  • Stupid Car Laws I Hate and wish didn't exist. Seriously, why is the Chicken Tax still around? Why even call it the Chicken tax at this point? Maybe when they revisit it, I hope they JUST REMOVE IT. I want smaller trucks in the US. Since automakers seem to dislike producing small cars, I wish I could turn to importing foreign trucks to the U.S. The best part? If enough of those cars enter our market, eventually American Auto Makers will have to address the competition and make one themselves...the Consumers should have the freedom of choice, the power to make companies compete. Not be blindly loyal to them, as they steal from your wallet. If you order a Meatball Sub, you better not be leaving with a Turkey White Bread. If I want a Small truck, i don't want to be presented a massive truck with the word "Compact" in front of it. Give me my Meatball Marinara you thieves!

    CAFE laws are another reason why small trucks don't exist. The MPG requirement for a small truck (or car for that matter) exceeds what is really feasible. This is why the Maverick is relatively huge for a "small truck" despite the base model being a hybrid. It's easier/cheaper to just design a vehicle to be bigger instead of one that is more fuel efficient.

      Exactly, was going to comment the same thing. It should be the opposite where it’s harder to build much larger trucks due to them having much stricter fuel economy regulations, and smaller vehicles having an easier time with fuel economy.

      What a stupid law. So companies go bigger to fit hybrid systems to pass a stupid standard set? If Small cars can exist, then small trucks should too. I betcha A V6 or 4cylinder in one can easily get 40MPG+ Even old pushrod trucks (fuel injected ones) could get 30MPG HWY.

      @@eduardoizquierdo309 The Santa Cruz is basically the same footprint as a maverick, It is slightly shorter, but it is also slightly wider. Also, CAFE standards do not necessarily prevent cars that don't meet the standards from being built, they just fine the manufacturers for doing so meaning the car will not be able to be priced competitively.

    The case of rural farmers replacing their light trucks with Kei trucks is 100% accurate. When I was growing up, everyone who needed stuff done had the smaller pickups or the larger bare-bones F150s and C1500s from the 80s and 90s. But since an import dealer opened up nearby, They mostly disappeared and been replaced by smaller Honda Acty type Vehicles. They're not bad vehicles, don't get me wrong, but like you and many others, I'd wish the automotive industry would build smaller pick ups once more and have exemptions by the CAFE.

As time has gone on, the required mpg of trucks has gone up very significantly, however this figure scales up based on the wheelbase. So for a old ranger styled small truck would NEED 50-60+ MPG to be legal. If I wasn't at work rn I would grab the magazine that I saw this in to get the name. If memory serves his system involved a heat-exchanger of sorts to better atomize the fuel with air/exhaust which allowed more of the fuel to be be burned by the engine instead of becoming exhaust, and then sold the patent to (insert brand here) car company but they never did anything with it.
      I know this is way off topic but its not an impossible task, they just don't want to R'n'D it, and I doubt they ever will. But it'd be cool to see it come back for small trucks!

    1:12 I’m no safety researcher, but I am a learning engineer, so I can attempt to make sense of it:
    Pop-up headlights are an extra mechanical part of the car, and thus They are their own module. The headlights themselves are very structurally solid, which means they don’t break down as easily in the event of a crash (though that’s not to say it’s impossible). And they would need to be too, as to not break down over thousands of pop-ups and pop-downs over its lifetime. A possible theory is that a solid structure such as that would interrupt the crumple zone of a car, and thus would keep it from being able to absorb all of the impact because something got lodged in there. Another theory is that the mechanism that makes the headlights pop up would increase the structural rigidity of the front end, and thus would decrease the effectiveness of the crumple zone yet again. There’s no quantifiable evidence of this, but given how pop-up headlights are built, it at least stands to reason. Though the other reason why pop-ups were phased out could have also been due to advances in LED technology, plus the extra complexity that comes from a pop-up vs a regular headlight making it no longer feasible to manufacture over a regular headlight. And not to mention the reduction in aerodynamic efficiency coming from the pop-up that’s all too important in modern cars. Even if the pop-up wasn’t covered in safety regulations, it would eventually be phased out naturally just for the aerodynamic benefit

    Bladed, i need to tell you about this: At least here in Mexico, PEOPLE ACTUALLY MADE POLITICIANS INCRASE CAR SAFETY.
    A little context. Up until 3 years ago, in Mexico was sold the "Nissan Tsuru". Which car it is you may ask...? *A FREAKING RENAMED B13 SENTRA, THE 90'S ONE.*
    Well, a few years back (about 2016 or 2017, i dont remind it clearly), the US IIHS released a video, "2016 Nissan Versa vs. 2015 Nissan Tsuru.", Bladed, that video, WENT VIRAL IN MEXICO. And people realized that the Tsuru somehow was *_25 YEARS BEING SOLD WITHOUT UPDATES_* (Nissan sold the Sentra from 1995 onwards, but kept the Tsuru name so people wont notice it.
    Obviously, it was a little death trap both inside and outside. That car made a lot of people think that modern cars are not safe, because that little and reliable econobox was so cheaped out, that its chassis metal sheets were about 2 mm thick, and im not joking, you can bend that metal with your hands with just a bit of force. People here usually say that, if you want to make that car safe, you absolutely must put a roll cage in it, so it doesnt collapse at crashes over 15 mph.
    After a lot of complaints both from mass public and media, and an independent research that discovered that over 4K people died in a Tsuru car crash in less than 8 years (2010-2018), _not counting before 2010_ , the Mexican government passed up a law in 2018 that forced car makers to, from beginning 2020 onwards, to improve (barely) car safety. And just last year, today's Mexico government passed up a law that will force car makers to match up USA/Canada car safety by 2025.
    Bladed, if Mexico could, you guys in US can too. Dont give up!

    I live in Europe and we’re starting to see more and more of these giant useless crossovers, SUV’s and trucks and it’s especially concerning because our roads and cities here are very tight (compared to the US). And especially in cities there’s a huge risk of kids running into the streets and not being seen early enough and not just kids… I am also a commercial driver and drive a big Nissan van and at least that thing’s hood curves downwards so I can actually see what’s in front of me. But something that I see every day because I mainly deliver in the heart of the city is that for some reason full grown adults also don’t seem to understand that just running into the streets without looking is really really dangerous! And that’s a big reason why I as a European think that it’s really important to make these cars saver for pedestrians, ESPECIALLY if we’re gonna have more of those here!
    Also we still have lots of station wagons here and they are awesome! It’s pretty much everything a SUV needs to be, cuz they sell these giant monsters as super practical because "it’s sooo big and you have sooo much trunk space!" but the way they build these things (mainly cuz of the all wheel drive system), they really don’t have that much space! I know lots of station wagons that have much more trunk space because they’re front wheel drive and it’s easier to see kids right in front of you because you’re not sitting as high up as an actual WORK VAN!

      Some Fantasy Concepts like the X-02 Wyvern has Swing-Wing Switchblade (They open in reverse) so maybe that?

    I saw a video about the SUV and Truck problem and I do agree with what is said about them. For example, If you got hit by a car or older SUV or Truck, due to the size, you more than likely lost your legs and slammed onto the hood with minimal injury. Nowadays, you get hit, your whole body slams into the hood and grill and you suffer major head injuries.

    So I usually agree with you on stuff but as a person who regularly uses there trucks for towing and work in the mid western portion of the us where almost everyone owns a 4x4 truck I can’t say I do this time. The idea of smaller trucks is a novelty, hell even a half ton is considered a small grocery getter around here. Mini trucks just don’t sell well and don’t tow or haul much so not many people buy them. I tow upwards of 25k with my diesel and regularly tow my race car with my half ton to events, anything less or smaller would be worth less to people who use there trucks to do work or haul things. But that’s from a blue collar class worker from the Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota region.

    That suv safety bit is so true.
    I work at an insurance auction and the amount of absolutely crumbled suvs I see come in is insane, Especially rollovers, saddest part whenever the previous owner comes to get any items they left in it 90% of the time they pull up in another (even bigger) Suv.
    And regarding the pedestrian safety I hate to say it but these people don't care. Everytime I mention that they don't have to get a giant suburban death trap or crew cab truck for their family and instead get a minivan or wagon I'm always met with "ItS NoNe Of yOuRE BuiSnEsS I BuY WhAtEvEr I WaNt, and I might just maybe, maybe once a year, possibly might pull a popup so I need a bus sized vehicle"
    There's no reasoning with them.

    On one of you points about smaller pickups, they will only have bigger beds IF they are single cab, personally, I think we should also start bringing back more single cabs and smaller trucks, more a variety will better improve the market, as to be fair, all of these trucks have their pluses and minuses. Not trying to discredit you, but just pointing out something you said.

      When you tell people that dual cabs are just a waste because they give up valuable tray space for seat they get upset because they want the clout or the perception they can do work and family when that platform was not designed for that, its one or the other. When you try to do both you might as well just skip the pretence and get a PPV like a Everest.

      @Startpanikin 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@mindfreeze0838 I wouldn't say that crew cabs are useless, I have a crew cab pickup and it is great for my needs, but I understand why it would in some people's cases that a single cab is better. We shouldn't be arguing crew cab OR single cab, we should just make both equally available to satisfy everyone.

    • @mindfreeze0838
      @mindfreeze0838 10 месяцев назад

      @@Startpanikin i get that, but when you walk into a showroom, youre not going to see the single cab, just the dual cabs, at least not in American showrooms. In other jurisdictions you can see the single cabs and in the case of Suzuki you can see their small pickup trucks and Vans alongside the family crossovers and MPV's.

    • @Startpanikin
      @Startpanikin 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@mindfreeze0838 exactly, we need companies in north america to diverse their cars and start advertising them, that's what I was trying to say with pickup earlier. I don't want to discredit you, I just want to say that we should look at old and new designs for inspiration and innovation, as both have their advantages and disadvantages, combining the best of both worlds would create something that will satisfy a lot of people. I completely get your point, I just believe that we shouldn't just cling to the past entirely, we should incorporate new designs and technology to improve it.
