@T D Drag races are bias towards AWD cars and FWD just can't compete, especially in the wet. In a rolling start (in the dry) the CTR would win. Check the Nürburgring times... the CTR is much quicker than the Yaris GR, it laps 12 seconds quicker...that's quite a difference but I still really like the Yaris GR, it's a cracking car.
@T D Roundabouts? What about corners? I mean it's horses for courses, if you rather a small nimble car then it's the Yaris obviously. If you rather a larger, more practical car then it's the Honda.
@@Monkiimagic As the commenter's previous point alludes to they're two different beasts that excel in their own areas. @@car-enthusiast3141 They actually aren ... there's information out there that supports what I am telling you. The companies do a lot to maintain their image of reliability but we have had 2 Toyota's and a Honda die in my family. An Acura TL from 2003 when they had weak transmissions, a 2008 RAV4 which through a rod and it turned out had an engine that was prone to having issues, and a 2006 Corolla which died even after taking it in multiple times. A brand does not make a car reliable, and this is why you have cars under each brand that are great and some that you should stay away from.
looks like Matt is thrashing the Type R because Honda factory is gone from England to Japan and that is why the test was on wet road so the FWD Honda looses to AWD Toyota, sorry Matt but I don't like manipulation
Love both cars but think Civic is a better buy to run daily. It’s larger and more practical, cheaper and I’d say faster in the dry. I would imagine if you were going to hold onto it though I think the residuals will be better on the Yaris given how unusual it is.

They are not identical cars my friend. Civic is in a higher class than Yaris, Civic is in the same class as the Corolla. The Yaris is in the same class as the Honda City. FYI

This is no test of these two , they are both about corners not drag races - but- 4WD is a big advantage in standing. starts and wet conditions. But despite the hype the regular model Type R is every bit as good to drive as the Yaris , a fabulous chassis, superb damping, gearchange, steering and brakes. Its also roomy and practical , much more so than the Yaris which is a toy by comparison. No reason to think the new FL1 Type R is not going to be at least as good , probably better so good luck Toyota - The Civic was the boss right to the end , AMG, VW, Renault, Cupra , Hyundai N, - all second best to the mighty Honda,
@@supernerdman55 I agree, but that's not the point: in a manual car, the driver has to be good, where as in an auto, it doesn't have to at all, he just needs to be able to floor a pedal. Also, paddles are just destroying the perfection of an auto gearbox.
Only in England is it acceptable to do a drag race comparison in the rain. Of course, if they actually waited for a sunny day, they'd only get off three races a year.
It’ll be interesting to see what the difference would be in the Honda’s preferred dry conditions. See if it’s power advantage makes much of a difference then.

You can't go wrong with both cars, but I'd still choose the Civic Type R, because it feels more race-like, and also very practical. Even though it's a sporty car, it's still a practical Honda Civic at the end of the day ~ And for the front-wheel drive, it actually did pretty good during the drag race and it kept up very well with the Yaris.
Yeah I have a GR Yaris coming next year and it being faster than a Type R Civic in the dry from a standing start is not going to happen, it also would have faired worse on the rolling starts as well since the AWD helped out with traction massively. I would be interested to see the pair of them go through a tight twisty course though.
And that's the honda value - you can win IF (insert a lot of condidions here). For a daily driving there is just too many if's - a lot of rainy days, snowy days, foggy and wet days and so on. If you want a fast and RELIABLE car get something with some kind of AWD or at least RWD (rwd would slip as much as FWD but at least you can have some fun with understeer).

So true. Top speed is totally irrelevant in real live (from someone who bought a new Impreza in 1999)
@T D In the wet maybe... in the dry the CTR would surprise you, even Chris Harris said the grip in the CTR was comparable to it's AWD rivals.
Either could trounce the other given the conditions so it depends on what you value. No doubt it'll suffer in the rolling races, being geared for rallying the final drive suffers and so it loses it's puff in higher speeds. Still impressive for what it is and how close it still was. It is a cracking car and so is the CTR, they're really top class.
I think on the track any circuit that can avail of performance in the 60-120+ range will cede advantage to higher powered rivals.
That said, one journo made a point on its 'off-the-line' party trick which is fun however you cut it with it's 0-30 being 1.48s. Faster than an Audi TT RS, Ferrari 488, Lambo Urus, Honda NSX, McLaren 570 and any model 3. I don't know the veracity of these claims since they're far-fetched, where the data is from and under what conditions. Do a dragrace with two identical cars but one of them with 5 passengers, intresting to see how much of a diffrence passengers make

Make it RWD and the parasitic losses saved would make a good part of that lol

That GR Yaris in black looks absolutely stunning. Great looking vehicle from Toyota.
