this is not funny, but at the same time, I'm not sure how i feel about these videos. what we really should be doing (especially what police should be doing) is telling business owners and non-cyclists that they should let bicyclists bring their children INDOORS with them! bicycles should not be left unattended and its infuriating when store employees tell me to 'leave it outside'. they just have no clue, so education is key.
The purpose of a good lock isn't to prevent people from taking the bike. It's to make it difficult enough that they'll consider stealing the bike next to it instead.
Known ways how to effectively secure your bike from all thieves: - Buy a second bike, give it to an armed security guard you employ. Let him follow you and guard your bike. - If you're short on money, have an huge attack dog chained next to it, at all times. - Don't use your bike. Ever. Just walk. - Keep it in the vault of a bank. - Coat your bike in fast-acting poison. - Become a thief and steal bikes from others. - Lit your bike on fire. - Buy the Emperors new Bike. Just pretend that you have a bike. Try to mimic bike motions when you ride it. - Move to a place without thieves, like antarctica. - Use a bike made of pure lead. If it's to heavy to ride, it's to heavy to steal. - Weld your bike onto heavy objects. Most thieves carry only grinders, not a welder. - Get a thief, ride the thief. Bikes don't steal thieves. - Become a gangster. Learn the way of the street. Take over crime organisations. Avange your stolen bike, by sending assasins. - Join military. Go to war. Return home. Join the police. Quit job. Avange your stolen bike, by becoming bitter war veteran. - Go to Japan. Join ninja village. Learn the ways of the ninja. Return home. Avange stolen bike, by becoming assasin. - Turn in to Transformer. Transform into bike when you need it. Turn back to human when you don't. If you follow those steps, you should be safe.
ROFLLMAO! :D the best ever comment I have read on bike security ... ever :D xD I like the poison option! :D Oh, +1 to the list! Coat your bike with plutonium, police/army can track the route of the plutonium "footprints" :D
I was in the local library about 15 years ago, on the magazine rack there was a mag from the CTC (Cyclists Touring Club) UK. It had a test of "expensive bike locks" with which to lock your costly touring bike (such as a Dawes Galaxy). I remember very clearly that the U-Locks were broken during testing with a vehicle bottle jack, which is much smaller and easier to carry around than an angle grinder or a pair of bolt croppers.
Which is why you need to fill up the space of a u lock with the bike and what you are lockimg too. Don't go for the longer ones unless you are locking up 2 bikes.
Come on guys... This is one of the best demonstations for your "security", that any retailer with 100 dollors lock is trying to sell you. Dont be stupid and leave your 2000 dollar bike over night in the city. And lockpicking is someties even faster and more sneaky. Take care of your bike and dont be stupid!!! Great video.
this is the most realistic bike lock test ive seen. most have experts masterfully picking the locks. bike thieves use brute force. ive had to cut ulocks in public with hack saws twice because ive lost the key. im muscular and gruff looking. the first time, nobody said anything. second time a fellow jokingly as if i lost my key. i said yes and he walked away. i think people should at least take a picture or ask to see ID if there is a later reporting of a theft.
I live in the United States. Best advice : lock it in view of cameras, look into bicycle alarms and or hook it to equipment. I usually lock my bicycle close to propane tanks if I’m grocery shopping or in absence of that I will lock it to a rack (4 locks).
Fill the lock with corundum n stuff. That's what is used for safes. It gives thieves a hard time. Some fill materials throw fire when cut, to injure the thief. However the lock size would be unpractical and expensive.
a hollow core sufficient enough to gum up a grinder would weaken the strength of the shackle, making it more susceptible to bolt cutters. they use angle grinders, but not often enough to warrant the design feature. snips and bolt cutters are the majority of tools used.
Instead of adding more locks, they should make easy detachable handlebars that you can take with you. This stop thieves riding off. Also steering lock is useful.
Every seller of a 2nd hand bike should be obliged to prove it is not stolen. This should be possible by adding a small amount to the purchase price for which is gets registered the rest of its life with the history of different owners.
Best protection is not exposing your bike, try to take it with you as much as you can, for this, investing in a smaller bike can usually ease the process...
Whether you commute on a cheap bike or not, if someone seriously needs a bike for transportation, they will still want to steal. In my opinion, instead of getting a very expensive Bike U Lock, you may consider getting a cheap and good quality Bike U Lock and this way, your pocket wont have a big hole and you still can prevent your bike from being stolen. I can share this Bike U lock which i bought which is super strong ,sturdy and made of extremely tough material . Check it out at this link: www.amazon.com/dp/B0936TQ8MC . Hope it helps. :-)
This is a good observation. The solution is to park it under cover in a secure location. Plus, we can honeypot the bike thieves and have public burnings. Good fun.
well, the thief's advice at the end of the video is not bad. Just use 2 proper locks, and when hiplok's d1000 comes out, it's really giving the thief a challenge. Super rare to see a thief with a proper corded angle grinder on the street.
Glad mine took the longest Not so happy it was still only just over 1 min Last week my mate had his D lock cut in public - someone asked the thief why he was cutting the lock, and the thief said "my girlfriend lost her key" and he was off with the bike.

More thieves probably carry the smaller of the two bolt cutters so I'd still care to know what locks resisted those even if they succumbed to the large pair. Some resist both and yes, sure if you have an expensive bike get one of those. Some security chains do resist most bolt cutters or certainly the smaller ones. Its about the metal used and its shape like having square shaped links or polygonal. Pewag being an example and ABUS as well. Bigger links are more secure but weigh a lot! Some locks are still vulnerable to prying attacks with crow bars and hammer blows. The more expensive locks do well though. There are less than a half dozen U or D style locks that resist grinder attacks but they do cost more. One has to look into it. One has to weigh the costs and benefits. Cost in weight and money or should I say pounds and pounds? Its not about being invulnerable its about being a bother.
I have a New York Noose chain and a Kryptonite lock. I see the lock took the longest time. Hopefully it will be enough of a deterrent to move on to a less stout lock and chain. Grinding in public does draw attention.
A level headed thief will have a story prepared on how the lock broke down or something and the u-lock needs to be cut. And stuff like that do happen. I was close to face it myself. My medium quality Kryptonite jammed. Luckily when it was not locked on a bike. If it was, well - hello angle grinder :D
Most bike locks are ridiculously easy to pick or bypass. No boilt cutters or angle grinder needed. Don't leave your good bike unattended! And get a cheap daily built on a discarded frame you got for free at the co-op. I built a realy cheap SS bike to go for groceries with. It even has some holes in the seatstays, total value of parts perhaps 50$ (tires and tubes cost 20$ or it would have been cheaper). I lock it, but don't care much if they steal it. It is also the one bike I can leave in the cellar overnight.
Hi guys. I have a question that needs answering and the more opinions I have the clearer my mind will be. I went to the shops today and I used a Kryptonite and a magnum lock (both U-locks) I U-locked on both my wheels and frame. I used the strong cable (Both came with U-locks) to secure my seat, rack and basket. It’s my first time leaving my bike at a supermarket bike rack so I was rushing as fast as I could. Not even 2 minutes inside the shop, self doubt started to kick in and my brain was starting to nag and say things like I didn’t attach the lock to the post. ( you know the most important thing) I ran out the shop and was relieved to see it still there and attached to the post but I looked up to see some guy STARRING at my bike. 😮 I kind of ‘rudely asked if he’s alright. He jumped and asked if the bike was mine. I said yes. He said he was admiring it and then left. I was stood there for about 2 mins scratching my head. I went to get my shopping. My question is do you guys think he was ‘admiring’ my bike or do you think he was about to pinch it?! He just looked like your average guy. Pls help because it’s my first time locking up my bike in public and it scared me! I know I locked it up with top quality locks and I made sure EVERYTHING was locked. How long do you guys lock your bikes? I only left for 2 mins! I’m glad I trusted my intuition! Pls help and give your opinions because I’m contemplating not leaving my bike anywhere other than my house.
He was selecting your bike. There is no way to protect a bike that has been selected. They want your one, they will get that one. Buy a crappy old piece of rubbish for daily driving, and never ever leave the good one unattended outside.
Peter Kroll Thanks for the reply and Yes I did get that impression when looking at him. My bike is brand new! I’m really protective of it and I bought it to go to work on but my trip to the shop the other day scared me. If I didn’t use my intuition I would have lost it. 🚲 ☹️ kinda sad. Not only that but bikes and locks are expensive. It’s so annoying. The guy in vid broke my U-lock in 38s! With a power tool! Your right! Thanks again. I think I will use your advice. 😊
@@sandramcnamara9057 I am so sad to say this. When I was a child I left my bike outside over night, dumped it anywhere near my house where I was at that moment. Coming back next morning it was still there. I got never anything stolen. Sounds like these old folks saying everything was better back then, right? A few years back my friend's bike was stolen OUT OF HIS LOCKED GARAGE! He had ankored it to a hook at the wall. They took a battery operated grinder, obviously cut the hardened steel chain open. It was brand new, just like yours. The remainders of the chain were laying on the floor, the bike gone. Opening the lock of the garage door was obviously not hard, and the cutting of the chain may have taken them less than a minute. Obviously they had aimed at this particular bike. You may spend hundrets on locks, but I think it will only prevent trespassers from riding away.
Peter Kroll it’s really sad and the police don’t really seem to care. I just read a local newspaper article and some poor guy got his motorbike stolen and it was pretty much where I parked my bike. I’m so saddened to hear someone broke into your friends garage. It’s not only the bike but it feels like an invasion of privacy as well. My mum said the same. She said she used to just leave her bike anywhere and it’ll be there after hours. I’m going to keep getting the bus to work and save up for a car. ( I passed my test! ) I’ll use the bike for exercise. I was going to use it for work but if it gets pinched it would be cheaper to get the bus than it would be lose an expensive bike. At least I would be the one getting the benefit of the bus fair right? Thanks again. 😊
I have the opposite problem. I have snapped the key off in my D lock and now I cannot get it off and my bike is stuck! I was wondering if the fire brigade would cut it off for a small fee?
It's all irrelevant. If they want your bike bad enough, they'll just cut the frame and wheel off and take it for the remaining parts. In fact the frame is much faster to cut with a sawzall than the better U-Locks are with a grinder. If you really want the best advice, then get a less expensive used bike and instead of an expensive lock, put away the money saved to buy yourself a replacement bike. Also park next to a nicer bike, in a well traveled area in short sight of the street, then which is the thief looking to take?
Literally. All packed in nice batteries. Pretty much nothing they can't cut through. There is a really fat lock that basically wears out batteries, and ruins discs, but it's nit really practical
Pewdiepie p I bought a universe that contains many galaxies which contain many globular cluster inside a nebula inside a planetary nebula which contains a solar systems with various planets which contains a country in a continent that has various houses in which i use to secure my car which i use to lock by bike.
At the begining there were a couple of very cheap cable locks (not worth mentioning) and after that (in order of appearance): - Tekmun U-Shaped Bike Lock - OnGuard Beast Chain 8016L - Master Lock 8196EURDPRO - Knog Strongman - Master Lock 8238EURDPRO - OnGuard Brute LS #8000 - Abus Granit X-Plus 540 - Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Mini
Lock companies don't want to have their locks shown being broken into in under a minute. It looks bad for them and gives them grounds to sue. Even if they won't win, its still not worth the legal headache if a lock company wishes to pursue legal action
The number one problem in bike theft is not an inadequate lock but an inadequate legal system that favor the thief and deters the public from getting involved . Most people will walk right by a thief using a loud angle grinder because they are afraid of being attacked or a law suit by the perp. place bicycle theft in the same category as car theft and you will see the police getting involved and alter the laws so that if the owner of the bike or a member of the public intervenes , they cannot be sued by the thief no matter how severe their injuries form the beating that they deserve.
Was going to make a similar comment , the reality is most bike locking places use cheap shitty china special steal that is as strong as play doe and as i have seen you are more likely to see the cheap shitty steal locking stations cut than the actual bike lock its self, like a friend they had the bike nicked and the scumbag gut through the lock rail in under 30 seconds with a hand hack saw and then stole the bike and the lock, it really is evidence to the fact that we really need lethal locks, before i get people shouting at me, there really is a reason why places with the death penalty for thefts have the lowest theft crime rate on the planet....
On the subject of being challenged: a couple of years ago some twit accidentally locked my bike, along with his, to a stand. I went home by bus, gave it a couple of hours and then came back with a few hand tools to remove his lock (a cheap chain and padlock which I could see wasn't going to put up much of a fight). It took me I suppose 5 or 10 minutes, during which time plenty of people walked past - this was in central London, very near Wellington Barracks in Westminster. A couple of people gave me a slightly funny look but no one said anything. The more blatant you are, the less likely to get challenged. The irony was that the twit responsible turned up just as I was about to impart the final hacksaw stroke. He was suitably mortified and we parted with a laugh.
Bike thieves trade on the fact that most people will not report the theft in progress, let alone intervene. That's down to fear, anomie, diffusion of responsibility, and urban callousness.
I rather doubt there is a seamless system for collecting and reviewing the camera footage. Easy to imagine an hour plus to request and obtain each video used in tracking the thief. Perhaps as AI develops, a better system for accessing and reviewing camera feeds will also improve and handle all the tracking without man hours spent on it. I've heard China has some pretty good tech going for tracking people... There were stories about it being used to catch Covid quarantine breakers. More than just cameras could be used though. You can bet most thieves are going to have cellphones with them. Cellphone company and other providers like google that have location tracking services on the phones can probably identify everyone in the area and their moves before and after any specific events. if they aren't doing it already, the data is available for one of those futuristic automated contact tracing systems. Track the thieves to the shops / buyers they work with and follow the flow back out to all the other thieves and map the whole network of people involved. Google already does that with targeted advertisements. You'll get ads based on the people you associate with.
Yeah but someone I knew with a £1200 bike had an unsuccessful thief right out their workplace because a coworker could hear the angle grinder and see the thief out the window, and stopped them 😅
Yeah, that's how it is. You gotta be grateful for the people who uses crappy locks so it's always easier for thieves to take those and not spend minutes working on yours.
Never under estimate the stupidity of a smackhead, £1000 £300 they will sell it for £20 for their next fix. they just want to be away with it as quick as they can.
FOL haha same but don't worry, just lock it well, make sure that your wheels is secure too, and remember to lock it in a public area, and you should be fine i guess.
I have a small theft recovery system with a hidden chip inside the frame...I've accompanied police twice to recover my bike. First place, at a home 2 blocks away. Second, a shipping container near the port. We had to pull out all the rest of the stolen bikes from the container to reach mine...It's a racket!
Time would only matter for each lock if you replaced the cutting wheel for each lock. Being homeless for 5+ years I can confirm that people that are stealing bikes do carry big cutters around a lot more than you would think and the grinder less often. It's harder for them to hang on to over time because they get desperate and will trade it off. They only cost $20 at harbor freight though. Another thing is one of each type of lock helps. The cable ones need a cable cutter to do it fast. The bolt cutters have a really hard time with those. I use a thick, combo cable (the combo can be figured out in less than a minute if the #/ letter wheels are loose side to side AT ALL) that is made from a better brand. Make sure the wheels are tight. Also: Remove your light when you leave your bike!
Can you? Think about it. If your bike was covered in unremovable hey look this bike was stolen paint, you wouldn't want it back. So the theif sets off the dye pack. Then what? If it's a cheap bike, they just leave it there, and you have to buy a new bike anyway. If the bike is expensive enough, they pay to have it fixed and it essentially becomes a new bike and no longer identifiable to you. You won't get it back. If you do get it back all messed up, what's the repair cost? $600? I have no idea. What's the deductible on your insurance? This only helps people with bikes whose depreciated value is still more than the repair costs, and people with bikes like that don't leave them out much,
Very few people would actually buy this, especially in the beginning. Therefore thieves won't really know about it. It can't deter them, because they won't know it's a dye lock, because they've never seen one before. Plus whose gonna pay for the collateral damage? You dirty up a bunch of private and public property in the process. Your idea isn't practical. The research, the liabilities, the acceptance needed. The price would end up way too high, the demand too low. Such a thing would likely not be legal in many place. Your idea isn't going to get off the ground. Who would want to angel invest in such a thing?
Jack Michaels Useful? No since he doesn't help you in anyway. Also, everyone knows that if someone wants to steal your motorcycle/bike, they will do! If that "article" wasn't a waste of time already, we then see that all the bla bla bla seems that has one objective: make publicity to that Skunklock. "Skunklock: Don't get your bike stolen; pay instead a compensation to your thief on law court"...
+Mshojat If they look easier to steal than any other bike in line of sight they will do, smackheads don't give a damn as long as it can raise £10 for their next hit it will do so whatever is easiest to detach from it's attachment point is all good to them.
I had my £500 bike (current value £250) stolen from inside my locked shed chained to a concrete post (they took the concrete post!), they had to knock through my neighbours fence and climb over a 6 foot wall to achieve this feat. Totally ridiculous. Bike thieves are not the smartest bunch, and there is basically no stopping them.
same in france, it will get stolen or they can even just destroy it if they can't stole it, i've seen so many destroyed bikes where i lived before... Where i live now it's "safer", but i still got my bike stolen last month... It wasn't my road bike but still, i miss it.
I live on an Island in Germany and we have the occasional bike lender here. Unattached bikes will just roam the island because it will just get used, getting from A - B and then it will be thrown into the next bush
i dont even bother reporting a stolen bike anymore. The police in London just mark your case as closed, solved the same day citing that tracking or investigating the bike is impossible and they have no resources to do so.
Someone stole mine nearly in front of Camden Police station then with my next bike I got stopped by MET police, they put a registry sticker on it, not sure how could that help.
Well, you should still report it. It's important for the statistics. If they see how big the problem actually is, they have to start introducing additional measures, like lockable bicycle garage, more police, etc. Without proper statistics, they can deny the severity of the issue.
TJGermany When my bike got stolen in a very busy area (at Sainsbury's near Camden High Street main junction) after a few seconds a policeman was there like like 15 meters away (about 40 seconds after the theft), even a guy saw the thief who was just unlocking his bike next to the spot where my bike was supposed to be. The policeman made a radio call to local patrols about the theft and that was it. I gave him an exact description, it is a unique looking bike, easy to spot from far. I never got that bike back, it wasnt super expensive thought and I bought a new one and a better lock. I was working as a push bike courier. so it was very devastating to start over again, buy a new buy to work and buy all the custom parts I need.
I wish there were gold standard U-locks available which, upon cutting any part of them, will emit a loud sound alarm together with leakage of permanent ink, skunk smell AND electric current (which would not only hurt the thief but also irreparably damage any electrical grinder) !!
7:14 picking isn't a concern. He admits it, everyone knows it. All locks can be picked. The person stealing your bike is a half drunk homeless man using the one tool/crowbar they stole out of an old pickup truck. Its not a cat burglar in black pajamas with a jewelers tool set. The best bike lock, is this: Never lock your bike overnight outside Never lock your bike in the same spot repeatedly Never lock your bike for more than a few hours Never lock your bike in a remote area Have a better lock than the bike next to you
Yeah like Kris says NOT in London, there were pro bike thieves there even 30 years ago............If it isn't nailed down..........................Blessings........
For me, a bike lock is merely a deterrent to common thieves. A committed and experienced thief will not be. When I used to park my bike in Cambridge, I paid a bike shop to look after it for me. Much safer than the 24hr bike park as cameras won't prevent your bike from being stolen.
How to stop bike thieves (and hopefully injure them in the process) : 1. Park your bike on top of a steep hill 2. Undo your brakes 3. Loosen your front wheel 4. Loosen your handlebars 5. Enjoy the show!
The thing to take away from this: don't use anything that can be broken off without an angle grinder. As much as the theif says they're used in broad daylight, your bike would really have to be worth the risk of getting caught. Slightly annoying they've blurred out the brands on the lock...that would be very useful information.
@@pedlpower I can attest to this - the lock got jammed (which is another problem) so when I called a locksmith to break this out, it took him good 15 minutes (and the disc was completely gone) and battery all gone too. I got the Kryptonite NY chain instead now - should hopefully keep the thieves out
Law enforcement should conduct undercover stings with a decoy bike followed by public hangings of the thieves. Worked back in the day for horse thieves and bikes are just another form of transportation.
Great comment! They do that in a lot of places. it helps but still businesses and non-cycling friends need to let you bring your bicycle indoors with them. that's the full proof answer. I just prepared some videos for my channel that I plan to use as educational tools for business owners. (coming soon!) :)
@@micdowek Angle grinder cuts it easily. Altor's design is based on the size, so that smaller disks couldn't reach it. Angle grinder with larger disk will easily cut it.
@@juanbaclavab If you make a bicycle lock out of cubic boron nitrade, I can easily destroy it with an angle grinder. With a right disc, it will crack into pieces, it's brittle.
Colin Bryant honestly, no surprise there, if I was a criminal I'd go for the path of least resistance. I wonder how tricky it'd be to make the bike rack itself the weak point.
The conclusion is that it's pointless trying to protect your property as carrying enough locks to only deter someone for less than a minute is unwieldy for this mode of transport. This means we need the police to be more of a deterrent and sentences to be more significant. I love how the police recommend getting a decent lock but really just get it marked in case we happen to find it in the future - good work there. Marking is pointless, I've literally never heard of anyone getting their bike back and generally the police file reports like a spam email.
I bought a fat tyre bike 2 and a 1/2 years ago to ride with my boys to the beach which is only 400m away. First bike I had bought for about 40 years. All my other bikes had come off the road verge. I had the bike about 3 weeks, and it was stolen from the beach even though I had a good lock on it. i registered the serial number and put photos on "BikeLinc" so it would come up if anybody tried to sell it or hock it. Last week the police advised me they had found my bike during a raid on a house 60km away, looking for other stolen goods. They sent me a photo of the bike and it still looks pretty good. No rust, and still plenty of tread on the tires. The police advised me they had never found a bike after this amount of time, so it's a bit of a miracle - but hey - it happened. I pick it up this week from the Police station!!
I know right! I mean it's not like hackers, for instance, are hired by companies that they breach into right? Oh, wait they are because what they do literally involves investing time into finding flaws...
This kind of people should be hired for security experts as they usually have a bit different view on things. Just give them a high enough salary so they don't have to steal stuff anymore. Anyway I know people who steal just for fun and excitement, not for financial issues.
So...let's ignore one problem because the problem that affects you is more important? FYI, 50% of bicycles are stolen. 0.2% of cars. I'd like to know the stats for motorcycles if you know. We gotta stick together and not think only about ourselves!
7000 motorcycles are stolen in London alone a year, if we put it to general projection, a motorcycle roundly around £2000 to £25000 but the thieves like to steal the expensive ones. So if you do the math you will find out how big is the problem. Bicycles are stolen if they worth some money, the bicycles are inbetween £500 to £3000 mark likely to be stolen. unlike cycles motorcycles which are stolen used in CRIME, so it is very important that we understand motorcycles should be the priority over cycles and CARs in London as because of the crime done by them. Do you know police not allowed to chase motorcycles if they dont have helmets or if they ride so stupid that they will hurt their self? police can chase cyclist or cars no Mather what but motorcycle chases are not allowed from 2014.
Tan Cakar - that is unfortunate, but your thought process will not make any friends and you will end up fighting alone. your justifications do not convince anyone who is a bicyclist that motorcycles are more important.
with that said, thank you for the information. it is important to fight ALL forms of crime and theft. bicycles become our friends and it hurts more than any dollar amount to lose them for some of us. just as you would feel about your motorcycle. I feel your pain. I can tell there is a lot of anger and frustration behind your comment...and probably justified.
wish they made a lock that had an explosive inside and when it is heated to say 180 degrees, which is easily attainable with the electric grinder, and automatically explodes and kills the perp right there on the scene. of course, should you forget your key.... boom
put a shotgun shell in your seat post and place a pin to hold your seat post up when you leave it just pull the pin out simple though i would hate to see the thief after that
I know what you mean but I believe in weekend detention and spending the evenings picking up rubbish or planting trees...................Bless...............
@@SandlapperSam not quite. My range and gun safe would disagree with you. You know what would happen though. "Step away from the B.." **Bang!** as the lookout shoots the "good guy". They ride off with the bike leaving the "good guy" making seal noises on the floor.
@@absolutez3r019 No, but if I challenge him while he is stealing my bike and he pulls a knife and is willing to kill ME over a bike, then a gun comes in mighty handy.
I once saw a youth walk right past a policeman in Mare St. Hackney carrying a huge bolt cropper, he wasn't challenged at all. "Going equiped sir, carry on".
Just bought the NY “Fahgettaboudit” and realize any lock besides the $300 ALTOR SAF lock is cuttable. So I got a boomerang alarm/ gps system too. Last option I guess is bike insurance and thats about $200-$300/year.
So basically just get a lock that can't be pried open. Trying to get something that's angle grinder proof is hopeless, but it's an extremely high risk move by a thief as it makes what they're doing extremely visible and audible from far away.
Had a thick Kryptonite cable lock for my bike and someone cut about 3/4 through it while I was at work. So I quit my job to stay home and keep my bike safe 24/7
Whether you commute on a cheap bike or not, if someone seriously needs a bike for transportation, they will still want to steal. I reckon the best deterrent is multiple disc brake alarm locks in addition to a frame lock and a heavy duty chain lock. The alarms cost little, are light and hard for the thief to get off. Put the bike in a place with a lot of people and the thieve's will realise there are easier pickings elsewhere.
You can get a small GPS tracking device that is inserted inside the bike frame and even sends s message to your phone when it's on the move. Surprised this hasn't taken off.
Yes, if you point out to the thief that he's not using eye protection, he will stop, thank you for your observation, and move on. It happens every time.
We're moving back to the UK/SW London in 3 months. I'm looking forward to being able to riding everywhere again, especially with our toddler, but the cycle theft issue bothers me. As a lifelong cyclist and enthusiast I've had plenty stolen and I've always had top-notch locks. As you can see, they can all be broken. Weigh up your options, never use a cheap, nasty cable lock.
It would be nice if town/city councils built 'behind locked-door' security premises for xxx bikes similar to Holland. I have an e-bike and have only parked it twice for under 10 minutes in my city; I don't like the pavement hoop system, I think the UK can do better 😐
Nobody would bother stealing bikes if there wasn't a market for stolen bikes. People that are too chicken to steal a bike themselves but are crooked to the bone are the ones that support bike thieves and are just as bad or worse than the thieves themselves.
Where i live this is never the case. Ive left my bicycle attached with a cable, or just outside my favorite Chinese food spot and bicycle has never dissapeared. Said nobody ever
I know this is a very old video. But, as an update, there are two locks on the market (2023) that will survive angle grinders: Hiplok D1000 or D2000 and the Litelok X1 or X3. You might even put 2 on your bike to make it extra hard and time-consuming to steal. Be forewarned however, they are very expensive.
The locks you mentioned do not survive angle grinders at all. They merely slow them down somewhat. There are plenty of videos that demonstrate this very clearly.
@Orcinus24x5 I realize that. But it's the question of .. "do I slow them down enough to make the thief look elsewhere or basically leave it unlocked?" Nobody said locks are 100% secure.
@@spocksvulcanbrain Except that's EXACTLY what you said. "there are two locks on the market (2023) that will survive angle grinders: Hiplok D1000 or D2000 and the Litelok X1 or X3." which is a factually incorrect statement. Don't move the goalposts here. You weren't talking about slowing them down or thieves targeting other bikes. You were talking about locks that were grinder-proof.
@@Orcinus24x5 And yet you didn't read my ENTIRE comment where I specifically said it would delay and make it extra hard. That's called cherry-picking. Do better. There are a half dozen videos where it takes 5 or 6 grinder wheels before eventually getting through those locks. That's essentially grinder proof to an owner. Thieves are not going to spend 20 minutes changing those wheels and making a scene when other targets are easier. Furthermore, nowhere in my original comment did I say they were grinder PROOF. I said they will survive a grinder attack (by the method I said herein). So stop being a pedantic putz.
I love how the lock I use took the longest to cut. I have two of them and as the lad said, I lock the wheels and frame to the pole. This video gave me some piece of mind. Though for the most part, if given the opportunity, I never leave my bike outside.
I was looking to buy a new bike, now im searching for balaclavas and 18v angle grinders.
seriously. I don't think i would restrain my self if someone would steal my bike in front of me either
Brad Foster lol
this is not funny, but at the same time, I'm not sure how i feel about these videos. what we really should be doing (especially what police should be doing) is telling business owners and non-cyclists that they should let bicyclists bring their children INDOORS with them! bicycles should not be left unattended and its infuriating when store employees tell me to 'leave it outside'. they just have no clue, so education is key.
Neither would I I love my bike too much Angle grinder doesn't scare me at all
20v is the way to go
The purpose of a good lock isn't to prevent people from taking the bike. It's to make it difficult enough that they'll consider stealing the bike next to it instead.
Well that's sad.
So the first advice would be to lock your bike next to another bike 😂😂
break the bicycles lock next to yours to make yours more secure
@@nolanr1400yh.. common sense. Lock your bike next to a nicer bike with a shitter lock.

Known ways how to effectively secure your bike from all thieves:
- Buy a second bike, give it to an armed security guard you employ.
If you follow those steps, you should be safe.
this is great haha

The program host/reporter is ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS
I live in the United States. Best advice : lock it in view of cameras, look into bicycle alarms and or hook it to equipment. I usually lock my bicycle close to propane tanks if I’m grocery shopping or in absence of that I will lock it to a rack (4 locks).
a to year late to the conversation but them are all good ideas and some I will implement once I replace the bike someone stole last week.
Propane? Now that suggest an interesting countermeasure to the grinder attack.
Okay so why is there no technology that can clunks up the angle grinder???? Some kinda sticky stuff that grips on when it gets cut / hot.
-.- Cat false, most locks are not cut during manufacturing. They usually heat up the metal till it’s not solid then put it in a mold.
@-.- Cat thanks zen master guru
Because it hasn't been invented yet?
Fill the lock with corundum n stuff.
That's what is used for safes. It gives thieves a hard time. Some fill materials throw fire when cut, to injure the thief.
However the lock size would be unpractical and expensive.
a hollow core sufficient enough to gum up a grinder would weaken the strength of the shackle, making it more susceptible to bolt cutters. they use angle grinders, but not often enough to warrant the design feature. snips and bolt cutters are the majority of tools used.
I've been after a new bike for a while now...Thanks to this video I think I'm going to have one by this time tomorrow.....thanks for the info.
No bike is safe from the thumbnail.
James Schrumm lol
Instead of adding more locks, they should make easy detachable handlebars that you can take with you. This stop thieves riding off. Also steering lock is useful.
they could just carry their own detachable handlebar then..

Basically no bike is safe no matter what lock you have
This is a good observation.
Glad mine took the longest
Not so happy it was still only just over 1 min
Last week my mate had his D lock cut in public - someone asked the thief why he was cutting the lock, and the thief said "my girlfriend lost her key" and he was off with the bike.

Thank you for the lock info very helpful
After seen 900+ LockPickingLawyer's videos I say its really easy to steal bicycles.
You can take the bike with you everywhere where you go if possible to take it with you
Peter Kroll
Thanks for the reply and Yes I did get that impression when looking at him.
IO thanks for the advice. ☺️

Plus people steal converters from cars with power tools at 2am, and nobody notices.
Great, and I’ve just bought one of these locks. 😕😐

Ah thank you!
Lock companies don't want to have their locks shown being broken into in under a minute. It looks bad for them and gives them grounds to sue. Even if they won't win, its still not worth the legal headache if a lock company wishes to pursue legal action
where did i mention cars? also who would they sue? themselves? lol
Well, you mean in UK right? Unfortunate that legal system is useless.

London with 10 million security cameras, and the 'police' don't find the thieves.
The police are the thieves
Yep but if you walk with butter knife outside they will knock on your door the next day
i would be surprised if AI software is not used already to spot and track anyone carrying bolt croppers or portable grinder in London.
The cameras are to spy on regular people, not criminals. Britain's an anarchic tyranny.

So, to put it simply, if they want your bike, they can get it. Best you can do is make it take long enough that they don't bother.
Yeah, that's how it is. You gotta be grateful for the people who uses crappy locks so it's always easier for thieves to take those and not spend minutes working on yours.

Second, a shipping container near the port. We had to pull out all the rest of the stolen bikes from the container to reach mine...It's a racket!

A bug detector can easily find these transmitters
Hey dude, can I have the link to buy the chip?
Same question here - where to get it?
@carlohemi can we have the link to the chip you speak of?
Also: Remove your light when you leave your bike!
i'd love to see a u-lock with a hollow core filled with the same sort of dye they use to deter shoplifters, maybe mixed with mace.
YAS :P
But that die would ruin the bike, making recover meaningless.
Or, the lock could be filled with midgets that slide out and flog your knees.
So you're basically telling me i have to lock my bike right next to my desk lol

same in france, it will get stolen or they can even just destroy it if they can't stole it, i've seen so many destroyed bikes where i lived before...

Same here in America
Someone stole mine nearly in front of Camden Police station then with my next bike I got stopped by MET police, they put a registry sticker on it, not sure how could that help.
Well, you should still report it. It's important for the statistics. If they see how big the problem actually is, they have to start introducing additional measures, like lockable bicycle garage, more police, etc. Without proper statistics, they can deny the severity of the issue.

When my bike got stolen in a very busy area (at Sainsbury's near Camden High Street main junction) after a few seconds a policeman was there like like 15 meters away (about 40 seconds after the theft), even a guy saw the thief who was just unlocking his bike next to the spot where my bike was supposed to be.
In America, we hunt bike thieves down for sport on weekends....
The best bike lock, is this:
Never lock your bike overnight outside
Never lock your bike in the same spot repeatedly
Never lock your bike for more than a few hours
Never lock your bike in a remote area
Have a better lock than the bike next to you

For me, a bike lock is merely a deterrent to common thieves. A committed and experienced thief will not be. When I used to park my bike in Cambridge, I paid a bike shop to look after it for me. Much safer than the 24hr bike park as cameras won't prevent your bike from being stolen.

The thing to take away from this: don't use anything that can be broken off without an angle grinder. As much as the theif says they're used in broad daylight, your bike would really have to be worth the risk of getting caught.

I had the bike about 3 weeks, and it was stolen from the beach even though I had a good lock on it.
i registered the serial number and put photos on "BikeLinc" so it would come up if anybody tried to sell it or hock it.

This kind of people should be hired for security experts as they usually have a bit different view on things. Just give them a high enough salary so they don't have to steal stuff anymore. Anyway I know people who steal just for fun and excitement, not for financial issues.
is this a fucking joke? there is average of 10 motorcyles stolen in London a day. A motorcycle is a lot money and police doesn't do anything about it.
It's more of a Can't rather than a don't.

A heavy duty chain lock, in particular, is not light.
Running an angle grinder with the hoodie string is a good way to become a dead man bike thief
In 2015, Darren appears to fit into today's look.
You can get a small GPS tracking device that is inserted inside the bike frame and even sends s message to your phone when it's on the move. Surprised this hasn't taken off.

and you think the radio signal will get out from inside the steel tube? i doubt it.

No eye protection with an angle grinder? Rather you than me...
If a thief was willing to think that much about stealing from you, he'd be a banker.
Yes, if you point out to the thief that he's not using eye protection, he will stop, thank you for your observation, and move on. It happens every time.
That's why you put a GPS locator inside of a handle bar.

Q. How to not get your bike stolen?
A. Walk.
i recommend you ride an old clunker and use a quality lock. the effort to remove a good lock wont be worth the effort.

Nobody would bother stealing bikes if there wasn't a market for stolen bikes. People that are too chicken to steal a bike themselves but are crooked to the bone are the ones that support bike thieves and are just as bad or worse than the thieves themselves.
That s easy….Bike shops are the first to buy stolen bikes...So no, you might simply think it s a 2nd hand bike price.
Where i live this is never the case. Ive left my bicycle attached with a cable, or just outside my favorite Chinese food spot and bicycle has never dissapeared. Said nobody ever
I find that having an inexpensive bike is a terribly efficent way of making sure no one is going to steal it.
Pictures and videos of these NOT surviving angle grinders don't fill me with much confidence.
