Awesome video! I was born in Show Low and I lived in the White Mountains for a decade of my life. It brings back such pleasant memories of my childhood. It's beautiful countryside, and it's nice to see that there are still black bears around! Thanks for uploading your video.
@@JerryArizona I remember Mt. Baldy. I climbed it as a kid. Lots of fun. As a kid, I was scare when my father drove along the Mogollon Rim. I was afraid we were gonna go over the edge. My father wasn't worried, of course.
Not sure how I missed this old video... I had a good sighting of a cinnamon black bear near McFarland Springs in May of this year. Even though these are busier trails it's still really enjoyable. The first part of Houston Bros is good stuff! All of these network of trails in the CoCo Rim area are fun hikes. Tthe perfect introduction for people who want to get into backpacking. The downside is the trails tend to get busy!
In all the hiking we have done over the years we saw 1 bear and he or she was on top of ridge about 100 yards walking the ridge. We spent probably 20 minutes walking in ravine looking up and singing a made up bear song. Bear was not willing to give up vantage point and we had to get down in same direction. We eventually lost sight of it but it was as real as it got for us.
Thanks, man. Your videos are pretty slick too. This has been quite the year for wildlife for us, that's for sure. I can't imagine seeing a grizzly. Those things make black bears look like babies.
I camped in barber shop canyon once , when I got up in the morning my stove and fuel canister was gone. I assumed that a raccoon needed it more than I did.
u bar heading north to pinchot cabin shouldnt be too hard on a bike, eh? turning 50 in july, got a 50 mile route planned, starting at u-bar, ending in Pine in my driveway... will be posting updates soon on my page, finally. meanwhile, love the geeking out on blurry backgrounds! i just dont get that option with my GoPros!!!
I'm not a mountain bike rider by any stretch of the imagination, but there are sections in there that I would think would be difficult. Especially going downhill between McClintock & Floyd Springs and down and up Merrit Draw.
Yeah bears change things quickly...I don’t mess around with bears! I like the time lapse clips of the hiking...are you using the time warp (hyperlapse) or regular time lapse?
My wife always made fun of my fear of bears....But my issue is they don't go for the kill....they just start eating at whatever part of you they get ahold of. But the more I see (this was #4 & 5), the more I'm realizing they typically just want to get away from people. That was hyperlapse. Pretty cool function as long as you don't over use it.
@@JerryArizona They say only 1 out of 100 Bears will attack you, but it could be the first one you encounter. Always have a self defense system handy...
Not sure, honestly. Typically, I think they hybernate in December and wake up March/April, but that might just be for colder climates. For the most part, I'm learning they just want to steer clear of people. I've seen 3 (+cubs) up on the Mogollon rim so far, and they just walked away from us each time.
This was a very helpful video. We appreciate it!
That was a beautiful area. Another great episode.

I love the White Mountains. Saw one bear on the Mt Baldy loop and four up on the Mogollon rim within the last 2 years.

We only saw one person on U Bar. Houston Brothers is definitely busy though.

I've gotten a lot more used to bears now. We've seen four (plus cubs). None of them wanted anything to do with us.
Love your editing. We seen a grizzly here the other day, def didn't stick around. better safe then...... eaten.

Raccoons are notorious for their camp stove collections.

maybe a dumb question, but what months are bear season is this area? They hibernate right?

Jerry is correct, December thru March you're going to be bear free. Don't let them scare you though! Just be aware and hang your food.
