A snowboard and surf trip to Greece has been on my mind for a couple of years. I can’t tell how this part of the world has caught my interest exactly, but suddenly I found myself going through satellite images and maps of the area. My family spent most of their summer holidays in Greece when I was a little kid, but back then I was neither into snowboarding, nor surfing.
With one of the worst winters to hit the Alps in decades and a record snowfall in Greece, the decision to leave Switzerland was easy and the gravityking crew set sails towards the port of Ancona with a van packed with equipment. Surfing Greece and Snowboarding Greece is a very special experience and the locals have been incredibly friendly.
The mountains are pretty and the freeriding can be excellent if you find the right conditions. One thing is sure: you need to be ready to work for it. Most of the lines we were riding were only accessible by splitboard. That's the thing about Greece, you gotta search for the good stuff.
Wintersports - snowboarding in general - are still in development and you feel like 20 years ago in the Alps. But as soon as you leave resorts like Kalavrita/Kalavryta, you find yourself in a very diverse backcountry with lots of powder.
Not your typical snowboarding holiday, but a very rewarding road trip along Greek resorts in the search for powder and waves. We found what we were searching for and even more.

BIG Surprise ! How do know all this ?
I`have heard, that if someone goes skiing on mountain Pilion (near Volos), he can see the sea .
The the view is unique. Skiing + Aegean Sea view ! (probably Skiathos island too).
Pilion is also famous for the fruits (try Kastanien sweets!!) and Volos for his "Tsipouradika" .

@Kyros Haras From pilion you can see 2 different "sea" from both sides of the Mountain. Aegean and Pagasitikos. Pilion has 1500m peak so most of the time has less snow compared to all other resorts. Except ski touring, Vasilitsa (Greek Resort) has some insane offpiste lines. Its a snowboarding paradise. The locals are very friendly and if you ask, they will show you the good stuff of the mountain ;)

Whether what you "expect mostly when thinking of Hellas, regarding summers" i won't comment. The first ski resort in Hellas was most likely in Pilio, Agrioleukes ski resort in north Hellas, and it first opened in the 60s. If not the first one, it is one of the oldest. Sure the whole thing with skiing came after some years most likely with the first start in Alps, most likely. However it sounds a little incorrect to say that snowboarding is still "in development" and you feel like 20 years back in the Alps in Switzerland. Also you only seem to have tried one (?) ski resort/terrains around the area , and that in south Hellas, namely the one in Kalavryta. So, not exactly a top notch ski resort/terrain you tried for you to give a summarize of the ski resorts in Hellas though.

Hey Escalus, thanks for your comment. All I wanted to say is that I feel the same stoke we had in Switzerland 20 years ago. It is mostly gone here meanwhile. Lifts are on another level in Hellas, however, and I wish some of the old stuff back here. Only chairs with bubbles nowadays. We wanted to see other resorts (we did see Elato, though) but the time was just too short. Next time...
