Create A Raining Window Effect Prop | Disneyland's Haunted Mansion Ride Inspired Idea For Halloween

  • Welcome to the haunted mansion here's a rain making practical prop idea for Halloween decorating, movie making, or stage rain effect. Here is a way to make a storming rainy window effect similar to the atmosphere you find in Disneyland's Haunted Mansion ride once you step off the stretching elevator but with real water to make it more realistic when up close. We wanted to create the effect using a water feature so you literally see real dripping water down instead of just projecting it. Welcome foolish mortals we are your ghost hosts in this chilling challenge of building a rain pipe window prop for Halloween Parties, haunted houses, walkthroughs and theater productions. You can use this effect in a hallway inside your haunt or walk through maze or right outside one of your windows of your house. The thunderstorm rain window or doorway scene include lightning bolts, real water for rain, smoke from a fog machine, and the sound of a monsoon during the night. This classic rain curtain effect is pretty easy to do and can be fairly inexpensive to achieve. The payoff is a delightfully frightful outcome that will be sure to frighten your guests prematurely. We framed up a squared off area outside the window of our house with 1" x 3" pine boards. We made a water catch troth and plumbed a rain pipe made of PVC for the water after drilling holes every 3" or so. After installing the plumbing we wrapped frayed fiberglass screen wire for windows around the pipe with 3/32" holes. We used a pond pump we used for our foam carved haunted Halloween water fountain prop. We placed the pump down inside a 5 gallon bucket which recycles the rain water. We use several cool white LED bulbs and black light party bulbs with the clamp light sockets. We painted a lightning bolt on a section of cardboard with a glow in the dark paint called wildfire. The lightning was made with a firefly lightning machine but you could use any lightning machine triggered by sound to make this effect work. We used a fog machine to help simulate a foggy scary night. We dressed the inside of the window with a see through lace curtain panel and red curtains close to the ones in the haunted mansion. They even had gold rope tiebacks. We had a lot of fun making this spooky atmospheric prop and hope you enjoy this prop making tutorial video. Please be sure to leave a comment and let us know if there are any prop ideas you would like to see us attempt.

I have a degree in theatre studies and props was my speciality and I have to say that I am so very impressed with what you have accomplished here, keep it up! England isn't as interested in Halloween as the US but we are slowly catching the bug.

I have been watching your videos for a while, and started analyzing the costs of building mazes and facades. I realized that it's actually cheaper to build sets, then to buy those flimsy & poorly made animatronics. Those things should be priced at $25-30, but they are $150-200. When you see them in person, they are just cheap junk, with pvc stands. Also, inflatable props are just junk, and trunk-or-treat has taken the place of Halloween. I think the kids are missing out on the good old fashioned DIY Halloweens we grew up with. Your videos have inspired me to decide to finally go for it, and build a maze this year like I'm talked myself out of for several now. It's fun to build, quick & easy, and fairly cheap. Faster to dismantle then to build as well. Hopefully I can inspire my neighbors to make some cool stuff on our block as well.
My facade is more of a small building, and to same money, I'm stapling 10x25' black 3 mil drop cloth from Walmart onto a frame made of 2x3x8' sticks with 3 inch screws. This is allowing me to make a bigger maze, or much cheaper costs. We'll people really enjoy it every year. I don't think anyone pays much attention to store bought decorations. It just doesn't get any attention. I have Laurel& Hardy on my roof so far. It's so funny to watch people slow to a crawl as they pass. The other day I was in the yard and as a SUV slowed down I heard them say WTF???? I just fell on the ground laughing. They WTF-ed my display. So funny.

At Disneyland in the Tiki Room they use clear/iridescent shaking shimmering plastic fringe in the windows with flashing light for lightning effect. With the rain sounds it’s very realistic feeling.

I made something similar this year, but I think closing it off with a black cloth really adds to yours. Mine is just showing the trees, and strangly is less dark ride like then i expected. Maybe the fog machine will help. I didnt do the water effect this year. I have so much plugged inthis year, I didn,t want the power drain, but the water really adds as well. Great setup.

You guys are too cool! Couple goals, LOL! Not sure if you remember... I picked up 2 pieces of plastic/mirror sheets from you guys. I considered using it for a small peppers ghost effect or an infinity tunnel w/light bulb effect. I ended up painting a dripping Bagul (from Sinister) on one of the mirrors and mounted it to a very large ornate (expensive) gold frame. I love how it looks with all the imperfections and scratches of the mirror I picked up from you guys! I've used it as decor for the past 2 years and my guests are always creeped. I bought my first house this year (and in a neighborhood that attracts many trick-or-treaters) and your videos have served as inspiration for my own spooky home. You guys are awesome... Keep up what you do. Do you have an Instagram? I'd love to show you snaps of my home...

When we did try moving the lights around, each thing made a little difference but it all got washed out whenever the lightning struck which was a lot so I just took them out. I also had a hard time hiding any lights that were behind so that we couldn't see them when looking out the windows. If someone took more time they could probably get it perfect and look super awesome. Great to hear from you!

I'm not trying to "diss" your efforts in creating the effect, it is amazing, but I'm pretty sure Disney achieves this effect with no actual water. In The Tiki Room, they use the same effect with simple thin strips of clear plastic blown by small fans, and reflecting light, with strobe effects and window blinds to mask the simplicity. No actual water needed. I know this video is about 4 years old, but Disney's been using this effect for WAY longer, so maybe consider saving on the water bills and go for the "smoke and mirrors" effect. Plus, a lot less messier. I suppose this may fall into a more REAL version of the rain, but seems costly and very wet!

Thanks for the comment and great info on creating this effect. Yes Disney doesnt use water. We wanted to specifically use water so if you were close you would tell its real water dripping. Unless you far away I think practical effects for things like fire and water look better when its real and not projected. We were just having fun doing this way this time but there are several tricks. Thanks again.

@@HollywoodHaunter Thanks for the kind reply. I guess because the description in the video mentioned Halloween decorating and stage rain effect I assumed it was a more practical set-up, but I admire the work and detail on creating a more real effect for close-up. No doubt the actual water hitting the window and leaving steaks will sell it, but I suppose this is for more high end spook houses with tight spaces, where things are up close and personal. Thumbs up on the engineering work.

Cool but there are easier ways. That was more work then needed

Of course but we did have fun doing it so it didnt feel like that much work to us. 😊

Hollywood Haunter that is all that matters. There are many ways and you do what you feel that makes the project fun. Hours or minutes. There is many ways and none are really wrong if they all work 😊

Dis I miss the part what you connect the lights to create the lightning flashes and residual lighting - timed with the thunder soundtrack?

The lights were connected to a lightning simulator box from lights alive. We have other vids that focus on that in more detail but its basically the kind that flashes to sound.

How did you get the bulbs to pulse ike that?

You can always project a video of rain on the window and put a curtain over it

Did you try moving the lights behind (and just off center) to the rain?
You might get a better read on the drops that way...

+drkim Thank you for your suggestion we did try moving the lights around, pointed them from behind the rain, adding color, even a dimmable LED module and each thing made a little difference but it all got washed out whenever the lightning struck which was a lot so I just took them out. I also had a hard time hiding any lights that were behind so that we couldn't see them when looking out the windows. A person could get some really great effects depending on what their applications are.

Did i miss completely how you get the bulb to respond to the thunder sound?
