You mention a "Demolition" blade amongst your selection...what are these used for? (ps just bought an 18v Dewalt flourescent light (DC527N) as a bare unit,lol,its pretty good,especially for cycling the batteries when youre not using them much,would definetely recommend as supplemenatry lighting)
Thanks for replying. Yes it vibrates a lot on no load,however,after googling recip saws,it seems they do suffer from vibration to one degree or another. Theres a lot of power running through it-its a beast! Got it from hbttoolman on ebay...no Dewalt packaging,just bubble wrap and a bag...made in Mexico,hmmm.
The main advantage of these saws are that they can be used in very tight spaces. They are not very fast saw but you can get around and saw everything with them.
I own one of these exact models and have cut 10's of thousands of branches on my property over the years using 3 charged lithium batteries on average each time i take it out so yes very serious use.... a tip to the new users in the garden CUT GREEN STUFF WILE ITS GREEN BECAUSE LETTING IT DRY THEN CUTTING IT MAKES THE JOB X 10 HARDER.... must have tool as you said in video👍
I sold mine a couple of years back, as I upgraded to the newer XR batteries. I loved this saw, it was superb. I cut out plenty of disused steam pipes etc. very easily using one of these! Thanks for the comment
like you said, their main function is demolition, and I dont do a lot of demo. when I work with metal, I always reach for my grinder. circlular saw for strait cuts and a jig saw for complicated cuts. i do use a recip saw for cutting nails to prevent damage to projects that need a repair. My main issue and why I stay away is the lack of precision and control. Dewalt blades fail on me a lot, I prefer lenox or Milwaukee blades.
Question... is there any gate/brush/mechanism-of-any-sort that keeps the generated dust from getting inside the body, into the gearing? I've had 2 other recips go dead on me because of sawdust getting inside and gunking things up.
No, you can only put the correct voltage battery on the same voltage tool. You can get chargers though that charge batteries from 10.8v to 18v but the machines only take the one voltage of battery- apart from the new flex volt stuff.
Yes, it is an old Record vice (vise). I found it for sale on ebay locally and only paid about £30 for it. To buy one of these brand new it's over £500 Thanks for the comment ;-)
I have this unit and it's a real workhorse. Cuts small trees fast using the long wood blades! You're right -- this is my first recip saw and I wonder how I ever worked without one before. The only downside is that it uses batteries fast - good to have extras ready to go.
CanadianBullFrog I think its because you have more control, you can use wahtever blade you want, a chaisnaw is often much bigger and often mainly used for cutting wood or bottlecaps also the upwards direction blade makes it versatile, its just about size and taste and often the or if not always the chainsaw is powered by a motor, imagine getting small exhaust gasses amounts in your attic if your cutting pipes :)
I bought one of these on the strength of this video,and ive never looked back,i use it all the time,its fantastic,especially for heavy pruning.Cut through scaffold pipe like butter...bye bye hacksaw!
I used mine on site quite a bit to cut through some redundant steam pipe and lagging, it cut through it with ease (much easier than in this video as the pipe was securely fixed). They bought a load of Bosch 18v gear including the reciprocating saw and it's not a patch on this Dewalt. It's a cracking piece of kit ;-) I'm glad that you are happy with yours! Some of the newer XR stuff i havent been happy with,but the older XRP gear is generally bullet proof and solid,albeit getting harder to find. Stay well my friend.

These things murder the batteries...not only runtime,but by overheating the batteries. Id say it was the most power hungry Dewalt cordless tool..even more so than the grinder.
If you get down to Aldi sharpish today,they are selling a 12 pack of mixed recip saw blades for £4.99,amongst other things. Might be good for those jobs where you dont want to knacker a Dewalt blade,lol.
animal79thecat That reminds me- A guy at work needed to borrow this to trim some trees, I knew he would look after it so I lent it him one weekend knowing that if I needed to cut anything I always had the chain saw. I bought some fencing posts from a seller in the next town on ebay, the picture showed square posts with a point. I bought 8 of them and went to collect them. When I got there- no point on them!!!! I told the guy that the ones in the picture had a point and he said in the description he said there was no point. So I thought fair enough and would put a point on using the chain saw. The only problem was that the chain saw was so blunt it would not cut the bloomin point, so I had to dig out holes and concrete them in. How much did I miss this saw that day LOL. Later that night I checked ebay and it didn't say there was no point on the posts, needless to say I have not bought anything from him since ;-)
***** lol,nothing worse than ebay conmen. I used mine to cut points on some old posts where the bottom had rotted off,but the rest of it was still ok. I never thought id say this,but i actually now use my cordless recip saw and angle grinder more than my drills! With having a field to manage,and no power,these things are lifesavers,i dont know how i got things done in the past before i had them.

Is it bad to use metal cutting blades at such a high speed? Does the heat not dull the blades faster?

A wood blade should cut that, or a metal blade should easily cut it.

They are good, as are the Bosch blades. I have not tried many other makes though as the Dewalt and Bosch have always done the trick ;-)

A bi-metal blade will be fine, but it may burn a bit going through timber. Coarse teeth are better on wood ;-)

Why would you want to use a reciprocating saw over a chain saw? Chain saw cutting time would be 10 seconds or less.

I have seen blades that have diamonds on the edge for cutting cast iron. You can cut almost everything with one of these.
