Tutorial #2 - Chuck Berry Rock 'n' Roll Riff - Jez Quayle

  • In this video I teach how to play and use one of the most popular riffs in rock 'n' roll. If you want to play rock 'n' roll in a band, or one-man-one-guitar rock 'n' roll as I often do on this channel, it's one of the 'go to' guitar riffs.
If you like this video, you might also like my 'How to Play Roll Over Beethoven'' lead guitar tutorial.
    • How To Play 'Roll Over...
...and my 'How to Play the Intro to Johnny B. Goode' lead guitar tutorial (coming soon!):
    • How to Play the Intro ...
You can hear versions of the boogie, rhythm riff I teach in this video on recordings from the 1950s through to the present day. It's really a movable version of the 'first position' riffs I introduced in Tutorial #1, and what I teach here builds on some of the ideas presented in that earlier video.
Guitarists will often refer to this as the 'Chuck Berry riff', since it was used by Chuck on so many of his classic records, including: 'Johnny B Goode'; 'Carol'; 'Sweet Little Sixteen'; 'Let It Rock'; 'Little Queenie'; and 'School Days'.
Eddie Cochran, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Status Quo, and many others, have used this riff, not only to play Chuck Berry songs, but on any songs needing a hard-driving, rockin' guitar sound. You'll hear it on The Beatles' recordings of 'Long Tall Sally' and 'Roll Over Beethoven', as well as their own compositions, 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' and 'Come Together'. You'll hear it on Status Quo's recordings of 'Caroline' and 'Paper Plane'. Eddie Cochran used it on 'Somethin' Else', and you'll hear on his live recordings of 'Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On' and 'Sweet Little Sixteen'. The Rolling Stones' used it on their covers of 'Route 66' and 'Carol', as well as their own numbers, 'Brown Sugar' and 'It's Only Rock 'n' Roll'. I use the riff to play the songs of Little Richard, Eddie Cochran, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc., and of course, Chuck Berry numbers.
Here's a contents list (with times) so you can jump to topics if you wish to:
    - Demonstration: Using the riff to play Chuck Berry's 'Roll Over Beethoven' in the key of C - 0:03
    - Using the riff to play 12-bar blues in A - 01:37
    - Playing the riff on the 5th fret in place of an A chord - 01:44
    - Playing the riff on the 10th fret in place of a D chord - 04:42
    - A variation to the riff (as used by George Harrison) - 05:07
    - Playing the riff on the 5th fret in place of a D chord - 06:08
    - Playing the riff on the 7th fret in place of an E chord - 07:26
    - Using the riff to play 12-bar blues in E - 07:52
    - Learning the notes on the 5th and 6th strings - 08:43
    - Demonstration: Using the riff to play Little Richard's 'Long Tall Sally' in the key of A - 09:54
I've recently published a chord songbook called '50 from the Fifties' ...containing 50 classic rock 'n' roll songs from the 1950s. All of the songs can be played with just 4, easy open chords! It's ideal for both beginners and experienced guitarists who want to use the techniques I teach in my tutorials on some great rockin' tunes. It contains classic hits by the likes of Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, Fats Domino, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, and many more. If you'd like to buy a copy then search for 'Jez Quayle Rock and Roll Songbook' on the Amazon or Lulu.com websites.

So just the other day someone noticed my guitars hanging on my wall and asked what music I like to play, I said (in spanish) 1950’s rock and roll. Yet I haven’t touched my guitars since I was in my twenties!!! Then I found you bro! My father who grew up in the 50’s taught me these riffs when I was a teenager but I never had them explain to me. I just followed his lead and sang along. He’s gone now and I am glad your vids have brought me back to playing some guitar again!!!! Thanks !!!!

Thanks Chris! I'm only hitting the bass strings (4th, 5th and 6th) with my pick when playing this stuff -- you need to angle your pick so that you don't catch the higher strings. But yes, I suppose I do touch the higher strings (which stops them ring out) with my first finger as it reaches over to the bass strings. I hope that makes sense! - Jez

How do I improve dexterity? I can’t imagine moving my fingers like that.

    • @RocknRollSongbook
      @RocknRollSongbook  3 года назад +3

It's difficult to give a short answer to that question. Playing scales or instrumental pieces that require you to use all four fingers independently is a good idea. If playing songs using open chords, try to play songs in several different keys, so you end up using your fingers differently all the time. Similarly, whilst three chord songs are great, you can improve dexterity by playing songs that have five or more chords. Try to learn and practice any new things slowly and carefully. Lots and lots of repetition of new things you learn is necessary. It probably gets more difficult to improve finger dexterity as you get older, but it can be done.
