WOW 9 or 8 of my most favorite characters are all together in this race. Alex Kidd is being a show-off trying to beat you very hard and sort of making fun of others while racing, still I like him a little bit. that's so cool AiAi and MeeMee are together & Dr.Eggman and Metal Sonic together (wish they were in 2nd and 3rd place).
As someone who has not touched S Class in this game yet, from the looks of things, S Class just means faster rubber-banding. That's the only explanation I can think of for how ALEX KIDD of all characters could slip past you so quickly. It's ridiculous!
