NAND flash like to be warm, so cooling it too much is not good for longevity. Luckily, that simplifies the testing process because NVME drives automatically lower their transfer speed to keep themselves from getting too hot. This means that you don't have to compare temperature to choose the best drive, you can just look at which enclosure has the highest transfer speeds. The enclosure that gives you the best transfer speeds is also doing the best job of keeping the drive cool. So if you look at the numbers on this video, you already have the full picture and can easily choose the best option (at least out of the ones he tested).

Transfer speeds will not only be affected by the USB controller on the host side but the USB/NVMe controller/chipset inside of the enclosure and its quality. Simply looking at the "speed" will not tell you the temperatures, especially since every model of an NVMe controller will tolerate different temperatures before throttling. And that's even not to mention the RAM used in the specific SSD, its brand, type and capacity...

The only time temps matter is if the speed drops off a couple of seconds into a transfer, indicating that the drive is throttling. So no, looking at the speed will not tell you the temperatures, but knowing the temperature doesn't help you. Knowing if the enclosure is cooling enough to maintain full speed does help you.

However I did not see you trying this out with the Sabrent ROCKET SSDs... yet. I will be using 2Terabyte SSDs for the SCRATCH files and it really matters when FINAL editing to save production time. Nice testing, Chris. It would be interesting to see how the SK Hynix Gold P31, the Platinum P41, the WD Blue SN570 and the WD Black SN770 perform with these enclosures. It seems to me that there are some issues with the controller/bridge for this kind of device. USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) devices can deliver 1,000 MBps read and 900 MBps write speeds while USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20 Gbps) devices does 2,000 MBps reads and 1,900 MBps writes. So I wonder why USB 4 (40 Gbps) devices fall short and are barely faster than USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 devices? Considering that USB 4 enclosures are almost 3 times the cost of USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 and almost 7 times the cost of USB 3.2 Gen 2 enclosures, I would think very long and hard before buying them.
Thunderbolt devices are back compatible with 3.2 gen 2. Gen 2x2 is not mandatory for thunderbolt certification. USB4 is OK as it is still USB protocol with same or better speeds - USB4 requires only 20Gbit/s, 40Gbit/s is optional for USB4

My Mac mini M1, Mac Studio M1 max and Mac mini M2 pro are having massive problems, connecting more than a single Thunderbolt device! I am using the Acasis/Anyono housings and right now testing OWC 1M2. A was always changing ports, cables and continued rebooting, no success… Always the connection of one Thunderbolt device gets lost on the Mac. Is Apple not able using two Thunderbolt devices at the same time?😢😮

Thank you for your comprehensive test. I use Microsoft Onedrive on my Macbook and I want to synchronize Onedrive with a folder on an external drive. Therefore I am looking for an external storage which would have the Removable Media Bit set to "0". Do you know whether any of the tested packages are recognized by the MacBook as "non removable" or whether the controllers can be patched accordingly?
Have you had any failures reading hard drives with the Yottamaster through a USB connection? I could not get two high speed high capacity nvme drives going with it, two 2TB SN8250X's and two 1TB FireCuda 530's would not read and could not be initialized or formatted whilst connected to my PC's Z690 motherboard through usb. Meanwhile M1 Macbooks and Mac Studios read all of them without a hitch connected through Thunderbolt. It is most likely one of the two controller chips, the JMS583 for USB, included on most of these enclosures that are just not compatible with some nvme's. I say Some because I did manage to use the Yottamaster enclosure on all fronts with a 970 Evo in it, but that one is only 500GB and not enough space for my intent, so now I worry about getting another 2tb nvme. Have you tested either the 2TB 980 pro or 970 Evo to work through USB specifically? Thank you
Hi. I use the same condition of Orico housing and 980 Pro. But, My Max speed is 2300 read and write. Maybe the different laptop. I using the 2017 MBP with eGPU on test.
You are very right that the laptop may make a difference here. I tested speeds with a 2015 MacBook Pro and those are slower than the new M1 that I am using. Thunderbolt and USB 4 did change a lot in that timeframe. Though: 2300 read/write is still very performant! So, you should be good for most things you throw at that.

When you do these benchmarks, could you also run them on a Windows machine? I purchased an enclosure and SSD based on this video. While the read performance was as expected, the write performance on the EVO 970 plus connected to a Thunderbolt port on a new Dell XPS 17 (9710) was slower than my Sandisk Extreme USB 3 drive. I opened a support case with Amazon and they set up a conference call with Samsung who said the drive was not supported in an external housing. Since I don’t have the time or hardware to chase down the problem, I returned the external enclosure.

They were about the size of a stick of gum, and if the server lost power for any reason the battery was supposed to save what ever info was in memory, till the power was restored and it could be written to the disks. Sometimes the servers had 1, 2 or 3 batteries in them, and sometimes there was no way to tell which one was bad. Sometimes they would be bumpy, and we could tell that was the one that needed to be replaced. I wonder if companies think it is important any more to keep their customers happy. You are right, it would not have cost but a few pennies to have a capacitor in there to hold cache stable, or allow somehow for write caching.
@@kfl611 same here - the newer raid controllers went to supercapacitors. The only way we knew a drive failed was through lights and error messages. We barely noticed the slowdown during the rebuild on the hot spare. In the good old days I had one raid system recovery that took a week. After that, management was willing to spend more money on a UPS and drop the third party drives.

Thank you very much for this. As a fellow video editor, it's especially interesting to me that you say the read speeds are far more important than the write speeds when it comes to video editing. I thought the write speeds also came into play when rendering sections of a timeline that wouldn't play back w/o dropping frames/ won't play back at full resolution, etc. Then there's exporting projects from the editor as well. I've never done tests on these tasks though, so I don't really know. Would you mind explaining? I'd love to say some $ and buy something like the 970 Evo over the 980 Pro!
There are use-cases in which the write speeds are important (using the drive as a cache drive or when exporting to the external SSD). Personally, I use the internal drive for cache and export and mostly use the external drive to store the project files which pretty much only get read anyways. That's why I would choose the 970 EVO if money is a constraint.

I have the 1 TB M1Max and can always recommend going for more internal storage if possible. But both, the 970 and 980 are also incredible for editing. I am working with Multicam 4K timelines with files from my canon eos r / r5c and pretty much never run into disk speed limitations.

SSD Enclosure (housing LOL ;D "German english") is not responsible for the speed here, but the PCIe. PCIe 3.0 SSDs will be slower than PCIe 4.0 SSDs. Even if the interface of SSD Enclosure is 3.94 GB/s, a PCIe 4.0 SSD will run faster.
I have like 10 nvme around house and multiple pcs and I wanted a solution to just access a nvme like a standard hard drive so have a quick look what is inside and format them if needed, so this is actually what it does?
I have noticed that you have tested Samsung 970 EVO Plus with ACASIS enclosure, I looked at their WEB site and it lists 970 EVO Plus as unsupported. Did you have any issues with that SSD?

to clarify, apple does not support and has not supported 3.2/2x2 for usb, only thunderbolt 4, thunderbolt 3, usb 4, usb 3.1 (10gb), usb 3.0 (5gb) usb 2.0 and usb 1.1, on any of their silicon products, why that is only apple knows, though it should be noted, appropriately equipped docks/hubs with their own usb controller chips, may, I repeat: may give access to usb 3.2 mode, but it ain't guaranteed
Has anybody found an enclosure that fits the Samsung 980Pro WITH the heatsink? Looks like all of these do NOT have heatsinks (I currently have two drives without heatsinks in the Orico enclosure).

I tried both and they were close to being identical. However I decided to go with APFS for my long term use NVME because of the Journaling and such. Loosing the ability to simply plug it into other devices, but that's ok cause all my team uses macOS at this point.
Your testing method is completely flawed, and nothing can be gained from having watched it. The only thing i see in your tests is broken or incompatible hardware, noise, and cache write off. If your going to test in the way you are proposing you would need to run full >2tb volume transfers to heat up each enclosure and device to see which throttles first, and run off their cache. And not by using an speed-o-meter app that tests a 32mb transfer or whatever trivial amount that you had used. And you would need to plot the transfer speeds over time to see something meaningful (cache write off / thermal throttling). All of your devices are also nearly identical, and testing the NVMe's are going to be closely similar in value with the lack of accuracy that your using in your tests. (other than 'something broken' with the Icy Dock which is likely why they took it off the market, and 'something else broken' with whatever derelict P5 you were using). Also, If you want to test the USB4.0, you'll need something like a Firecuda 530 to do that.
Very helpful to rescue me from my dilema on my first ever External SSD to use with my M1 ipad pro and other windows devices.

I have a yottamaster enclosure. It randomly stops transferring files,so now I'm looking at lc power, natec or icy box.
I'd get the ACASIS or Orico. Those are solid housings with great speed.

That to me sounds like a lot of baloney. A nvme should work equally as well in an external and internal enclosure - pcie connections excepted.

SSD Enclosure (housing LOL ;D "German english") is not responsible for the speed here, but the PCIe. PCIe 3.0 SSDs will be slower than PCIe 4.0 SSDs. Even if the interface of SSD Enclosure is 3.94 GB/s, a PCIe 4.0 SSD will run faster.

I'm happily using the ACASIS USB-4 housing and have never had any disconnect issue. Been using it for a few years now.

I have like 10 nvme around house and multiple pcs and I wanted a solution to just access a nvme like a standard hard drive so have a quick look what is inside and format them if needed, so this is actually what it does?
Yes, you can do this with these housings. But if you really just want a docking station, maybe you should buy an NVME docking station?
I have noticed that you have tested Samsung 970 EVO Plus with ACASIS enclosure, I looked at their WEB site and it lists 970 EVO Plus as unsupported. Did you have any issues with that SSD?
In my tests I did not find out why they would say that. For me the drive performed great.

As for the 970 Evo Plus, there are 2 versions. Have read somewhere that the old version has the box horizontal and the new version has the box vertical and this new version performs better.

to clarify, apple does not support and has not supported 3.2/2x2 for usb, only thunderbolt 4, thunderbolt 3, usb 4, usb 3.1 (10gb), usb 3.0 (5gb) usb 2.0 and usb 1.1, on any of their silicon products, why that is only apple knows, though it should be noted, appropriately equipped docks/hubs with their own usb controller chips, may, I repeat: may give access to usb 3.2 mode, but it ain't guaranteed
Has anybody found an enclosure that fits the Samsung 980Pro WITH the heatsink? Looks like all of these do NOT have heatsinks (I currently have two drives without heatsinks in the Orico enclosure).

what format are these drive did you set them? mine is exFat so I could get the crossflat use but I'm getting a lower read and write than these result.

Are the ssd in afps or exfat format?
I tried both and they were close to being identical. However I decided to go with APFS for my long term use NVME because of the Journaling and such. Loosing the ability to simply plug it into other devices, but that's ok cause all my team uses macOS at this point.
Why do you keep looking off camera to your lower right?
Your testing method is completely flawed, and nothing can be gained from having watched it. The only thing i see in your tests is broken or incompatible hardware, noise, and cache write off.
If your going to test in the way you are proposing you would need to run full >2tb volume transfers to heat up each enclosure and device to see which throttles first, and run off their cache. And not by using an speed-o-meter app that tests a 32mb transfer or whatever trivial amount that you had used. And you would need to plot the transfer speeds over time to see something meaningful (cache write off / thermal throttling).
All of your devices are also nearly identical, and testing the NVMe's are going to be closely similar in value with the lack of accuracy that your using in your tests. (other than 'something broken' with the Icy Dock which is likely why they took it off the market, and 'something else broken' with whatever derelict P5 you were using).
Also, If you want to test the USB4.0, you'll need something like a Firecuda 530 to do that.
