I'm just going to add in the fact that Edward named his dog Thatch later in his life. Honestly broke my heart realizing that Edward most likely saw Thatch die twice, his dear friend and his beloved pup just before he himself died in the templar assault.

He resisted together with his Albanian men againts the big Ottoman empire for 25 years, he won almost every battle except for 2, those 2 he lost was dou too treason If you have the brains and the balls then why not.
IRequiem greed is what drove them in life to achieve their goals for selfish purposes. Had they put the same effort towards more meaningful and just causes for the good of others, they would've been considered heroes rather than just pirates.

(best explanation ever) When Poor Thatch fell down, I started tearing up and shouted NOOOOOO!!! Then I went on a serious British killing spree with victims 300 soldiers including the crew of almost 40 ships. It took me 2 months to actually get over it and understand that it was only a game death. Rest in peace.

True. But this is the saddest game. Sadder than Assassin's Creed II. Heck, EVERYONE except Anne Bonny died and it's not like a relief either. Thatch was going to retire and wanted good for Nassau and died because of it. Mary Read's purpose was better than the Templar's and she died, so did Anne Bonny's baby. What I feel the most sad about is Edward. He just wanted money and ended up losing all his friends (except Anne Bonny) and even his wife died (I don't need to mention that his wife still loved him), etc. It was the saddest game I've played.

In this section, Kenway must’ve been feeling like absolute shit. Blackbeard gets killed right before his retirement, Rackham turns on him and he’s forced to kill Vane. And on top of that, he finds out that Hornigold betrayed him and Nassau
And then he was betrayed,locked up,and lost one of his last close friends, and it took this for him to realize where he fucked up😭😭(he didn't kill Vane btw)

One of the thing I LOVE about this game is the fact that everything that happens is true. 1. Thatch was killed at Ocracoke during an ambush. 2. Hornigold DID betray his pirate friends and became a Pirate Hunter. 3. Rackham actually mutinied to overthrow Vane. 4. Vane did go insane on Isla Providencia before being captured. 5. Read died in prison shortly after giving birth, while Anne managed to escape.
Seeing his friend’s head being lopped off fucked Edward up. I honestly think this point of the story should have waken him up more than Mary, but I understand why they chose it to be Mary

After Blackbeard died I went to the caverns and got shitfaced then went out and blew up any British ship I found. Didn't even take the loot. It wasn't about the money.
I'd say 2 is still a bit better. It had better villains at least and you somehow felt more connected with Ezio than with Edward, at least in my opinion.
Damn man, this is one of the moments where AC IV shines as AC III did in terms of story and emotion. When Blackbeard was shot in his face he continued... it was an awesome death... awesome, but too early.
Thatchs death was even more sad than Achilles' death. To me it seemed as if Edward looked towards Thatch as a father figure if not a mentor. Like if you agree.

When I played this scene for the first time, the Jackdaw was badly damaged and about to sink any second. So I needed to flee the battle as quick as possible. That, coupled with the fact that I couldn’t complete all the objectives of capturing the enemy Man-o-War, all added to the overwhelming sense of defeat and sadness of losing the most badass comrade and friend in the game. God, this game is fantastic.
This was one of the saddest deaths in assassins creed, but I feel as if Blackbeard was made LESS badass in the game. In real life, he was surrounded on all sided, he took 5 bullets and 20 swords until he went down, and just to make sure, they beheaded him. But here, he gets hit down by only 2 guards, and slashed once in the back by another. this was badass, but Blackbeard not only deserved a more badass death, but irl, he got one.
Several accounts portray Blackbeard as a non violent man, who used intimidation as opposed to violence in order to get his point across. By the time the cutscene of his death starts, I can imagine he's already been stabbed and shot a few times. Also he's 40+ years old. To even hold on that long after even one shot is a miracle on its own.
Which sucks because when you think about it, he still would've been alive if he hand shoulder-checked that guy with the gun. Instead of stabbing him and killing the dude, he pushed him to the ground, giving the guy the chance to shoot Thatch in the shoulder, initiating the several shots and stabs that lead to his death.
+Tao Biaf Blackbeard had so many rumors told about him. One of the rumors said that hew as known to fall in love very easily, and he had as many as 14 wives! In a way that kind of tells a part of his softer side.
I think what really hits home is how this doesn't just signal the end of arguably the most likeable pirate in the game, or even Kenway's friends falling, but the end of the Golden Age of Piracy. Nassau, the first attempt at real, true democracy in the New World becomes occupied by the British, the leading pirates of the age either being killed off or turning traitor...such a colourful period snuffed out by the powers that be.
I'm not saying anyone's a bad guy or a good guy. I think merely designating a real person or group of people as 'good guys' or 'bad guys' is evidence of a very ignorant and narrow mind. I simply believe that pirates were very grey, morally speaking, with Blackbeard being the best example - a man who committed crimes, but with a reluctance to do so. Many pirates were like that, as sailing and fighting were all that they knew. Many more were like Charles Vane, who were simply bullies lashing out at the world. There is no clear cut definition.
***** Did you know the *only* time Blackbeard was ever recorded to have killed was in the battle of his death? He would certainly *threaten* it, but people respected him and feared him, so it was more of a, "Continue playing nice and you live, start making trouble and you die." He probably would have kept to his honor and his word, but he did not ever have to. Like I said, the only record of him ever killing was his final battle, which only happened because Governor Charles Eden tempted him back into piracy and gave him the Adventure, which caused Alexander Spotswood to hire Robert Maynard to hunt him. Blackbeard was going to retire, then Maynard hunted him down and attacked. Blackbeard defended himself by killing plenty of Maynard's men, but after sustaining 20 cuts and 5 shots, he was *just* about to kill Maynard when a random soldier cut his neck, distracting him long enough for a second slice to sever his head.
Have you read up how he actually died? It's astounding, I've collected about what I could piece together from various sites and accounts, not all are well credited but the fact of how many wounds he had is even across the board and that he had a large neck wound early on: During what is believed to be Thatch's retirement party that lasted several days as he prepared to put down the black flag for good, he was finally hunted down by the English, and he put up a full fight worthy of his name as he was cornered near his favorite hideout, "Thatch's Hole," on the island of Ocracoke in North Carolina. He had not put up a lookout as he had little expectation of an attack with almost his entire crew drunk. Upon spotting the two English sloops approaching he quickly unleashed his sloop, the Adventurer, into action, firing off its ten cannons into one of the two British ships, instantly disabling it and killing twenty men including the commander. The other appeared to only have a skeleton crew and thus he boarded with fourteen men. However, this was soon to be discovered as a trap when from below deck sprung an overwhelming number of sixty crew. Vastly outnumbered three to one with having only been celebrating with a small crew of twenty-five men at best against the British and Highland troops, he went down fighting to the end. Even with so many against him he fought fiercely and mercilessly, appearing as "a demon fresh from the pit" engaging in combat with the lieutenant that captained the ship, Maynard. The final fight of Blackbeard was said to be spectacular and long, Thatch first being wounded by a gunshot from Maynard as he initially engaged while he pulled his own trigger but the flintlock misfired. Blackbeard staggered back at the hit but he quickly charged forth, with a single powerful swing he broke the lieutenant's blade near the hilt with his thick cutlass, knocked down and about to be run-through Maynard was only saved when two of his crew simultaneously engaged Thatch as he was shot in the back while another struck his neck from the side, forcing the pirate's death blow to miss, barely, lodging in the knuckles of the lieutenant before he was forced to engage the crew swarming him while one of Maynard's own crew tackled him away. Even as large amounts of blood gushed from his neck it only seemed to make Thatch more determined and deadly as even this still failed to stop Blackbeard as he continued to fight to the bitter end with incredible strength and ferocity, there is a gap of the account as he was broke away from Maynard but what is known is that in his final moments he had propped himself up with twenty cuts across his body, with several around his neck, and at least four bullet wounds, lying beside the railing as he forced himself up with his elbow, his flintlock raised with a swaying, blood-covered hand with his eyes and face drenched in his own blood and the blood of others, he slowly aimed at the lieutenant, but his elbow gave out and he slammed into the floor. Thatch, with so many wounds, still sprung up from the ground, fearsome and deadly with sword and flintlock in hand, staggering slightly and his head nodding downward, before being shot a fifth and final time. The massive pirate king swayed for a few moments, then collapsed and toppled to the side, lying still for a moment, rolling over, and then lying still again. For good measure his head was removed as it was the only way Maynard felt the pirate king wouldn't return from the dead and he could collect his bounty. Blackbeard's known reign lasted less than two years, in that time he plundered what is believed to be a little over forty ships, however, the tactics he used to deliberately create terror and forge his legend left an immortalized image, and his undying soul and determination would see him rise again.
Blackbeard and Kidd hit me right in the feels :'( It was also sad to see that jolly guy go off on his own adventure and how he thanked Edward for being his inspiration and friend. :(
I love the soundtrack when you're escaping, and it's so emotionally powerful how you see the other pirate ships sinking, and how the sounds of cannons and men shouting are all kind of faded into the background. That scene was a masterpiece!

You only saw him fall on the ground, I suppose the English took his body and beheaded him later to strike fear. They still kept it historical accurate.
And as if good ol' Blackbeard wasn't badass enough, there are actually stories that say his headless body swam three times around the ship, before climbing back on to continue fighting. Other stories say the body just swam around the ship before sinking to the ocean's depths. Whatever story you choose, they all show how badass Blackbeard was.

This mission was so well pulled off imo. It really showed how the golden age of piracy was coming to an end, that the pirates were being overwhelmed. And the music really made it all imo.
You don't understand this isn't just fiction these pirates were sons of the King's court and were hunted down because of their part in the war. Therefore they became the legendary pirates they were known as. They were no thieves they were revolutionaries. Think twice and do research before you get so snarky.
It's so sad to see Edward struggle to keep him alive, and then fail. He was trying so hard. And then "THATCH" and some death. And the best position music ever.

Eh, I think Edward's vengefulness depended on our reaction as the players. Sure, story wise I agree he needed to be more vengeful, but when it came to how I reacted, Edward never let a British ship get by without being blown to bits, as per my behalf.
Who would he have had vengence on? The ambush was an act of the British not the Templars. Kenway must've know he would have been no match for the entire empire had he gone on a crusade of revenge. Plus Ubisoft is bound by history, and from what I know the people involved with the ambush live long after that.

Wow Desmond's got a crazy family tree. Ezio was best friends with Davinci and Edward with fucking Blackbeard, Connors just perfected that line with our founding fathers.
I like that it isn't some generic cliche reaction. Edward didn't suddenly get a burst of adrenaline seeing Blackbeard die and killed every single soldier on the ship, then walked over to his corpse, say some sad speech etc. Edward was in so much shock, couldn't even see the guy knocking him off, could barely speak and was struggling alot against the soldiers. And ultimately in the end, couldn't even bury him.
Just imagine Edward's retaliation shot like a cutscene, with the sad music playing in the background, no other sound effects, Kenway screaming with rage as the cannons tear apart the British ships, the pirates boarding the last man-o-war and slaughtering all the redcoats, the Jackdaw sailing away with the wreckage in the background, then maybe a pan over all the pirates sobbing over their loss, and a single tear goes down Edward's cheek as he stares ahead in pain and fury
Thatch and Mary. Broke my heart to see them die. I loved Blackbeard in particular, he felt like a full character. He has some of my favourite dialogue ever. He is funny, grandiose, scary, epic and friendly.

He's a pirate who is SO good at what he does that his very presence terrifies those around him... but all that he honestly wants is to get out of the business and to live a relatively quiet, peaceful life with what he's got now. Then, due to unfortunate circumstance, he dies fighting for the lives of his men and of his friends.
During the cutscene at the end of the Siege of Charles Town mission,and this one "Do Not Go Gently" along with the dialogue exchanges you see a really endearing father & son relationship between Edward & Teach / Thatch.
I was so mad at Thatch's death I tried to take out all the ships in the area rather than escape, wasn't long before I realized that at least two of the ships were not losing any health, that's despite the Jackdaw's hull, ram, broadside cannons and swivel gun's upgraded to elite, was made to feel worse because I had to escape leaving those ships go on their merry way, I hate plot armor!
I went on a rampage after I escaped. Sank 3 man o wars, 8 frigates, 4 schooners and a handful of gunboats. Left no crew alive, sent the ships to the bottom. And that's not enough. I also took two forts. RIP Edward Thatch.
That's literally my kitchen name. I work at a restaurant, and we all have clever "kitchen names." One of the pretty girls has the name "Tossed Salad", the head cook has "Killer Cookie" and I have Black-Bread because of one time when I almost burned bread because I was busy talking to Tossed Salad.
The Assassin's Creed franchise is so brilliant. I was so sad/angry when Blackbeard died, that as soon as I got back onto the Jackdaw, I just laid waste to the rest of the entire fucking fleet.. I don't even know why I did that. It's just a video game, right? Well people ask me why I love video games so much, but the answer is so obvious: You simply cannot get the same experience and emotions when reading a novel or watching a movie. Video games bring you to a level of depth that nothing else ever can.

Heck, EVERYONE except Anne Bonny died and it's not like a relief either. Thatch was going to retire and wanted good for Nassau and died because of it. Mary Read's purpose was better than the Templar's and she died, so did Anne Bonny's baby. What I feel the most sad about is Edward. He just wanted money and ended up losing all his friends (except Anne Bonny) and even his wife died (I don't need to mention that his wife still loved him), etc.

In this section, Kenway must’ve been feeling like absolute shit. Blackbeard gets killed right before his retirement, Rackham turns on him and he’s forced to kill Vane. And on top of that, he finds out that Hornigold betrayed him and Nassau

1. Thatch was killed at Ocracoke during an ambush.
2. Hornigold DID betray his pirate friends and became a Pirate Hunter.

4. Vane did go insane on Isla Providencia before being captured.
5. Read died in prison shortly after giving birth, while Anne managed to escape.

Blackbeard wanted to die as a retired captain, tucked away in his final vacation. Instead, his opportunity to finally rest his life away was taken by England, and he died as a valiant Pirate, still swinging his sword in the name of freedom.
May he rest in peace, and may the memories we all shared in following his and Edward's adventures live on forever.

After Blackbeard died I went to the caverns and got shitfaced then went out and blew up any British ship I found. Didn't even take the loot. It wasn't about the money.

When I played this scene for the first time, the Jackdaw was badly damaged and about to sink any second.
So I needed to flee the battle as quick as possible.
That, coupled with the fact that I couldn’t complete all the objectives of capturing the enemy Man-o-War, all added to the overwhelming sense of defeat and sadness of losing the most badass comrade and friend in the game.
God, this game is fantastic.

This was one of the saddest deaths in assassins creed, but I feel as if Blackbeard was made LESS badass in the game. In real life, he was surrounded on all sided, he took 5 bullets and 20 swords until he went down, and just to make sure, they beheaded him. But here, he gets hit down by only 2 guards, and slashed once in the back by another. this was badass, but Blackbeard not only deserved a more badass death, but irl, he got one.
Several accounts portray Blackbeard as a non violent man, who used intimidation as opposed to violence in order to get his point across. By the time the cutscene of his death starts, I can imagine he's already been stabbed and shot a few times. Also he's 40+ years old. To even hold on that long after even one shot is a miracle on its own.
Which sucks because when you think about it, he still would've been alive if he hand shoulder-checked that guy with the gun. Instead of stabbing him and killing the dude, he pushed him to the ground, giving the guy the chance to shoot Thatch in the shoulder, initiating the several shots and stabs that lead to his death.
+Tao Biaf Blackbeard had so many rumors told about him. One of the rumors said that hew as known to fall in love very easily, and he had as many as 14 wives! In a way that kind of tells a part of his softer side.
That slash in the back was him being decapitated, the falling hat showed it, only, AC isn't Skyrim, so they didn't show the full decapitation.

I think what really hits home is how this doesn't just signal the end of arguably the most likeable pirate in the game, or even Kenway's friends falling, but the end of the Golden Age of Piracy. Nassau, the first attempt at real, true democracy in the New World becomes occupied by the British, the leading pirates of the age either being killed off or turning traitor...such a colourful period snuffed out by the powers that be.
I'm not saying anyone's a bad guy or a good guy. I think merely designating a real person or group of people as 'good guys' or 'bad guys' is evidence of a very ignorant and narrow mind. I simply believe that pirates were very grey, morally speaking, with Blackbeard being the best example - a man who committed crimes, but with a reluctance to do so. Many pirates were like that, as sailing and fighting were all that they knew. Many more were like Charles Vane, who were simply bullies lashing out at the world. There is no clear cut definition.

Did you know the *only* time Blackbeard was ever recorded to have killed was in the battle of his death? He would certainly *threaten* it, but people respected him and feared him, so it was more of a, "Continue playing nice and you live, start making trouble and you die." He probably would have kept to his honor and his word, but he did not ever have to. Like I said, the only record of him ever killing was his final battle, which only happened because Governor Charles Eden tempted him back into piracy and gave him the Adventure, which caused Alexander Spotswood to hire Robert Maynard to hunt him. Blackbeard was going to retire, then Maynard hunted him down and attacked. Blackbeard defended himself by killing plenty of Maynard's men, but after sustaining 20 cuts and 5 shots, he was *just* about to kill Maynard when a random soldier cut his neck, distracting him long enough for a second slice to sever his head.

Have you read up how he actually died? It's astounding, I've collected about what I could piece together from various sites and accounts, not all are well credited but the fact of how many wounds he had is even across the board and that he had a large neck wound early on:
During what is believed to be Thatch's retirement party that lasted several days as he prepared to put down the black flag for good, he was finally hunted down by the English, and he put up a full fight worthy of his name as he was cornered near his favorite hideout, "Thatch's Hole," on the island of Ocracoke in North Carolina. He had not put up a lookout as he had little expectation of an attack with almost his entire crew drunk. Upon spotting the two English sloops approaching he quickly unleashed his sloop, the Adventurer, into action, firing off its ten cannons into one of the two British ships, instantly disabling it and killing twenty men including the commander. The other appeared to only have a skeleton crew and thus he boarded with fourteen men. However, this was soon to be discovered as a trap when from below deck sprung an overwhelming number of sixty crew. Vastly outnumbered three to one with having only been celebrating with a small crew of twenty-five men at best against the British and Highland troops, he went down fighting to the end. Even with so many against him he fought fiercely and mercilessly, appearing as "a demon fresh from the pit" engaging in combat with the lieutenant that captained the ship, Maynard. The final fight of Blackbeard was said to be spectacular and long, Thatch first being wounded by a gunshot from Maynard as he initially engaged while he pulled his own trigger but the flintlock misfired. Blackbeard staggered back at the hit but he quickly charged forth, with a single powerful swing he broke the lieutenant's blade near the hilt with his thick cutlass, knocked down and about to be run-through Maynard was only saved when two of his crew simultaneously engaged Thatch as he was shot in the back while another struck his neck from the side, forcing the pirate's death blow to miss, barely, lodging in the knuckles of the lieutenant before he was forced to engage the crew swarming him while one of Maynard's own crew tackled him away. Even as large amounts of blood gushed from his neck it only seemed to make Thatch more determined and deadly as even this still failed to stop Blackbeard as he continued to fight to the bitter end with incredible strength and ferocity, there is a gap of the account as he was broke away from Maynard but what is known is that in his final moments he had propped himself up with twenty cuts across his body, with several around his neck, and at least four bullet wounds, lying beside the railing as he forced himself up with his elbow, his flintlock raised with a swaying, blood-covered hand with his eyes and face drenched in his own blood and the blood of others, he slowly aimed at the lieutenant, but his elbow gave out and he slammed into the floor. Thatch, with so many wounds, still sprung up from the ground, fearsome and deadly with sword and flintlock in hand, staggering slightly and his head nodding downward, before being shot a fifth and final time. The massive pirate king swayed for a few moments, then collapsed and toppled to the side, lying still for a moment, rolling over, and then lying still again. For good measure his head was removed as it was the only way Maynard felt the pirate king wouldn't return from the dead and he could collect his bounty. Blackbeard's known reign lasted less than two years, in that time he plundered what is believed to be a little over forty ships, however, the tactics he used to deliberately create terror and forge his legend left an immortalized image, and his undying soul and determination would see him rise again.
And thus this day Ed Thatch coined the phrase "come at me bro".

I love the soundtrack when you're escaping, and it's so emotionally powerful how you see the other pirate ships sinking, and how the sounds of cannons and men shouting are all kind of faded into the background. That scene was a masterpiece!

This mission was so well pulled off imo. It really showed how the golden age of piracy was coming to an end, that the pirates were being overwhelmed. And the music really made it all imo.

Eh, I think Edward's vengefulness depended on our reaction as the players. Sure, story wise I agree he needed to be more vengeful, but when it came to how I reacted, Edward never let a British ship get by without being blown to bits, as per my behalf.
Who would he have had vengence on? The ambush was an act of the British not the Templars. Kenway must've know he would have been no match for the entire empire had he gone on a crusade of revenge. Plus Ubisoft is bound by history, and from what I know the people involved with the ambush live long after that.

I like that it isn't some generic cliche reaction.
Edward didn't suddenly get a burst of adrenaline seeing Blackbeard die and killed every single soldier on the ship, then walked over to his corpse, say some sad speech etc.
Edward was in so much shock, couldn't even see the guy knocking him off, could barely speak and was struggling alot against the soldiers.
And ultimately in the end, couldn't even bury him.
That’s why I love this game, the characters feel authentic and real.
Just imagine Edward's retaliation shot like a cutscene, with the sad music playing in the background, no other sound effects, Kenway screaming with rage as the cannons tear apart the British ships, the pirates boarding the last man-o-war and slaughtering all the redcoats, the Jackdaw sailing away with the wreckage in the background, then maybe a pan over all the pirates sobbing over their loss, and a single tear goes down Edward's cheek as he stares ahead in pain and fury
That moment you realize Assassin's Creed 4 was really a buddy-cop film the whole time

I loved Blackbeard in particular, he felt like a full character. He has some of my favourite dialogue ever.
He is funny, grandiose, scary, epic and friendly.
Funny thing I didn't click or even watched this. I searched Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag. And scrolled down a little bit and saw the title. I knew blackbeard died IRL but I didn't know blackbeard would die ingame. But yeah at least I don't know how he dies.
Judging by the outpouring of grief for the fallen Blackbeard, I'm going to guess the game does an excellent job of characterising him.
Sadly it doesnt, blackbeard has like 5 cutscenes hes in. But the music made u kind of feel.... a bit.

He's a pirate who is SO good at what he does that his very presence terrifies those around him... but all that he honestly wants is to get out of the business and to live a relatively quiet, peaceful life with what he's got now. Then, due to unfortunate circumstance, he dies fighting for the lives of his men and of his friends.

During the cutscene at the end of the Siege of Charles Town mission,and this one "Do Not Go Gently" along with the dialogue exchanges you see a really endearing father & son relationship between Edward & Teach / Thatch.
I was so mad at Thatch's death I tried to take out all the ships in the area rather than escape, wasn't long before I realized that at least two of the ships were not losing any health, that's despite the Jackdaw's hull, ram, broadside cannons and swivel gun's upgraded to elite, was made to feel worse because I had to escape leaving those ships go on their merry way, I hate plot armor!
I went on a rampage after I escaped. Sank 3 man o wars, 8 frigates, 4 schooners and a handful of gunboats. Left no crew alive, sent the ships to the bottom.
And that's not enough. I also took two forts.
RIP Edward Thatch.
I upgraded my ship and captured all the forts. Also, destroyed ANY man'o war, frigate and brig at sight for a few days.

I'm aware of Blackbeard's execution, but in no means was I expecting it to be shown in this game. Someone should really change the title
The Assassin's Creed franchise is so brilliant. I was so sad/angry when Blackbeard died, that as soon as I got back onto the Jackdaw, I just laid waste to the rest of the entire fucking fleet.. I don't even know why I did that. It's just a video game, right? Well people ask me why I love video games so much, but the answer is so obvious: You simply cannot get the same experience and emotions when reading a novel or watching a movie. Video games bring you to a level of depth that nothing else ever can.
