Gearing Up For Espresso

- I just bought a new, deluxe coffee machine, with an E61 group, PID temperature control, and dual boilers, to mark our departure into espresso territory. I chose the Profitec Pro 600, and this video explains why I picked that specific make and model over the many competing options. I also just got a Eureka Mignon Libra espresso grinder, shown briefly, which I will review for you soon.

I took delivery of the pro 700 a few weeks ago. I also bought it from Ciaran in Home Coffee Machines. I'm absolutely delighted with it.
So happy that we lost the music in the background!
Thank you for your uploads… !
I think your channel Should Be Called Mastermind Coffee! So everyone know what’s Up!
Yesss!! Can't wait for those videos. I would be especially interested in a video about the PID Controller (and how to set up the individual P, I and D values)
Looking forward to this series! Thank you for the content
Very excited for this series!
Can't wait to see your analysis! Nice choice!
Thank you for sharing all your knowledge and curiosity withy us!
This will be such an incredible series!! Love your work and can’t wait for this :)
I cannot wait for this entire series ❤
Excited for this series!
This is going to be epic. Thanks for your efforts.
Awesome!!! Looking forward to watching
Can't wait on the next video.
Huzzah! Looking forward to it.
Wonderful cool and exciting, the best never rest, looking forward to it
So much looking forward to the videos.. this is a whole level deeper than anything I know of in the espresso community 🙏🏻
So excited for this content!
Can't wait, this looks good.
Great video. I want a Profitec.
Oh wow, what a coincidence! I just bought a pro 600 during thanksgiving as well! I am loving it!
The funny thing is that I stumbled upon your channel when I was researching for a grinder to go with my pro 600.
Now, we have the exact setup - pro 600 + niche zero!
Looking forward to learning about my pro600 with you in the next six months ;)
Exciting stuff!
Great choice in machine. I have the same currently and am awaiting delivery of a Sanremo YOU. I’m excited to see this next step for the channel.
I'm just getting into coffee, I have been watching quite a lot of coffee related videos, and so far this is the first comment I send. I love how you make your videos and the content you show, glad I found this channel, most informative and enjoyable that I have seen so far.
This was THE machine that I was considering when I said, "Wait a minute... how did you get up to this price bracket? Maybe it's time to go look at those single boilers again." It's sort of got everything you might want - absolutely fantastic choice (just $1k more than I was prepared to spend).
This is EXACTLY what happened to me too.
Awesome video, very hyped to fully understand how does each part of an espresso machine work(because i haven't much information about it on, just general explanations and I love your approach to the different brews and how you explain almost objectively )
Also in the near future I'm buying a gaggia classic pro, and maybe modify it, so if you can compare it to yours will be amazing ( I am expecting to fully understand every piece of the machine and learn how to replace it, so thanks a lot in advance)
Always a joy watching your videos. Love and peace. Tim
Welcome back Tim, and thanks :)
This should be fun! Curious to see your thoughts between a higher flow precision basket on a 9bar machine vs the robot. Also would love to see what pressure setting you prefer on the Profitec.
5:40 "It could serve for light commercial duty at say a restaurant..." I was under the impression that for such use in the US, a machine would need to be NSF certified. I could not find any such reference in the user manual or Profitec's website.
Good choice! I was looking for a good espresso machine too I just use it for espressos mainly and making milk drinks occasionally. Went with the profitec go considering the price, it uses e61 portafilters and the relatively large brass boiler sitting on top of the group keeping everything at the right temperature. My workspace is very limited so the small size is appreciated. Getting this to Ireland for 880 euros feels like I robbed profitec and I paired it up with a new eureka zero grinder and for a total of about 1200 euros makes it an insane value kit, don’t think anything that costs way more than these two could make noticably better espresso. Very interesting and informative series, will keep watching!
Excellent choice, it's what I chose, only I didn't have the option of the levers for steam and hot water. Not that it matters much, I rarely turn on the service boiler, which makes me wonder why did I spend so much money to get a dual boiler when I obviously would have been fine with a single boiler! I did have to remove the cup rail to get it to fit under my cabinets and I simply replaced the rail with 4 tiny knobs instead, so I can lift the top off for filling. I look forward to your new videos!
I’m looking forward to this journey!
I’m curious if and to what extent a dual boiler adds value to a HX machine and the same goes for a PID controller albeit to a lesser extent.
I can hardly wait to see the verdict on that flow control device.
Bring it on!
jep i see nice videos on the horizon :-) im a happy user of a ECM Syncronica .. so im very interested about your details on the Profitec
Look forward to this series. I limit myself to one cup of coffee a day, so a dual boiler machine is a bit of a waste of energy for me to use, especially with an E61 group head.
OMG FINALLY HE GOT A MACHINE WITH A PUMP
Remember to compare shot quality with your Robot and with your 9barista!
Definately agree with this sentiment!!
Exactly this! Also a review on the longevity of the 9barista would be super interesting 🙏🏻
I'm looking at getting one of these...I would be interested to know if the single basket works/makes good tasting espresso.
How would you compare this to the rocket apartmento? Reason I'm considering is there is a used rocket nearby for cheap, like $1200
well, e61 are not very efficent buuuuttt if you use them as your rooms primary radiator, I would argue they are pretty effiecient.
Interested to know what pump pressure you set this machine at
I've had my Pro 600 for a few months now. Between factory defects in the pre installed flow control kit and sporadic filling of the service boiler I'm not terribly impressed with it so far..
Would you recommend Profitec pro 400?
I've had a Pro 600 for 2 and half years now and I love it. I added the Coffee Sensor flow control which has really added to the capabillities. Your comment about "no sharp edges" is certainly not true for my 600. After slicing my hand and finger twice on the edges of the drip tray, I finally took a diamond file and smoothed them out. The edges were like razors. I purchased the Eureka Mignon Silencio with my 600 and it was a huge step up from my trusty old Rocky that I had for 15 years. I bought my setup from Clive Coffee in Portland. They have fantastic customer service.
Maybe the newer models had those improved?
I bought mine just a couple weeks ago and it looks gorgeous and no sharp edges at all. The soft edges feels great!
I second that Clive coffee customer service is top notch!
@@Phantom1000 I complained to Clive about the sharp edges and mentioned it in the review of my machine, so maybe someone is paying attention. Merry CHRISTmas!
Can you make a video about the shots you get using your modded specialita? I've been curious on how that changes the flavour profile in espresso.
I tried it with the Robot and I wasn't impressed, but I will try again with this machine because I can dial in the temp and maybe get something interesting in a good way :)
Looking at the cost of these in Europe, we low voltage folks Stateside absolutely get murdered by the cartels locally marking up the prices on these.....Ciaran is a champ as well. We just need to find that guy a way to swap parts to get 110v compatible machines.
I can't believe no one is making prosumer-level machines in the USA. The market would be huge. But there's nothing between Slayer and Bunn :(
I can understand your reasoning to choose a Profitect after watching the video, but I'd still say look at the Lucca flow control device and compare it to the knob you have now
I will certainly be addressing the short radius there. You can get about the same precision just cycling the pump manually, with a pressure gauge mounted on the group. Which is how I do it :)
the water temperature is interesting.
howcome in the first ten seconds the water coming put of the group head is less than the desired one? does it mean that every shot starts with "cold" water and only after ten seconds the "proper" water arrives?
should we before every shot open the water knob for ten seconds, quickly install the portafilter and start our shot?
Yes, the group is cooler than the boiler, so the water starts out cool. You should do a 10-sec warming flush if the machine has been idle. If you're doing shots back to back, no need to flush between each one. I will cover this in detail in a separate video.
4:28 the brewboiler will be at around 106 celsius for 94 brewtemperature, because of 12 or 13 degrees offset. nice vid as allways.
Fair point. I'm probably overstating the difference between the boilers a bit since the brew one constantly sheds heat through the group. But I was on a roll :)
Hey Thomas, cool idea for a series. Your equipment breakdowns are unparalleled. I am particularly curious how the flow control works.
Btw: don't take this the wrong way, but as a German company, the "pro" in Profitec is pronounced pro, not prah. I know you are a stickler for semantics. ;)
Nice to hear from you Tom. That flow control vid will be up this evening. Thanks for the correction, and welcome to the community.
Are the shots any better than the Robot? Will you be using your Robot at all now?
