my 91 yr old dad had every one of his albums & would sit in the evenings and listen and laugh ---and we 5 kids learned all the words! I Love Allan Sherman!!! Long live the kind of parody
When I was young growing up in Boston, I used to listen to this song and all of Allan Sherman's albums with my parents and my brother. Years later, I moved to New York and ended up moving with my wife to Ocean Parkway in Brooklyn where we had and raised our two sons -- that was over thirty years ago -- and we're still in Brooklyn, within walking distance of Ocean Parkway.
Having been an Allan Sherman fan from the age of seven, I have great memories of listening over and over to My Son The Nut. That was my brother’s choice of album and it was played to death! When he left for college I inherited all of his albums and continued to play this one when I needed a laugh. As I started serious record collecting, I made sure to get all of the rest of Sherman’s albums and thoroughly enjoyed them. I absolutely went crazy when Rhino announced that they were bringing out a box of EVERYTHING Sherman did (or at least all the stuff that wasn’t on hold because of circumstances beyond their control). I own the 1500th copy of a Limited Edition run of 4000 and it gets played often. Now if I could just get my hands on a copy of A Gift Of Laughter which is his autobiography I would be on cloud nine. Sherman was that good, but he died way too soon. Only Stan Freberg came close to rivaling Allan Sherman and he got started roughly ten years prior. But there is one more astonishing thing that happened with Allan Sherman’s involvement. He was the one who introduced Bill Cosby to the world and produced his first three Warner Brothers albums. If only Cos had stuck to telling the stories of his childhood and acting in comedy shows. It would have been quite a legacy. As it was Sherman died a horrid death in 1972 and his producer was witness to it. But we do have all of the music to keep us laughing. And that’s the important thing.
My mother used to play these records of him and we all would laugh and have fun listening to him. Hearing him again brings back the good memories.Thanks.
Have all the albums. We listened to them nonstop in Miami and when we visited all of our cousins in Brooklyn, and I still can never get enough. now my daughter adores Allan Sherman as well.
My grandmother introduced me to this guy when I was tiny. She’d put the LP on the hi-fi and start crying laughing. I was too young to get all the jokes at the time, but I laugh until my stomach hurt. I still do.
Yes! You might like my new biography of Allan Sherman. It's called Overweight Sensation: The Life and Comedy of Allan Sherman (Brandeis U. Press, 2013).
That certainly explains why there are so many little-seen photos in here! Bought the book a few years ago and started it, but am still getting used to using reading glasses and therefore unfortunately put down a lot of books when I don't have them on me. I love to know everything I can about this talented but deeply troubled man who meant so much to our family.
Reminds me of my earlier Days Growing up in Brooklyn.? R.I.P. Allan Sherman.? For you are missed by all of your Fans.Sadly he passed away @ age 48 in 1973.Thank goodness for the Music that he left behind for us.?
My sister and I used to sing his songs in the water at Rockaway Beach. You need an analyst was one of our faves. And in the original Irish version, our family name is part of the song, so it's doubly delightful.
I grew up in West Roxbury, a suburb of Boston, listening to this album with my parents. Who knew that twenty years later I'd be living with my wife and two kids in an apartment -- on Ocean Parkway in Brooklyn, the same street that Sherman talked about coming home to in this song. I remember coming home to our apartment on that very street for years. In fact, over twenty years later, we're still in Brooklyn within a ten minute's walk of Ocean Parkway and that same neighborhood he sang about...
LOL! I was born in NY, my family was in Sunnyside and Jackson Heights and I remember being in the car listening to all these songs as a kid and now decades later I'm up in Southie making my wife listen to all these songs again.
II remember Allan Sherman songs growing up and anybody that grew up in Brooklyn or the Bronx and is over 50 identifies with the Working Class Middle Class Images that these songs conjure up! They were a special time and the people had a special Chemistry and how I wish I could talk with some of the people that were part of that culture. Anytime I meet a "throwback of that culture I want to hug them and thank them!!!" I grew up on Ocean Ave and Ave H in Brooklyn. Believe it or not there are still some throwback Allan Sherman types that live in Brooklyn, especially at the South End of Ocean Parkway near Coney Island. Great People ! I am Italian American so I can definitely identify with the culture, It is very similar. These people that Sherman sings about are the "Salt of the Earth" People!! Successful Christians and Catholics get it. Those that want to be prejudice against them will pay the price Thats just a Fact- Ive witnessed it. Love Thy Brothers. Thanks you Allan.

my dad loved Allan Sherman, and had many of the classic records. My Son the Folk Singer, My Son the Celebrity, these two were the ones we played most. He was a genius, and his music will live forever, especially to those who know the kind of jewish humour and the old time culture he refers to.
I once saw Allan Sherman on TV with Steve Allen, and they were making up songs on the spot based on whatever ideas came from the audience. Some young women gave as her topic “Eve Jackabowski.” Sherman is singing “Eve Jackabowski” over and over, muttering “What the Hell rhymes with Eve Jackabowski?” He suddenly snaps his fingers and says “Got it!” And immediately sings “Eve Jackabowski, lend me your house key, Please, I want to come in.” This man was a genius.
Recognized as a true contemporary wit in 1962, Sherman displayed a genius for lyrics and cultural humor. He knocked out three very funny albums with the support of Harpo Marx and his son, Bill Marx. By the time Pres. Kennedy was murdered in the streets of Dallas, Americans were done with Sherman's levity. Sadly, Sherman didn't know that, and died of a broken heart. At least for awhile, Americans could be found mimicking Sherman's schtick, in a happier time.

Sherman's peak lasted a little beyond the Kennedy assassination. FOR SWINGING LIVERS ONLY did pretty well in 1964, and he had a HELLO MUDDAH board game out in 1965.
I have been a fan of Allan Sherman for many years and I always got a kick out of this song, especially the end where he sings the last line badly. He was a terrible singer, though he was so funny. It's a shame he died so young at the age of 49.
No, It's supposed to be a distinctly Jewish parody of an old folk song. All the songs on the album are meant to convey the perspective of a Jewish comic circa 1962.
David Gartner You guys are nuts! The U.S. is in trouble because of the fascist left and Obama. Hillary would of been the worst president ever. Still though, Alan Sherman has nothing to do with politics. Some people will use any platform to rant and rave.
Ummm...fascism is inherently right-wing. One can't be both left-wing and fascist any more than one could be right-wing and communist. Trying reading a few history books.

When I turn down the volume on interview videos and the like, and turn on closed captioning, I am astounded at how little sense the transcribed words make. Automated voice recognition without a "bias" toward the subject matter and dialect of the speech is an absolute disaster unless it is review by a human.
