Paul & Linda spent a lot of time at their ranch here in Tucson, AZ, a laid-back city where they were always warmly greeted but never hassled. They did their grocery shopping at the same Safeway (supermarket) as a coworker of mine. She was checking out one day & heard them at the next register over, chatting with the cashier - she must be new? They thought they knew all the employees? Paul introduced himself & Linda, & asked her name. Well, onlookers were already concerned about the verge-of-collapse appearance/hyperventilation of the 40-something woman, whom it was later learned was a lifelong Beatles fan. As in “- atic!” When she responded with a shaky “Michelle”. . . God bless her, she was seranaded by Paul McCartney with 2 verses & 2 choruses of “Michelle” & not only survived to tell the tale, but managed to remain standing! In fact, she was pretty quickly put at ease by the couple’s warmth & wit. 💕

We hear songs like "Michelle" and "Yesterday" as an example, by Paul McCartney, and think what good song writing skills.
But think about it - he was around 22 years old at the time, what were any of us doing at 22yrs?
That is not "good" song writing, that is amazingly ridiculous song writing for someone so young. Most people with a lifetime musical training have never come close to this.
    I find that quite remarkable.

"Why isnt this mentioned as one of The Beatles best songs?" I don't think they actually have a "best" song. They have probably 50-100 songs that could be their "best" song, depending on the person's taste and so forth. That's why they're different, and most people can't grasp that. They hear 5 of the most popular songs, and think they know, but they have no clue. You have to go deep to really get it. Fortunately, it looks like you're going really deep. :)

"She's Leaving Home", "For No One", "Here, There and Everywhere", "Norwegian Wood", "In My Life", "Julia" to name a few of their softer songs, all beautiful, outstanding lyrics, some sweet, some melancholy, some sad. Each one invades your brain like an ear worm...you'll be humming in the background of your mind and not usually even realize it. I heard a couple of bars of She's Leaving Home, the other day. Since, I wake up with it gently playing behind my thoughts throughout the day. Such a switch from a lot of the blaring, loud, nonsensical music I hear on commercials, "muzak" in stores, and when sampling other artists...I do give them a chance, but generally...it makes me uptight, anxious, angry, besides the fact it's usually without talent, dedication, creativeness...which every single BEATLES song has in spades, even the ones that aren't your favorites you can still appreciate the craftsmanship. Harri...your awsome. Great analysis and reviews. Just found you. subbed, liked. Namaste.

These girls were part of the local church we were visiting. I knew they didn’t know English or French. But singing it phonetically, perfectly.
This bridge was once the site of a horrific battle and 300 years later, 4 years after the fall of an oppressive Communist regime…’Michelle, ma belle

Kathy's song by Simon and Garfunkel does this for me. Both are beautiful love songs. For a mixture of french and english songs, there is a newer singer, called Patrick Watson, who is Canadian, and he does this in some of his songs....beautiful. Indeed this is such a beautiful song by the Beatles....made me wish my name was Michelle!

I remember exactly where I was the first time I heard Michelle on the radio. I was walking early one morning to help my second grade teacher set up for the day and I had a little transistor radio and Michelle came on. It stopped my seven year old ears in their tracks! It was so beautiful! it’s amazing that even on the crudest of devices in mono, the song stuck with me like many who know exactly where they were when JFK was assassinated. I remember Michelle my bell! Brilliant!

"Michelle" was the most popular Rubber Soul track based on U.S. radio play in the last part of 1965 and the first part of 1966. While it was not released in the U.S. or the U.K. as a single... the song was released as a commercial single in several other countries - and it topped charts in Italy (for eight weeks), the Netherlands (seven weeks), France (five weeks). Sweden (five weeks), Denmark (four weeks) and Argentina, Belgium, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, New Zealand , Norway and Singapore. It also won the Ivor Novello Award for "most performed song" of 1966. And it won the Grammy for "song of the year" in 1967. The song was a HUGE hit among Beatles fans world wide.
Your emotional reaction to hearing the song... was beautiful to see.

Paul is my favorite Beatle and all time song writer. I’m always trying to shout from the mountain top to how criminally underrated Paul is as a bassist. “Old Brown Shoe” & “I Want You (She’s So Heavy) are great examples how revolutionary he was on the bass.

Paul is absolutely my favorite Beatle and favorite bassist ever but the bass on “Old Brown Shoe” is actually played by George! I remember reading something where he had extra time and wanted to experiment on a bassline and Paul was fine with it. George did well :)

You really need to check out "Yesterday" by them. even more beautiful. Some of their more melodic love songs such as this became so pervasive.. so much part of the culture, background music in elevators and grocery stores and such, that it just transcended rock and roll and tends to get overlooked in the long haul. but I guarantee you just about anyone over 50 knows these songs note for note. these songs were covered by everyone from Frank Sinatra to Tony Bennett to night club singers all over the world. The Beatles were so multifaceted it's not even funny.

Man, how many times did I listen to this in the 80's after I discovered it? I can't even count. The one thing that I must mention- I don't think Ringo is actually drumming in this song. It sounds like a programmed beat, with no fills. I didn't even think about that until recently.
