RIP Kelly Groucutt. Say what you want about his singing but he kept ELO alive during the late eighties thru the nineties for the fans. Don't forget he was the backing vocals for Jeff Lynne and ELO. Rest in Peace Kelly!
Kelly Grocutt was wonderful. No time for Jeff Lynn anymore, altho I acknowledge he did write some of the songs, but who kept them going, ELO Part 2. RIP Kelly Grocutt.
My first rock concert was ELO in 1977, the "spaceship" tour. I was only 13 years old when my mother took me and my younger sister to see them. IT WAS AWESOME FOLKS! Still have the ticket stub, they were actually printed with raised ink, not some souless computer generated ticket.
I envy you. I was 13 in 1977 too and grew up in a musical family with my older brother and his band inspired by Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath and my other older brother, his rival being inspired by The Beatles and ELO. The Beatles and ELO have been my main inspiration ever since.
If I was Jeff Lynne watching this.. I would be proud as F@$@ to see my songs performed so beautifully and with such passion and with a full orchestra as they surely were intended to be heard?? ..??
I know no history of E.L.O. or Jeff Lynne, so my comment is completely without bias. This was a beautiful performance. The person responsible for the soundboard and mixer must have had two dozen hands!
Kerry added such range vocally to ELO and I feel so blessed to see THE ORCHESTRA perform in my local town some years back! It is still one of the greatest live shows I have experienced! Thank you for posting this clip!
I always loved Kelley's voice. I got to see him in the late 1990s in LA, and met him, Bev and Mik after the show. It was an amazing show. They just blasted that venue to Kingdom come. Way more rocking energy than the shows I saw with Jeff Lynne. I guess when the leader is absent the players just break loose and go rebel.
For those who don't know - ELO Part II and the Orchestra are the same band. It is just a name change for legal reasons. The name change came about the time Bev retired so they had to hire a new drummer, then Kelly died so they had to replace him as well, and so on etc. I say he was one of the best parts of ELO, as Jeff had him sing on almost everything - which created the sound we all know as ELO vocals. And his own work is brilliant as well.
Sure, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is a sham, but it is still a travesty that Kelly was not inducted as a member of ELO. His voice and bass playing were integral to all of their most successful albums.
Real strings? Oh man, if only Jeff would have gotten off of his throne and toured WITH Kelly and a full string section. (sigh) I guess this is the best we'll ever have.
detroitjoeturner he was producing the last 2 Beatles songs around this era .Producing many other artists and working on his on solo album .Oh and the traveling Wilburies
@phoobingcamel You are so right, Kelly really deserved much more recognition and admiration that he ever received. He was the best part of ELO and was amazing in everything he did.
On this day in 1980 {August 8th} the Olivia Newton-John movie "Xanadu" opened in theaters across the U.S.A. and Canada... Five songs featured in the film made Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; "I'm Alive" by the Electric Light Orchestra {#16}, "Magic" by Newton-John {#1 for 4 weeks}, "Suddenly" by Newton-John & Cliff Richard {#20}, "All Over The World" by E.L.O. {#13}, and "Xanadu" by Newton-John & E.L.O. {#8}...
Wow, thanks so much for posting this! I'm Alive is one of my favourite E.L.O. songs and I always hoped I'd see Part 2/The Orchestra do it live some time. And, as usual, Kelly here gave it his inimitable best. One of the best voices in the business, such a shame he didn't get more recognition
You have to agree that many components made ELO what it was! Jeff Lynne is a writing genus...no doubt! However, the strings and Kelly also made the band as it was and helped create the sound. Could you picture anyone else playing bass or doing those kind of backup vocals like Kelly did? I have seen recent clips of Jeff doing ELO songs but they are missing the back-bone of the songs...the remainder of the band!
Although I completely get the comments about Jeff Lynne's legendary dickishness, I can't agree that this performance doesn't suffer from the absence of his musical directorship and vocals. While his vocal chops aren't virtuoso, they are distinct and pleasing to the ear of many.
Can't agree that Jeff Lynne has legendary dickishness. The fact is, we don't really know what happened to cause the fall outs. Only the people involved do.
Must be the last time they were known as ELO Part II before Jeff Lynne forced them to change their name to The Orchestra. Bev Bevan is not here, so it must be after he quit and sold his name rights back to Jeff. That, or they put the wrong name on the video.
You would have had to see them live once I seen them in the New Worlds Record Tour I could not get enough of them. The Out Of The Blue Tour was the swan song for some of the group I seen them again three more times always with new people in the band. The Zoom Concert was well put together for the great sound they had back then I have the concert in Blu-Ray it sounds great but the best to me is still the guys left me wanting for more back in the 70's.
Electric Light Orchestra Part Two bardzo dobrze interpretuje piosenki przeboje wszechczasów zespołu Electric Light Orchestra Jeffa Lynne ,mam kilka płyt CD i można ich słuchać i są bardzo melodyjne
This lead singer reminds me of the lead singer of Tool. Then I thought this what he'll look like by the time Tool releases another record. But in all seriousness the more I hear ELO the more I love them.
+DJdext Have you checked out Elos earlist albums and the (very ELO sounding) last Move album? Experimental with baroque eliments, maybe, maybe not for you ?I've only just descovered Tool ( after a tip off) and like em.

Kelly was awesome, but damn if he didn't make some questionable fashion choices. Jeff was smart in that he always has, and will look the same as he did during the golden years. The visual disconnect of what you think of when you hear music from a certain period being performed by people who you don't think look very close to the image you have in your head is disappointing. It's like Fat Elvis versus young Elvis. The skills are there, but it just makes you feel old. If you make it, don't change.
Jeff has signed a contract with Columbia Records for a new ELO album soon Yea, it's only taken 15 years but that seems to be have Jeff likes it, I think it was 11 years between Armchair Theater and Zoom:-)
He did it for 16 years and got burned out. Would have ended a few years earlier but his contract required him to put out more albums. Once freed of the ELO contract, Jeff had an incredibly busy decade - Wilbury's, Armchair Theatre, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Beatles, Del Shannon, McCartney and of course Harrison. Basically, he got to work with all of his musical heroes.
Tak. A Jeff był i jest legendą. Razem tworzyli coś niepowtarzalnego. I jak dla mnie to lepiej brzmi Jeff Lynne's ELO niż ELO part 2 bez Jeffa. To on był spiritus movens zespołu. Bez niego to nie to, co by kto nie mówił. Aczkolwiek płyta studyjna na której Jeff sobie sam wszystko zagrał nie brzmi tak dobrze. Natomiast Wembley or bust świetnie.
@@ewita41 i tu się nie zgodzę. Klimat to wszyscy razem. Kelly w chorkach i w tle.

he had quit in 1986, but 3 years later Bev wanted to do more, but jeff didn't, so he continued on without him, creating Electric light orchestara Part II. they continued on for about 10 years until Bev quit and sold his name rights to Jeff lynne. Despite Bev stating the band had broken up, the rest of them wanted to continue so they got a new drummer(featured in this video) and continued on. However, Jeff lynne forced the band to stop calling themselves Electric Light Orchestra. So they changed their name to Orchestra, because Kelly Groucutt(the bass guitarist and lead singer) and Mik Kaminski(the guy with the blue violin) had a band they created in 1986 until the early early 90s called OrKestra.
RIP Kelly Groucutt. Say what you want about his singing but he kept ELO alive during the late eighties thru the nineties for the fans. Don't forget he was the backing vocals for Jeff Lynne and ELO. Rest in Peace Kelly!
I like his voice and always liked his BGVs and alternate lead vocals on ELO projects.
Kelly Grocutt was wonderful. No time for Jeff Lynn anymore, altho I acknowledge he did write some of the songs, but who kept them going, ELO Part 2. RIP Kelly Grocutt.
Any man who can nail the aria part in Rockaria! is ok in my book. And he's a bassist also.
he cant do falsetto at all which is a requisite to sing elo songs
he couldny hit any high notes.. go get your hearing tested at Costco.
Kelly Groucutt's voice was so beautiful! and he was such an important part of the original ELO sound.
And he seemed so kind. 🩵
There's nothing that Kelly couldn't do to match Jeff Lynne's vocals, he was the backbone of ELO! Also a great bassist! RIP Kelly
Jeff Lynne and Kelly's vocals blended together beautifully.
Kelly's unique, high harmony vocals made ELO songs truly shine.
CK Kim No Jeff Lynne did

This what Jeff wanted in the 70s when they performed live
what a lovely man kelly was all ways had time for the fans after the gig R.I.P old friend
yes we cannot say ELO without Jeff Lynne but also we cannot imagine ELO's true sound without Kelly Groucutt and Louise Clark with his string section.
And kellyi didnt ever need Jeff to sound good either. Kelly did better without Jeff just like the rest of them did better without Jeff..
Yes! Kelly 🩵
Boy do I love this mix of these three songs done by Kelly and band... Keeps coming back to watch this. You can see they`re having fun.
ELO FOREVER!

Jeff and Kelly , voices made in Heaven ❤
I agree, Jeff and Kelly were the best music duo ever!
On top of everything, Kelly looks like he's having fun here.
He may be having fun but they sound awful
Thank you Kelly and group for this mix of three of my favorite songs of all time. Goes to my heart directly. You are missed.

Saw them in July 1997 in San Diego. It was awesome!
Great to hear I'm Alive & Xanadu performed live by Kelly, Eric, Mik & co. Many thanks for posting this pro-shot video footage!
(And contained most of the members of the original ELO, plus some really famous folks from other corners of the music universe for that matter).
Although I completely get the comments about Jeff Lynne's legendary dickishness, I can't agree that this performance doesn't suffer from the absence of his musical directorship and vocals. While his vocal chops aren't virtuoso, they are distinct and pleasing to the ear of many.
That and the fact that sooo many people have heard his big songs sooo many times that someone else's voice singing them doesn't sound quite right
burpo Dickishness? Jeff Lynne is a super cool a humble guy. I've had the pleasure of meeting him and talking to him for a while.
Can't agree that Jeff Lynne has legendary dickishness. The fact is, we don't really know what happened to cause the fall outs. Only the people involved do.
I don't mind hearing someone else do these songs. I've always thought Jeff's voice, and the way he produces it, sounds a little odd.
there's no question that he is missed. otoh one day he will be gone. the fact that his songs have their own survivability is good news.
