I am completely impressed with Kelly's voice and his renditions of the ELO hits he helped create. The only thing wrong with this picture is that he is no longer with us. RIP, Kelly.
This live performance shows just how the entire sound of ELO went in two different directions. Jeff lost both the beautiful orchestrations and voices of Kelly, Bev and Richard whilst ELO Part II lost Jeff's voice and rock. It saddens me that the immense glory of ELO in its heyday wasn't fully recaptured by either. Jeff needed his orchestra and his band, the band and the orchestra needed Jeff.
@@Oh_I_Will : I’m afraid Jeff holds the Trump card here what people are not stating in these comments is that without Jeff there would be no E L O! as he was the composer and writer of all the songs with the exception of roll over….JEFF LYNNE WROTE ALL THE FIUCKIN SONGS FOR CHRIST SAKES!

Kelly Groucutt was only a paid musician of ELO who happily signed his contract every year as a paid musician. When he quit his job in 1983 with ELO, he sued Jeff Lynne for back royalties. Like Jeff Lynne said, "Kelly was never a member of ELO but a paid musician who happily signed his contract every year as a paid musician." They did settle out of court for 300,000 pounds or $450,000 US dollars. RIP Kelly.

@@GNF54 ; interesting info. OK! It says reason that Kelly would’ve written something during his tenure with E L O! He was very talented. That was E L O at its best.! Do you know exactly what his contribution was to that song?
Kelly quit because his pay slightly decreased which wasn’t exactly Jeff’s fault since Jeff never controlled who was paid and the amount they were paid in, so fourth only finding out after suing Jeff, into which after forming ELO Part 2, he snuck in an acknowledgement of that it wasn’t Jeff’s fault in ELO Part 2’s version of Midnight blue where a line reads “You say you’re sorry but you’re really not to blame”. Sad tale of how one change broke up one of the most iconic bands there was.
ELO’s manager at the time, Don, was an evil fraud who called himself a “business man” and he decided to decrease Kelly’s pay and make Jeff move him to Bass instead of backup vocals as he usually was both before, Kelly was ofcourse not happy and left the band after this change and decided to sue Jeff for ‘unpaid royalties’ as he thought it was Jeff who had done this choice to decrease his pay, but in the end had found out that it wasn’t Jeff’s choice due to it stating that the manager of the band makes all those choices. Also if i need to imply that after Kelly left the band launched the lawsuit, he was blacklisted by their manager, Don, and didn’t have a chance at all of rejoining ELO, after this the band decided to split up and part their ways, this was also pushed by the fact that Jeff lost interest in touring as well. But it is safe to say that the lawsuit was settled and everyone in the band left on neutral terms. Kelly, Bev and Mik also decided to join together and create ‘ELO part 2’ (which was renamed to ‘Orkestra’ shortly after due to copyright reasons) also while Kelly managed his own band named after himself, so after the short breakup, everyone presumably left all on good terms with eachother.
@@Despon ELO Pt 2 was changed only bc Bev left the lineup and those remaining couldn’t carry on due to what you implied as copyright/band name/ownership reasons
These guys were essential parts of ELO, but without Jeff Lynne and his voice they're a talented cover band. I understand they have to make money and care for their families, but why can't they make all-new material instead of re-recording Lynne songs?
They did release two albums of original material and they did play their original material live. They didn't re-record any songs by Jeff Lynne. They usually played two sets. The first set consisted of original material, the second set was old ELO material. They played the old ELO material because that's what the audience wanted hear. And they played songs that the band in it's previous incarnation had never played on-stage anymore. They covered pretty much the entire catalog. Bev Bevan (a founding member of ELO) formed Electric Light Orchestra Pt. 2 because Lynne refused to record another ELO album and didn't want to continue or reform the group (which by the time of the last ELO album the band didn't consist of any of the original or "classic line-up" members, only Jeff Lynne. Seriously, he was the only member on the last ELO album). People wanted to hear the Electric Light Orchestra again, so Bev tried his best to get as many of the original and classic line-up members as he could. He even tried to get Roy Wood. He and Lynne had to compromise over whether Bevan could use the name Electric Light Orchestra (Bevan had 50% of the rights of the name as did Lynne). That's why there was no big deal made of it, they simply compromised and the compromise was that Bev and the rest of the group would have to call the group Electric Light Orchestra Part 2. Considering that the ELO pt. 2 contained many of the former members; Bev Bevan, Kelly Groucutt, Mik Kaminski, Hugh McDowell & Lou Clark. I'd say that they pretty much were ELO minus two (Lynne and Tandy). The closest that you were going to get to seeing the Electric Light Orchestra.
Brian McGuire You did a good job of teaching Hector what he must have missed out on as he didn't seem to understand what ELO Part 2 was about and what they did.
