1/4 too much, remember you're losing contrast and detail in the image that you can't recover. I'd stick to 1/8 and push it more in post. DaVinci hack - add noise reduction to soften image, then counter it with adding sharpness. Then add halation effect on top and grain if you want. Best part, it's all built into DaVinci no plugins needed.

    • @Zinstudios1
      @Zinstudios1 2 года назад +2

Do not add sharpening. Contrast pop gives u a more filmic effect. Sharpening appears digital in my opinion

I agree that it's the digital sharpening that's most likely to make video look like video, and that you want contrast. Film is high contrast, but because it's pigment based, it renders color differently. Saturation in film decreases with luminance. You can go into your Lum-Sat curve and pull down the saturation at high luminance. Take a frame with bright reds and yellows, and try pulling down the max lum node to make a linear gradient to start. See how that looks before getting fancy. For me, low contrast movies look like digital imitating 1970s photographs made with snapshot cameras.

Another fun way to get the filmic look without using any sort of filtration is to create an adjustment layer then use the HSL secondary corrector in Adobe to select just the highlights, then add a glow effect, then play around with the opacity layers and opacity strength. It works shockingly well. And the cool thing is, you can control the intensity of your softening filter in that same way. so rather than having to swap out more or less intense filters, you just adjust the opacity of the adjustment layer.

Replacing my fx3 with a 6k pro. That has been the best little tweak I’ve made to the Sony image to get a little more of that “filmic” look.
In all seriousness, I used 1/8 black pro mist on all my Sony footage and they made a nice improvement. I still use them for most of my lenses. And before anyone flames me, I really enjoyed Sony cameras, I switched to the 6k pro for the false color, ease of exposure (I really dislike exposing slog3) and video/cinema specific controls, like shutter angle, one button frame rate changes and ND’s.

I wanna add something to this video, cause while diffusion filters certainly brings you closer to the look of film by lowering the contrast and blooming the highlights, they still aren't quite enough to get you that full-fledged cinematic feeling. Mainly due to how most of all the mirrorless consumer cameras handles the roll-off compared to something like the ARRI Alexa, that's actually build with incredible accuracy to specifically emulate the roll-off you would get from film back in the day.
it is possible however to get VERY close to what the ARRI Alexa does, by applying the wizardry this guy has come up with. He owns an actual ARRI camera and has managed to program a LUT that emulates the characteristics with insane precision. You get the same roll-off that contains an in-build ceiling that prevents clipping, a 99% match in terms of colors and it just takes your footage to a whole new level. You can even slap it on an Atomos and use it while exposing - and it will still give you that soft ARRI roll-off and their colors on the fly. There's even comparisons on his website between the Alexa and cameras like Sony, Fuji, Panasonic etc. with the LUT applied. So you can see for yourself how closely they match up 😉
I'll leave a link to his website here, if I've peaked your interest. I'm not affiliated in any way with his company or the product, but I'll personally vouch for what you get with it. After having tried and tested it for a while now, I simply trust no one else when they try to sell me their ARRI LUT's, cause they're usually just shit and all they've done is tinting the image to the green side 😅

    Hi James,
I like your videos and especially your style very much, but I don't agree to this one at all. About 25 years ago I used the tiffen black pro mist filters a lot to give video which just had 5-7 stops of dynamic range a little bit more cinematic look by reducing contrast. Today we are lucky to have 15 stops of dynamic range and a soft highlight roll-off and on top sharp and clean images even with full frame sensors and fast lenses with F1.8 or even f1.2 with wonderful Bokeh. Why should we ruin this great look by reducing this outstanding quality? Having a lot of soft "cinematic" background and foreground I think you need clear and razorsharp main subjects! If you want a more cinematic overall look, I would recommend the Phantom LUTs for example which give you a look of film stock from Kodac or Fuji.

a good filmic look is darker than you think it is.
if you check your scopes, nothing that isn't a practical light source
should be over 70 to 80 ish. if it still feels too dark,
then take your curves and pull up the middle up a bit.
but bring your highlights down so that it doesn't push past that 80ish range
    because that's a digital characteristic.

With Black ProMist filters the focal length also changes the intensity of the mist hence the reason for the different filter strengths to match cameras utiilizing different focal lengths. At the same time this is still subjective so ultimately it depends on what look you want creatively.

@@sstteevveenn77 more like the other way around. The longer the focal length the more intense it gets. This is especially if your shot is like a close up. I like your content, and respect you as a content creator, but you and other RUclipsrs need to stop pushing this "film look" narrative. It's all a bunch of baloney, and I believe you all are just repeating the same thing someone else says. For instance you call Sony's footage digital and explain that it isn't soft enough in comparison to the black magic, but if you do a simple RUclips search of a7siii vs bmpcc 6k you'll clearly see that the bm 6k has the sharper and more detailed image and the A7siii is softer right out of camera. But then you all praise the bm 6k because of the so called "better image quality" lol. I've even seen Brandon Li (another great content creator) commenting under the A7siii vs bm6k video gushing over how much better the 6k image looked when it was clearly the sharper of the two images lol. But he also adds an effect in post too his Sony's footage to soften even more an already softer image. I say all this to say, you guys be contradicting yourselves when it comes to this topic. And if you're reading this and have a Sony camera, your image is already good enough. If you want a certain artistic look that's cool. Get you a filter. But don't let these RUclipsrs convince you that your image isn't good enough straight out of camera because of some bs narrative that none of them can agree on. Everyone want the latest gear, the highest resolutions, the sharpest lenses, but then want to soften the image to make it look like old cameras lol. Make it make sense people.

I don’t actually disagree with your comment to be fair mate. The issue is, a look is subjective 1:46 . And I’m trying to get a look that I personally find pleasing (for a certain type content I’m making. Other content I love Sony straight out and it’s insane). To me, the footage looks more ‘Filmic’ out of the BM. And it’s also a buzz word I guess for a title or just a word that people understand when talking about Looks of sensors. So I don’t think it’s baloney but you have some truth to this comment there’s no doubt 👍🏻
