be in the gravels a few turns up. If not, in any case you will have some chance of getting to the finish line.
Thanks for your video! The concept of controlling the middle of the track and maintaining overlap is very helpful. So many drivers resort to weaving and blocking but you articulate how to actually race while defending which is much more fun and rewarding!🙏🏼🏁
Absolutely. There is a time and place for tactically letting people go by. If you are a moving roadblock, and you start queueing up 10 other cars behind you, you might’ve been more efficient to let the one single car by and try to follow. that’s more of a race strategy decision
@@danielmorad This is excellent advice! I do this a lot because, frankly, I cannot handle a guy in the mirror (one is enough, does not need to be 10 🙂) for more than a short while. I get super nervous that they will hit me so I start acting strange and then they are sure to do exactly that. Letting them pass is almost always my preferred option unless it is very close to the end of the race. More often than not, if they could catch me, they will not slow me down either. I enjoy much more hunting than being the hunted, even if it means crossing the finish line one place down sometimes. Impossible approach for a professional driver of course but if one is racing for fun and not for money things are different.
defending can get really complicated. like you said "controlling the exit" is probably the most important part. and if you're on the inside (weather defending or overtaking) you control the other car, especially side by side. and it's a powerful thing to do when you overtake someone into a corner too
Step 0 is assess opponent behaviour (in sim especially). If they are crazy aggressive, let them through or they will kill you. I love defending, but my SR is so low because of the “killer drones”. I’m learning to let the loonies through to mess up their own race, not mine. ;)
I would love to watch your reviews on current sim racing gear available in the market (from low-end to high-end tier), your knowledge as a pro driver will show us how those products behave against real-world feel.
This is such an amazing content! Thank you so much for sharing your real life experience with the sim racing community. Keep up the great work, I love your videos!
Would like to see an appendix of when is the right time to place your car on the defensive line. Is it early on in the straight or when getting closer to the braking zone? Also, when not to defend, or should you always defend?
It all depends on the shape and braking zone of the corner. You also need to move over in anticipation of what your opponent will do. You cannot move in reaction.
Really appreciated insight, me gusta 👍👍 I don’t know if you already talked about it, but how to manage the rotation out of a corner, the proper feeling to be on the edge Maybe also how to induce a kind of threshold in our driving to hold a proper pace like pushing 80% and not being all the time on the limit Hope it’s helpful, cheers
Absolutely exploded onto the sim/streaming scene. Great content so far mate. I’m the old man that never raced struggling around on an old PC and enjoying the art of positioning a car that’s completely under control so that you get an advantage on guys you’re racing with. Sadly, I’m not terribly quick, so the guys around 2k I’m racing most of the time are just about being in front no matter what - so it’s rare I find good guys to battle with. Guys like you I’m normally waving through so I lose the minimum amount of time rather than deluding myself into thinking we’re racing because I blocked you or parked it on the apex for a lap or two when there’s an hour left in the race and we’re on an alternate strategy lol. Anyway - thanks for the insights. Your FOV vid was a game changer for me.
Just on the end of the vid. A suggestion. Making a video on driver conduct. Explaining that if you’re around quicker guys, it’s smarter to follow them than to stuff it up the inside of them. Race awareness and the like. It’s my biggest issue. I have no problem finishing last on merit, but I have a real problem with dirty drivers or drivers that will ruin your race by not being aware of the bigger picture. The PCC races are a perfect example of where people could work with cars in other divisions to get a better result in their own race, but instead will race each corner slowing everyone down. I guess I’d sum it up as picking your battles, but how do we get that into Joe average the sim racers head?
I realized that I began to improve my English just for the sake of the videos on this channel) Very informative, thanks for the video! And as usual "From Russia with Love" :)
MORAD GO VROOM loving the tips all your knowledge makes me better on sim racing and sometimes the advice helps on karting tracks too thank you a million
I really liked this video. It’s “basics” but sometimes you overlook small things. Keeping that overlap was one of the things I overlooked. Always focused on defending by just being faster than my opponents, not by “controlling” them. Thanks for the videos man, I always check for new ones on my feed
Good points regarding overlap and over-slowing to defend the inside. I would have added a part when to defend and not to defend. If you are holding up someone way faster early in the race you loose time on people behind that can catch up. So I always check there quali times and 5 lap avg when I see someone closing in to decide if it worth it. Sure last laps I defend everything. It is more of an issue in online racing due to first lap carnage or fast folks purposefully not qualifying.
Hi Dan ...I'm a new subscriber & enjoy learning from one who has actually driven a real race car & blended it into Sim racing. I take your advice. This lesson brings two questions ...the "Cross-over"? I suck at setups & tend to be slower, so I use the one place EVERYONE has to slow down for ...turns & I use the crossover method where I can. However, I get accused of being a "dive bomber" for executing the move successfully. What are the rules considering this? I'm glad you did not use the term "Blocking" ...ONLY in one venue in all of racing sports is blocking accepted ...that is Sim racing & it is no different than tripping a faster runner in a sprint race. If the dang car & driver is FASTER than me ...how can I call myself a winner if I BLOCKED him from passing? Makes no sense. Aside from Blue Flags ...are there rules on Blocking in REAL life racing? ...that we should be "simulating"?
I would like to see more content like this in your channel including real life and simulator racing tips, It would be nice if you could do reviews on your accessories like rigs, wheels, pedals etc. Good job & great content.
Awesome video with good information. Interesting comment about an overlap with the car you're trying to overtake. Sometimes I'll purposely hang back a little when passing so it leaves more options to overtake on the exit
I would love to see more of your real racing car... how is the process of testing, learning a track and set your mind to race in your actual championship (Fanatec GT World Challenge America in this case). Really cool content... the channel is great. PD: Last weekend I tested NOLA motorsport Park in Assetto Corsa. I used a GT3 Porsche and wow... nice combo and the track is really cool.
Great video as always! Do you have any tips on how to learn a new track? As in how do you tackle it in sim racing? Maybe that could be a whole video?! lol anyways thanks for the awesome content as usual!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I really appreciate these videos. It is well done, full of professional advice, and will help me to become a better competitor in my sim racing journey!!!
Great info man. Thanks. Well presented, stylish editing and good quality. One thing would be to improve your drawing ability :) your cars were a bit off, hah. But I am an artist and an architect so I'm a bit picky. What I found really useful was the top down view of the simulation. You could almost skip the drawing part and just explain it with the sim footage. Maybe pausing the video and drawing your arrows etc over the top of the paused sim race? Other than that, I think you are on the right path. Just keep the quality level high and keep improving your speaking / explaining / presentation ability (accurate, yet simple, and succinct would work best I think) and I think you will reach whatever goals you have with this channel. I can't wait to build a rig similar to yours! It's awesome.
Bought your gloves a few days ago and them are pretty Good. Like some other German EDrivers said they are not so fast broke like alpine or sparco ;) And your vids are very Informative for a lot of people, also the quality is great. May for a feature Video compare Setups in RL and in ERace like Iracing or ACC
Awesome. We built them to be more durable. That’s one of the main reasons we started making them. My race gloves that were $300 kept ripping so easy I had to keep bringing them to get fixed at my tailor.
Thanks Dan, great content! Question for you, I was racing on Nordschleife, the driver behind started flashing me to let him go by. This was dangerous because we were in a serpintine stretch with really hard curbs and no where to go to let him/her by. Two comments, first, if I get a blue flag, absoluetly I'll let the upcomming driver by as soon as there's space to do so. Second, if the driver is literally one place behind me, on basically the same pace as me, and wants by and is flashing me, I feel like he/she needs to earn the right to pass me. What is the etiquette here?
If they are flashing you and they are fighting you for position, it just means that they are struggling to get by you so it should give you the confidence that you are doing a good job
Super interesting, thanks! Could you do a video about how to approach corners downhil vs. uphill. vs. flat, please? I have such a blind spot with downhill bends - specifically the Senna Ss at Interlagos and Paddock Hill Bend at Brands Hatch. Any tips would be much appreciated.
Any progress in the ACC vs Iracing for realism video? I personally think ACC is worlds better just due to Iracing having shit slip physics and turning into ice anytime you lose traction. But I’d love to see a pro GT3 drivers opinion vs a avid track driver
