Whilst I talk about playing rock 'n' roll and rockabilly on acoustic guitar, these riffs and techniques sound great on both acoustic and electric guitar.
I've recently published a chord songbook called '50 from the Fifties' ...containing 50 classic rock 'n' roll songs from the 1950s. All of the songs can be played with just 4, easy open chords! It's ideal for both beginners and experienced guitarists who want to use the techniques I teach in my tutorials on some great rockin' tunes. It contains classic hits by the likes of Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, Fats Domino, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, and many more. If you'd like to buy a copy then search for 'Jez Quayle Rock and Roll Songbook' on the Amazon or Lulu.com websites.
* Here are a few of the many great rock 'n' roll/rockabilly recordings (mostly '12-bar blues' based) made in the key of A:
- Blue Suede Shoes - Carl Perkins / Elvis Presley / Eddie Cochran
- Boppin' the Blues - Carl Perkins
- Gone Gone Gone - Carl Perkins
- Lawdy Miss Clawdy - Elvis Presley
- Long Tall Sally - Eddie Cochran
- Looking For Someone to Love - Buddy Holly
- Matchbox - Carl Perkins / The Beatles
- Oh Boy! - Buddy Holly
- Peggy Sue - Buddy Holly
- Rock Around the Clock - Bill Haley & His Comets
- Rock 'n' Roll Ruby - Warren Smith
- Skinny Jim - Eddie Cochran
- That'll Be The Day - Buddy Holly
- That's All Right - Elvis Presley
- Twenty Flight Rock - Eddie Cochran
- Think It Over - Buddy Holly
- Ubangi Stomp - Warren Smith
- Uranium Rock - Warren Smith - Видеоклипы
This is just the stuff I've been hunting around for - thanks. Basic, simple stuff to get my rockNroll guitar career kicked off (I'm 67). Brilliant !!
Thanks very much! It's never too later to start a rock 'n' roll career. 👍
Never too late to start!
Can we form a band, I’m 76?
What A FIND! WHAT A SERVICE YOU HAVE GIVEN! - I have watched and practiced a LOT of guitar tutorials over the years and taken a lot of paid internet and in-person lessons but I have seldom if ever seen instruction this good. You packed more into this 18 minutes than anything I have seen. It is the kind of thing that gives so much variation in sound with minor variations that it motivates guitar players to keep playing. -- Thanks for the clear instruction.
Thanks very much for those positive words Barry! I'm very pleased you've found my tutorial so useful.
Thrash metal guitarist here. I'm trapped in box of my own limitations. Time to break out the box and learn my roots. Expand my play style. So hello there... you sir are now my new teacher. I have subbed and will be studying your videos everyday after work. Your playing amazes me. I want your sound. Also, I'll be passing these lessons on to my own students. God bless, and have a great day sir.
Thanks very much! I’m really glad you’re enjoying my videos and getting something useful from them.
Good Old Rock " N " Roll will always be around, Thank you Sir.

Thanks very much Thomas! You’re NEVER too old to rock and roll! - Jez
Thomas: So there is someone older than I am, following along. Wow!
I learned more from you in less than 20 minutes than hours spent trying to just find things explained this simply. I’m checking out the rest of your vids and have subscribed without hesitation.

Hi Churat! Glad you like it.

Just received your new 50 from the Fifties songbook. Took a month to get thru Amazon, but absolutely worth it. Cords, rhythms, and blues bars all explained. So much material in one place and just goes so perfect with all your You Tube videos. You have shared so much. What a score for me. Thanks so much!
Hi Steve! That's great. Sorry it took so long to arrive. I'm really pleased you like it. If you fancy leave a few words like those in an Amazon review, I'd really appreciate it. Best wishes from England, Jez
I've now downloaded many of your video tutorials and find them really well done. I also have your book which I purchased after watching your tutorials. Thanks for your time and excellent work.
Hi Dale. I'm really pleased you're finding my videos and songbook useful. Thanks for those kind words. Keep on rockin'! - Jez
I love this Jez, I only just found you in my recs, and I have to say you are one of the most natural, unassuming and easy to follow guitar tutors I have been able to find online, I love in particular that I can always see both of your hands, and without having to be a picture in picture which I often find distracting and hard to connect and follow with the strum, I am definitely going to try playing along with you as soon as I have tuned my guitar, which has been somewhat dormant through these months of lockdown that I have not been able to meet and play with my regular Guitar Group, Best wishes Julie
Thanks very much for those lovely words of support Julie! I'm glad you like my teaching style. Yes, get that guitar tuned! - Jez
Excellent tutorial, thanks, Jez. And I’m delighted to see that it’s “No 1” ... looking forward to more of the same. Best wishes, Dave.
Thanks very much Dave! 😀 Are you playing guitar again?
Rock 'n' Roll Songbook I’m trying to, Jez, TRYING TO, which is why I’m so pleased to see your tutorial. Best wishes from the rock.
Well, have fun with that. How's it going on the island with COVID-19? Best wishes from 'God's own (rainy) country' :D
You are the BEST! So scholastic and doing everything in such a nice tempo. Thank You!
Wow, thanks very much Mikael!
I taught that stuff to my 5yo son already and now he get's started with rockin :-) The only exemption is that I taught him power chords to easy the first steps. I can really recommend this because this get's your beginner fingers moveable and stretchy and you achieve first successes very quick :-)
Great! I'd love to see a video of a 5-year-old playing rock 'n' roll like this. This is the first in a series of tutorial videos I have planned, so stay tuned to learn loads more rock 'n' roll/rockabilly guitar techniques that build on what I teach in this video.
You're taking this youtube self taught improving beginner towards intermediate level. Great stuff and loving the 50s era, boomers excluded.
That's great! Keep it up. 😁
This is an absolutely superb and informative lesson, thanks so much, Jez, and keep up the good work !
Thanks very much Chris! I'm glad you found my video useful.

Thanks very much Zaphod!
Great tutorial Jez, well explain looking forward to more of your video's love rock n roll save tabs.
Thanks very much Brian! 🙂
Good Teacher: просто понятно, доступно!
Thank you.
Thanks very much Alex!
Playing an A major Buddy's way makes it a lot easier to transition between A, D, and A7. I was struggling with the solo on Peggy Sue where on the A chord right before he goes back to E he lifts his finger off and back on the b string second fret{A sus2}. It's a lot easier to do with your middle finger than your pinky. I think I'm going to start fingering A the alternative way from now on, thanks.
Fantastic lesson. Understandable for beginners as well as for both non-English speakers.
Thanks very much! That's good to know.
Just got your book and these lessons are filling some gaps for me, Thank you very much, Jez!
Thanks for the book purchase Kim. I’m really glad you’re finding my videos useful.
