Next week on Military Matters: T-80 blows up when pup jumps under it instead of Leopard as it was supposed to.
Goliath is still cuter...
Yeah but this works
Sadly there isn't a *hmph* emoji so just imagine it.
Especially with a smile and googly eyes!
A modern battlefield with small kamikaze drones, small mine-equipped RC cars, and small near-silent observation drones (& all the regular conventional weapons) must be an absolute draining mental nightmare.
I try to imagine what activities could (relatively speaking) feel safe. But on a peer to peer battlefield now you just never know if you're being watched, and/or if a 30cmx30cm drone is going to just come out of nowhere (sky, from a little shell crater, roll out from behind a tree) and deliver a mine direct.
Like how do you reconnoiter an area well enough to be sure you haven't missed something the size of a shoebox. Scary stuff
Look up videos of the Darpa offset. 250 ground and air drones autonomously clearing an urban area. Even clearing inside houses. Crazy stuff.
Think the famous "Night Witches" combat operations but with remote controlled devices.
Small wonder the war in Ukraine is playing out more like the First World War than the Second. With artillery in such preponderance and the inability to mass troops or vehicles without detection and subsequent barrage, both sides are trying to figure out how to make territorial gains while avoiding losing the attritional war. The Ratel is one of many ways Ukraine is proving itself far more adept at this.
This was one of the best mini games in early GTA games. Kiiiiiiiiiiiiill Frenzy!
Lockheed-Martin "we can turn them out for 11ty trillion dollars for 100!" Pentagon: "Sounds like a good deal-we'll take 10,000!"😂😂
Interesting, APS will probably not target due to the slow speed and may be less noisy than a quadcopter.
I don't think aps actually detects things on the ground at all
They had something like this in an episode of Batman The Animated Series.
"Beware the Gray Ghost"
a very interesting video Mr.Ed as always.Have a good one.
The Goliath tracked explosive was wire-guided, not wireless.
Sure, but that’s still remote control.
(The “clicker” generation knows what I mean!)
the US used R/C T-Maxx trucks with platforms for mounting explosives to as well. My unit had access to them in Iraq in 2006.
At 02:14 in this video:
FWIW, I was reminded of _those things_ as well.
I had refrained from screaming at the screen - I had faith in you!
The major potential issue is a signal blocking by terrain. Even for my FPV planes I prefer to fly above 200 meters, because video connection is much better. However, if it can use Starlink, flying repeater drones or some autonomy, it could be extremely effective.
If it did use Starlink, Musk would block it.
To "prevent world war three".
A spotter drone could serve as a relay.
unless the Musketeer decides to cut them off, like he's been asked by tsar vlad the intriguer/invader, to do.
@@cdl0I imagine that’s what was being done in the demo video.
Makes it more expensive
RC Bomb Cars have been around for ages I think the difference this one has is it can carry a payload nasty enough to take out even some what armoured security vehicles or Light APC and the like too.
It complements the aerial equivalent well too. But if they wanted to go REALLY cheap they could perhaps go with glider bombs though those would perhaps be slow enough to be shot down they would be effective in certain circumstances as something very stealthy (perhaps for night use) & such a cheap RC glider would be as cheap as an RC car.
The Gi Joe Classified toyline has a Character called Firefly who's 2nd toy has an RC car very much like this one in the thumbnail and his previous one had a flying Drone that could plant timed explosives.
I can see how things like this could be quite nasty if anyone could just control them with their Phone.
It is a rather nasty mid point between a Sniper and an anti-tank missile. and this technology could be done so cheaply that they could be like Macross Missle Spam and make a lot of people very very jumpy.
Reminds me a bit of early experiments with Balloon dropped Explosives.
Pretty sure RC cars are lot cheaper than anything flying. Even glide bombs need advanced control systems to accurately hit targets because they're flying. RC cars only need to know left, right, front or back
I dod not anticipate the Goliath antitank platform of WW2 to return at all...
But Russia is already doing it with real tanks!
@@goaway7346nonsense
Hey~you shared amazing vlog- take it easy,🖖
Might be useful in the Gazan tunnels.
Or to the occupation tanks
With all of this, the RC model commuity will highly suffer from legislation.
Wow, so innovative! I wonder what microcontroller and what wireless communication protocol Ratel uses.
GREAT topic! Would love to see more of what Ukraine is doing with COTS tech. "Nothing is new under the Sun." Boy, ain't that the truth! Kid's toys are now combat weapons. What this world has come to...but I recall reading about that as something to come as well in the Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth or what I sometimes refer to as the Field Manual. Cheers!
To be fair, radio control started out as military tech. It was only through the development of solid state electronics did it become a child's toy. I distinctly remember the Royal Navy having a radio-controlled Dreadnought in the 1920's to serve as a decoy for air power experiments...
Eh, I wouldn’t say radio control _started_ with the military. Remote operation is an idea that is hundreds of years old. The advent of radio brought it into a new era.
While inventors, industrialists, and arms manufacturers certainly catered to the military (because: money!) with radio controlled applications, it’s an oversimplification to say it “started” with the military.
Too often we credit the entity which popularized a thing with the thing’s invention. However, in most cases - as is true here - the truth is a little more nuance than that.
@@theotherohlourdespadua1131 Even this piece of hardware is not a Ukrainian development, they took radio control as a basis, and ISIS terrorists used a similar method before, the manuals of the owners of ISIS and Ukraine are the same .. like the owner as a whole!
On the subject of innovative thinking, I've seen an article on a British Army trial of electric cross-country bikes. They've tested them for forward positioning of sniper/screening/reconnaissance troops and tank killer teams with the newer lightweight Charlie G. With an ever smaller army, you have to work out how to do more with less.
We have no sustainability, no amount of fancy toys will solve the problem of not enough boots on the ground
It's somewhat alleviated by being a subset of NATO though
Realistically the uk would never enter a war alone
The ukriane army has been using electric bikes for some time now. Often with a NLAW or javelin
At some point I hope that this technology will make going to war TOO dangerous for both sides.
I wonder what its "lurking" capability is, for ambush.
I’m not wondering…….
Or for leading the way through minefields?
Would it be able to drag something like a Bangalore Torpedo, to clear a path through the mines?
Seems to me it would be most useful if the payload can be released or ejected to save the vehicle for multiple uses instead of being single use. Drive up to an enemy position, release munition on a timed fuze, retreat and repeat without putting any humans in danger. No matter how simple and cheap an RC car with an anti-tank mine is, an anti-tank mine with a digital wrist-watch timer (do those still exist anymore?) by itself is still cheaper, even if the RC car only lasts for a few missions.
True. But that adds another point of failure to the attack right? What if the timer fail? Or if the enemy noticed the drone when it leaves?
It'll certainly be cheaper and more sustainable from resources perspective. But it could miss the opportunity
Could be useful for the first wave of an attack. Triggering any mines and drawing fire before exploding at trenches.
The nature of war has just changed and nobody knows which direction it is heading. Are the expensive weapons now mostly redundant. Only time will tell. Crew for submarines are also being hard to recruit, particularly for SSBN's. 3 months of not using a smart phone for contact with your social media friends
A vid with several different prototypes came out a few months ago. They were already in use. Typical fab shop laughing over beers at projects. Main change over the concept is better bigger tires so it didn't get stuck. They were initially too often.
Does it have to be trained by having a charging station under a tank?
It's a while that I'm waiting for a new video and I'm starting to become worried!!
I hope that you'd be all right everything would be fine. Wish to hear your voice soon.
Apologies, had a death in the family. Should be a video out later today.
Goes like a bomb!
So a modern day Goliath
I have no idea what "ratel" means in Ukrainian, but it's the Afrikaans word for the honey badger - a smart, tenacious and vicious little devil. Seems appropriate. (It's also the name of a kick-ass IFV.)
I don't think it's a Ukrainian word
Friendly RC-XD inbound.
Didn't one of those chase Tom Selleck in Runaway?
That is a reference I was not expecting.
New arena for Battle Bots.
I wonder what conditions it is used in. Presumably terrain will be a big limitation to it, you can't exactly send someone out to right it when it falls over. It is going to be easier to deal with than an ariel drone as well if it is spotted.
On the other hand, as long as it does what it required, then good hunting!
OTOH, it adds a different dimension of stealth, mobility, and precision to the IED/landmine class of weapons.
Clearing an area must be a nightmare these days. The ways to get killed continue to multiply.
But radar can spot a flying drone from far away. You won't see this hiding in the grass until it moves for the kill
RC-XD INBOUND
Tank or BMX track ?
They should dust off the 75MM pack howitzer
I've seen this in at least three different movies.
And GTA 1
_The Dead Pool_ with Clint Eastwood springs to mind.
@@mbryson2899 That was one I was thinking of. Also Marvel's Winter Soldier and that old Tom Selleck scifi movie, Runaway. Neat film, and ahead of its time in some ways. Worth watching.
@@MM22966 Thank you for the recommendations. 👍
Anybody remember this drone in Frontline fuel of War
RCX drones from CoD are real now, who knew!
it reminds me of the german goliath self-propelled mine during WWII, with great improovements in operaion thanks to modern electronics and video developpment
Clearly someone in Ukraine played GTA III ...
A new version of the German WW2 Goliath.
Game over...................
Its an actual rcxd
that's an RCXD.
Oh God, we know who is making AT mine harness's for dogs, conscripts and well everybody!!
Robot wars has entered the battlefield
Not even April 1st..
Now military think tanks will add a new unit to their TOE, the anti drone unit
Google "Fire Ant" tank killer.
Bet they would work in tunnels too.
And underneath occupying tanks
Ukraine is showing how common sense and the use of COTS (aka off the shelf tech) can do the job of absurdly overpriced, long lead time systems for literally 99% less $.
Think we'll see these in Gaza soon
following a EOD guy, ukraine recycles what they dug out of their soil and deliver it back to sender. have seen footage of those mines outfitted with a tail and being dropped by a flying drone. this is another intresting way to recycle ordonance.
Between this and the quadcopter with it's own bomb bay, it looks like Ukrainians are full of new and innovative ways of giving back all of those Russian AT mines littering their countryside.
Goliath mk2
I can see these being hacked by the enemy .. then Ooopps ! Finally Sky Net will takeover and then the fun really begins..
They need to make it able to drive when flipped over.
Its design is good, but the only problem is with the wireless adapter.
Just hope the Russians don’t strap explosives onto dogs…again
When you used to talk of the future of warfare you envisioned laser weapons or maybe battlemech suits. Turns out the future of warfare is a bunch of guys sitting in a basement with game controllers and a TV, sending wave after wave of toy-cars and RC planes at each other. Who would have thunk it that the war hero of the future was the nerd living in his moms basement.
The war heroes always were the nerds. Look at Bletchley Park.
Threat to beach invasion forces on Taiwan??
xcountry ability must be useless
Not sure about that.
They're 50% wheels.
@@goaway7346 wheeled vehicles chasing armoured vehicles x country? OK chap
@@paulwalker427you know tanks usually stop to engage the enemy right? They aren’t going full speed at all times, especially in combat.
:)
Why not train some robot dogs to seek shelter under the tank while carrying AT mines. What, just think all the money saved on dog food.
Who would want to be a soldier nowadays
You
@@andrewwiggins9262 I'll pass thanks
@@Ob1sdarkside I was just answering your question dude
so when terrorist use suicide drones its bad but whne ukrainians do it its powerful and brave... makes me think
yes one is a nation state while the other isn't
@@mondude89 same underhanded tactics
Free Palestine, the west is the real terror@@mondude89
They're called tactics. They're not good or bad. They just work.
Good/bad depends on who uses them and who's deciding
Too much call of duty
but without the gaming pc or console and the obnoxious kids who eats their mics lol
looks like parts are cheaply made by a 3D printer no need for a large mega factory to build them just a nerd with a 3D in he's bedroom to help win a war that Putin can't win
You must not know much about manufacturing then
