Have you used valley trusses before? I have and they are not fun! I would rather build a roof as shown in this video.
If you know all the right tricks roof trusses are a breeze.. I've probably done hundreds of them and I've ran into issues In the beginning and have since learned how to start off right and what to do to avoid complications.
We do it just like you man!
they always come square on the bottom and I feel like it looks like shit and is not as good as rafters cut to fit "tight" by a framers standard.

Dude- I stumbled upon this video just this morning and I gotta tell y’all, for years I’ve fought valley rafters cuts where it’s taken me all day for a simple 8 rafter overbuild. Today it took me less than 4 hours. Holy crap! Thank you for posting this informational video. You explained it all so well!
Chris H.
I appreciate your comment Chris! Good luck with your projects!
Your patience is amazing…your attention to detail is exquisite….they say “you ain’t bragging if you can deliver the goods” and obviously you can deliver them…thank you….
You are welcome. Thank you for this comment! Subscribers like you that appreciate all of the effort I put in these videos make it worth your while! I’m just thankful I can help others using this platform!
Hi, I just wanted to take a moment a thank you for this video. My Pastor and I adding a new addition to our Church and the addition is going to have two valleys in which neither of us have built before. This video and a few others really helped. Thank You.
I'm no carpenter and building a roof has always been a challenge for me, but your explanation, has helped take some of my doubt away. There's a lot of information covered in this video, thanks for taking the time to show us how it's done.
Great video. Don't give away all the secrets. I've been framing for twenty years and this is where the basics start. Nice work. You've inspired me to vlog my next project. 24x28 garage build.
I love doing the Vlog. It’s lot of work but fun.
Man, let me tell you so many videos out there trying to show you how to do things. But this one is the real and perfect explanation of how you do it. Great block of instruction. Thanks
Yeah thanks a lot for watching! Be sure to subscribe and more content to come
Just attached my new addition to the existing house. Never could have done it without viewing this video. Thanks so much!!!
I’m glad I was able to help you! Good luck with your other projects!
Thank you for posting your how to content. My wife wanted a peak addition and your video made it happen. Thanks for helping the do it yourself non-professional.
Currently 22 yrs old and got into framing when I was about 18, I run a small business and sub contract for gc’s. loved this video I had an idea but needed reassurance man you got yourself a new fan. Thank you so much.
Welcome to the channel! I made this channel to help others and to hear others ideas as well. Thanks for watching!
I really appreciate the video. It made it much easier to frame in a California this afternoon; I’m a bit rusty and missed a couple cuts, you saved the day
I’m glad I could help you. Good luck on the rest of your project
Thanks so much for this video!, building my own house and this helped a ton!! Thanks again for sharing your talents, it has blessed my life.!
Awesome refresher. I built a couple of these on mobile homes a few years back with my dad (he was a framer before I was born). But it's been 7-8 years since I have and he cant physically show me anymore. Wish I had paid more attention lol but just watching this video definitely rang some bells. Awesome work, looks good.
I did that..this past summer..it was a challenge..my first time doing it..but i managed to do it...i've worked as a carpenter..10 plus years...good information mister...ill learn more from this...good job
Thanks for this. As an apprentice carpenter, when cutting these rafters, I've been given all the measurements and angles by the journeymen, but no one explained where they get those angles from. You do a great job explaining why to use the angles and set back measurements.
You are AMAZING -- absolutely rock. Thank you for showing me how to add this valley -- you saved me a TON of time / money on my current project :)
You are welcome! I’m glad I could help you. That makes doing RUclips worth it to me. Good luck on all your projects!
Nothing hard to fix
This helped me so much with the degrees & pitch on a addition im doing now. Thx alot on ur video. Looking forward on watching other videos on house building. Stay safe.
Definitely one of the best instructiontional videos I've seen. This was the way I learned to build my own porch, first time ever building one! Couldn't have done it without this vidio, very thorough. Thanks!
Thanks for all the great video's,
I just built a roof over my existing front porch very similar to the one you built in the video.
With your help it turned out great.
I’m glad I could help you! Good to hear a fellow DIYers in a project turned out well. Good luck on your next project and thanks for watching!
WOW! you got that guy to help?!
Thank you for sharing, I am going to start tackling something very similar tomorrow on my own house. This video answered a lot of questions I had. You earned a new subscriber!
Thanks a lot for subscribing. I’m glad you enjoy my content. Lots to come!
FYI for anyone curious about the cuts on the top and bottom of the sleepers -- as an alternative to scribing, set your framing square to the roof pitch on the tongue, and the rafter length on the blade AKA body, and mark the top with the tongue and bottom with the blade. Top is square cut and bottom is set to the roof pitch. Its the same as the sheathing angle.
Amazing video my friend, thank you for taking the time to show us the right way to do it.
Thanks a lot John. I appreciate you watching. Glad you liked it!
This video encourages me to make a small roof with a valley on my future home. Thank you so much!
Good luck on your build! Thanks a lot for watching!
Great work, couldn't get my mind around bevel cut @ the valley jack at first. Then the penny dropped when I seen your excellent presentation.
Many thanks
Liam.

Not a lot of people take their time to show details like this because they and also me want to get it done and no time to mess around with cameras and editing and stuff. I’m always curious about building roofs and tying in old roofs because I want to build an additional one of these days. I did roofing for my entire house before by myself so i think I can tackle this myself. Thank you for sharing the infos. I’m subscribe and saved this video

You explained it very well nice and easy can't wait to try it
In general, it’s standard to oppose rafters when installed. Keeps them straight-ish
Amazing video. Great explanation for everything.
Glad you liked it! Stay tuned!!
I hope I got lucky like you when I build valley roof. Your video make me understand easy. Thanks
Love the video. You build more like I do than most videos I watch.
Actually, the best way to find what angle a pitch is is to look at your speed square. Set the square on the pitch and read the angle below.
Maybe we have the same teacher LOL. That’s good to know about the speed square. That is the best tool ever made! Good luck with everything!
i use my phone
I found your video after doing one of my own almost exactly the same here in the UK.👍 We must be brothers!!!🤩 Great job explaining this and not easy videoing at the same time.😎
Great minds think a like. I figured it was kind of common practice. Thanks a lot for watching!
@@TheExcellentLaborer Its so cool to see you do it the same.👍
That is cool!!
Awesome video man, very thorough and informative!
Thanks Greg! Stay tuned!
Finally someone has explained how to layout the frame work. I’ve watched a ton of videos and none have showed the hole process as you did. It’s my first time doing this. I plan on going over the shingles on the old roof. I trust this is acceptable. I’ve seen videos of it being done.
Im glad you found value in this video. Roof framing is hard work! Im glad you were willing to tackle it! Thanks for the comment!
I had my roof replaced as part of an insurance claim due to damage from a pretty wicked storm we had come through here in Oregon back in 2021. The contractor did indeed roof over roof to even up the ridge line as one of the additions came down to a “V” shaped valley of sorts behind the garage. Only problem is he didn’t continue the main attic for access, and no idea how he did it.
Other issue I discovered is that instead of putting the new underlayment and the ice/water barrier on after putting the plywood sheething on over the shiplap, he put the the underlayment and the ice/water barrier over the shiplap, then the plywood sheathing, then did the shingles directly to the plywood. So later today, their General Manager is sending out a different project manager who replaced the one that was fired to take a look and fix it under warranty. The one who did it originally bragged that he had over thirty years of experience as a roofing foreman. 😮
Wow man I really appreciate the content you put out I just joined a roofing crew and want to get myself up quick
Thanks man! I’m glad you like it.I remember when I first started working with a crew building houses, I would do anything to learn more. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the information my man you rock
You are welcome! Good luck with your project!
Great tutorial video 🙋♂️ thank you.
You are welcome. I’m glad I could help!
While I will never ve doing this, i really enjoy tbe videos.
Thanks Alex!
An easier way to find the degrees for the pitch of your roof is using the speed square, the marking for the pitch will have a corresponding degree mark at the bottom. Thanks for the video!
Yes check out my speed square video! I’ll show you how to do just that. Thanks a lot for watching!
Thank you you're very good
Great video! Thanks for all the detailed instruction. Very helpful! Look forward to future videos.
Thank you C! Upload a video once to twice a week. I’ll try to make them all very detailed. Thank you for stopping by!
