Michaels hatred of Toby was such a great addition to the show. It’s totally unwarranted and that’s why it’s so funny. Toby is probably the nicest, kindest guy on the show and Michael hates him just because of his job description.
Toby is divorced, and it’s a situation where Michael feels he’s leaving his kids without a dad. Since Michael’s own dad left him, he hates Toby for doing the same.
Toby's face when Michael insults him is amazing. I mean, his no expression always gets me. But there's one moment when Toby has a smile on his face, when he is sitting in front of Michael. Priceless moment
I know it's absolutely classic one of my favourites not really a line but when he's looking for a place to sit down to have lunch and all the seats are taken and Toby is the only one who has a space next to him so Michael is forced to eat with him. Toby starts giving him advice and Michael doesn't even say anything and he just knocks over Toby's tray of food and walks away LOL
The time when he was standing outside the bathroom when Michael was in there struggling with his injured foot, and he walks away with a little smirk was so cathartic lol

Love the theory that Michael hates Toby because he represents something he hates and something he fears: his own father and fear of being alone. Until the later seasons Toby legit was a polite loner not looking to be friends with anyone and just do his job which is the complete opposite of Michael who's desperate for friends and attention, to everyone else Toby is just an introvert who may have friends but prefers to be by himself and just read and write mystery novels but micheal perceives Toby's "lack of friends" as a character flaw that will lead to Toby dying alone which again is Michael greatest fear as he's stated a few times during the series. Michael also is projecting his own feelings about his father onto Toby, its not clear what caused the marriage to fail but it is clear that Michael blames his father and has stated at least once that divorce is the failure of the man who couldn't keep his family together. So with his own personal bias about his father Michael assumes Toby was a horrible husband and inattentive father so he hates him even if Toby did everything right in his marriage

The day Toby stands up to Michael is the day Michael being mean to him stops being funny. The writers knew that Toby standing up to Michael would ruin everything.
JackFlash85 I think him not standing up for himself is just there to show he hates his job, is miserable and depressed. He lacks self-respect so he allows Michael to go on with the abuse.
I think it's amazing how the jokes are so good that everyone likes them even though Toby isn't a hated character or something. Most viewers like Toby but still love the jokes Michael makes, even though they are clearly crossing the line
Toby was the single most tragic character of the show. He was so depressing that nobody wanted to be friends with him. He left for Costa Rica and had to come back out of pure loneliness. And in the show's finale, it just pretty much ended for him in loneliness.
I don't think Michael bullying Toby was/is supposed to be funny. It's a form of abuse and it's wrong. It might be there to show Michael's own character flaws (and Toby's), and perhaps even to challenge the viewer to not get desensitized to it, or just as a way to portray something that goes on in many if not all workplaces... Still, not everything shown in a comedy show is supposed to be funny, relaxing and accepted as is.
A theory: There is a logic to Michael’s hilarious, but seemingly unwarranted meanness toward Toby. Michael truly wants everyone in the office to love him and think he’s the greatest. Deep down, though, he knows that no one actually loves him. However, he can avoid facing that grim reality if he has a scapegoat: enter Toby. Michael has deluded himself into believing that he could make the office a place wherein everyone finally realizes how great he is *if only Toby would let him do as he wants*. Thus, whenever Toby shuts him down, this confirms, in Michael’s mind, that Toby is the real problem; the “real” reason that people don’t love him, rather than his own self being the actual problem. When Michael gets angry at Toby, therefore, it is not really because he’s angry at Toby-it’s a manifestation of the anger he feels about his own failure to make the office employees love him.
There are just small, silly plots added to the show.. the hatred for Toby and the love for Ryan.... added so many opportunities for humor.. neither made real sense.
Michael tries to be nice to everybody else mostly because he wants them to like or love him. He needs a target for his negativity and shoots at Toby consistently. His head exploding in Threat Level Midnight is the ultimate aggressive move😂

I'd hate to be around Toby too. He is the ultimate blackhole for charisma & energy, and it would EXHAUST ME being in his presence for more than a second.
Wait....after for so many years of watching this show, I finally heard Toby Mention Bishop O'Hare. It's a Catholic High School in Kingston, Pennsylvania which is in Luzerne county. I would always walk past it whenever I would walk home from middle school. Just amazed that today is the only time I heard Toby mention it. Such memories. This means Toby probably grew up in Luzerne County, and then moved to Lackawanna County as an Adult.
Oh, wait. Does Michael he Toby because he’s from Luzerne County? If that’s the case, that I could remind Michael that many great people came from Luzerne.
I think Michael's dislike for Toby can basically be boiled down to his general dislike towards authority, especially authority that tries to steer him away from his nontraditional methods. On top of that, Toby's reserved and soft-spoken personality is completely antithetical to Michael's, making him an easier target for bullying, which Michael takes full advantage of.
The smile on Jim's face when Michael is singing - Jim's probably the only one one who has understood why Michael has set up the party and how much he's enjoying himself dissing Toby publicly, again!! 😂

The actor who plays TOBY is always so calm with the insults as I've not seen any OUT TAKES yet of him losing it!
I'd hate to be around Toby too. He is the ultimate blackhole for charisma & energy, and it would EXHAUST ME being in his presence for more than a second.
He’s so shy and quiet
“Who let the lemon-head into the room? You are a waste of life and you should give up.” Is probably the most savage line in the entire series
It's amazing how they did these characters. We love Michael. Michael hates Toby. We also love Toby. 😂
5:32 wasn't even a slur, that was just an assault.
"who let the lemon head in to the room? You are a waste of life and you should give up." 😂😂😂😂
3:40 "This is an environment of welcoming...and you should just get the hell outta here" hahaha
4:12 Being denied communal food is deeply engrained in our brains at a primal level... nothing hurts more.
"Goodbye Tooooby!🎵" Michael was ecstatic about Toby leaving. 🤣🤣🤣
"Toby's divorced" out of nowhere will always make me cackle and then hammer him down mentioning how he slept in his car once.
@@NicoleCzarnecki The city of Luzerne or Luzerne County??? LOL... It's so weird because Luzerne is also in Luzerne County.
“An evil snail” it such a hilariously accurate description of Toby😂
I think Michael's dislike for Toby can basically be boiled down to his general dislike towards authority, especially authority that tries to steer him away from his nontraditional methods. On top of that, Toby's reserved and soft-spoken personality is completely antithetical to Michael's, making him an easier target for bullying, which Michael takes full advantage of.
The smile on Jim's face when Michael is singing - Jim's probably the only one one who has understood why Michael has set up the party and how much he's enjoying himself dissing Toby publicly, again!! 😂
Toby was really a pushover because as an HR rep he really let Michael get away with ALOT.
*Ryan
He doesn't care about his job. He mentions it often
When Pam says Michael so soft spoken and Michael trys to deny that it was his gift for Toby is just genius, one of my favorite scenes ever
Best show ever existed.
The way Michael treats Toby...It comes back to Michael one way or another....
Karma 💀
My life is Michael and i am Toby 😂
3:27 this I believe was the very first moment that Michael started hating Toby, not because of the joke he said but because everyone laughed
6:35 "Why? 😔"
He sounds so sad lmfao omg
I had to rewind the scene like 10 times when Michael silently pushes Toby's lunch tray onto the floor, before getting up to just walk away.
It's one of funniest things I've ever seen.
Apparently (not sure if true), that part was improvised. You can see Toby hiding a smile too....so it probably was. :D
he deserved it for asking for an extra copy of the diary pages! lol
@@airslug1 I agree
🤣
In all the jobs I have worked there was always that one dude who was basically Toby, just cruising for a bruising😅
My name is Captain Brusin'
I wish Toby was allowed retribution
Rewatched this series and realized Holly insulting Toby was the moment Michael fell in love with her.
I like to believe that Toby and Michael are the two best friends anyone could have IRL
I have so much respect for Toby for tolerating all of this
The most shocking part is when Michael, “You my friend” like I know that’s an expression but still
Love the word choice histerical on 5:13 lol
Im not saying that Toby's the best character in the office, but it's sad that nobody tried to stand up for him when Michael bullied him.
We mostly only seen how good he was because of Michael lol
2:45 Offers a spare bed out of the kindness of his heart. TOBY, YOU MONSTER!!!!😂
“Toby is in HR which means he’s technically not a part of our family, also he’s divorced so he’s really not a part of his family” 🤣
Toby: is shot in the movie
Everyone: horrified
Meanwhile Michael: *this is fine*
Fully convinced Michael made Threat Level Midnight just to make shooting Toby a reality
I really wanted Michael and Toby to be friends at the end :(
I love how they are holding so hard their laughs LOL
"Why are you the way that you are". That's it. That's the one.
