Az ilyen átkötés nagyon nagy teljesítmény csökkenést okoz! Egyik szerkezet sem fog megfelelően üzemelni ami 3 fázisra lett tervezve. Ehhez kell egy megfelelő nagyságú frekvencia generátor ami 1fázis->3fázis üzemet tud! Ez így a 60-as évek buherációja!
note there is no EARTH wire used on this motor , if you wire up any motor make sure a fully earthed cable connected to the frame of the motor.

Commercially branded phase converters are available. Matching them up to the motor and wiring them up correctly is the key to getting the proper phase alignment. No loose capacitors hanging out, everything in a nice safe metal cabinet. NEC compliant.
Kinda easy to build. Never did anything like that before and I found d I instructions on the net...found a used 3 phase 7 hp motor for a hundred bucks, bought $50 worth of caps at a freght salvage, spent 4-5 hrs wiring and put it in a box...used it 2+ years on a 5hp lathe..it ran all day...got kind da lucky first try, 3 legs were within 4 volts...to buy the same deal cost a thou or more
Never mind those a welder with a 415 wining and a motor twice the size you want to run will give you a converter

Some countries, the authorities switch off one of the 3 phases, so that 3 phase motor loads should not work during peak hours (6pm to 10pm). With a brief shutdown the phases from L1, L2, L3 becomes L1, L2, L2 at 6pm and after another brief shutdown at 10pm again becomes L1. L2, L3. Some used to connect a capacitor (10mfd per amp and 20% above supply voltage rating) as in the video and run it during the peak hours. Heavier loads are started with additional capacitor with a push button to start. Regards.

What is the formula to figure what capacitor to use and will it last as long a cycle as the motor running on 3 phase? I usually have to use a vfd in the situation.
Yes correct, it will turn the motor but, you will only be able to drive a very light load. There is very little torque. There are only two ways to solve the problem; 1, buy a single phase motor or 2, buy a variable frequency drive.
It's only idea ... capacitor will only shift phase 120 degree ... vfd is a perfect option

By far the best way to do this in modern times is to purchase a variable frequency drive with single phase input. This phase converter stuff was great for 100 years until VFDs became available.
not everyone need or can afford a VFD
@@silentviewer.17yearsago65 a plain one with few features doesn't cost much more than the capacitors and contactors needed for a phase converter. If there is a need for much starting torque, then an "idler motor" is needed. Costs could easily be more than the VFD. And if you need speed control or a specific acceleration profile, forget it.

rotary phase converters are still great if you need to run large 30hp motors or multiple smaller motors at once. This is a good entry level project before building a rotary. Or a good way to test a motor at home.
Yes. I prefer to use single phase input to 3 phase output VFD. Motor performance much better.

If VFD's are out of your 'price or availability range', depending on motor size; the best way is to simply build a rotary phase converter using a similar-sized single-phase motor...no (minimal) torque loss that way.

I believe the capacitive reactance must be as close as possible to the values of motor winding ohms resistance
Then we can obtain C, Rw=1/(2πfc), where Rw= motor winding resistance, and C is capacitance, f= source frequency, π=pi.
How does this work?
Well in delta connection, the paticular winding paralleled with power has rated voltage on it. but one winding can't provide rotating megnetic field to start the motor, so with a capacitor in series with the other two windings the current in these windings has a phase difference, which produces a phase-shifted magnetic flux. When this magnetic flux gets mixed with the oroginal magnetic flux generated by the power-line-paralleled winding, a rotating magnetic field appears in the rotor, which gives starting torque. For this part you can refer to why single phase motors need a capacitor. Due to winding current limitation, the motor can only provide about 1/3 of the original rated power.
I'm not a pro but this explains things fine to me.
Accroding to experiences 20-30uF for every kW is useable, the guideline is to ensure that no winding is overloading by monitoring phase current.
Remember to only use non-polarized capacitor such as oil-paper capacitor or metal-film capacitor, do not use electrolytic capacitors or any polarized capacitors for the risk of cap explosion and fire., and the capacitor used should have a voltage rating no less than the power voltage.

Hi i want to ask something. After u run the motor for 2-3 minutes, do u realize about the motor is become hot easily? I check the amp, i got quite high amp (5A) after run using this connection. And 1 more thing, i actually want to convert the panasonic inverter washing machine to using universal board (no need to replace original 3 phase motor if using this trick). But i have a problem that, while in wash mode, the motor only run in one direction only (usually running in two direction on off, in wash mode). Can u help me if u have any idea. Tq.
You can use a single phase input , three phase output, can connect reverse and forward signals from the universal board to inverter

Maybe one of you clever people can help. I have a Northern Lights 25kW generator and I planned to run a 3-phase 240v 20kW induction motor from it. The documentation I had said my generator was 3-phase but I just found out it's actually a single-phase output!! Damn. Any ideas how I can connect that to the motor and still run it at about 20kW of power?
25 kW generator with single phase output , serious problem for you dear.
If your actual output load is about 5kw , you can use single phase input frequency inverter to give you 3 phase output.

up to 1.5kw need use two differents capacitors.

If converting 3phase machine in single phase then motor power increase or decrease karna chahiye.
Just go and buy a Variable Frequency Drive of double the amps /ampacity rating of the motor. This capacitor thing is only a quick check and test for a motor with no load attached, and usually the motor will not have the rated horsepower, unlike with a VFD that has true three phase driven by power fets from it's DC bus. Needless to say, with a VFD the consumption and amperage required will be higher.

On a 220/240vac single phase system you would us a 440v capacitor note you would only use this for small 3 phase motors

I dont know how to calculate but from experiences a 450VAC nonpolarized capacitor with 20microfarad capacitance should do the job, btw this makeshift can only provide 1/3 of the rated power.

Single phase motor using capacitor couple of seconds just for motor starting up only . So ... 3 phase motor depending capacitor constantly supply power for running not for working ! Isn't it ? How about tork ? Is this reliable and capacitor will generate heat and exploded in couples of minutes ...
What is the drawback of this method??
The main drawback of the "Steinmetz connection" is less starting torque.
Secondly, for larger motors the capacitor will be quite expensive.
