The Gibson Spotlight Special is my all time favorite guitar model - it even trumps the "The Les Paul" (though the wine red ones are really cool! ruclips.net/video/a1dfn_e2u7w/видео.html) There were a lot of stories behind my collection of spotlights, maybe on day I will share the stories of my travels if you are interested in them
I hope you never sell it. Considering how much they are going up in price and becoming more scarce, as time goes on, it’ll make it very difficult for you to obtain another very nice one without breaking the bank and spending more than what you would want. Best to just hang on to it, unless another guitar becomes your absolute number one favorite guitar.
I just watched your video and was surprised to see my Gibson Spotlight Special #84 001. Although 1984 is never really talked about, this is the real thing. This guitar's quality is so much more superior than any other Gibson made from the year on. And the reissues are nothing close to the originals. In fact no Gibson reissue is any close to the original.
I find when you learn more about a guitar - it's history and lore - that is when you can really fall in love with them. It's like dating - sure they can look nice and play well, but when you really KNOW them is when you can truly appreciate them for all that they are. Thanks for watching!
The Trogly's Guitar Show I couldn’t agree more. I always liked how they looked but never got into them. I am also very broke and they are quite pricey. That beat up Les Paul you did was the one that sold me on Gibson. I must save up to get a Norlin now.
Collecting has never been the same for me after selling them. Many of them ended up overseas, so it is unlikely I will ever get them back thanks to CITES laws...
one day i'll own one, it'll be great to play. A Guitar is meant to sing so i am never scared to play it and put one through it's pacing. Beautiful. It'd be a bad ass piece
I can see why you like those they even have a late 70s early 80s vibe to them ,My Gibson is a 2006 green flame gt not as rare as the spotlights but were only made for a year.My impression before i got excited about lps as that Gibson was stuffy but they are really creative sometimes to their detriment.
From what I know they were just left over maple top stock, not necessarily from the 50's, just what was around the old factory. They weren't cut short, they just were just pieces that weren't big enough. Keep in mind they made non 2-piece in the 50s to 80s, that a lot of wood that may get set aside.
I've just seen video this for the first time. I agree, that is a beautiful guitar especially that particular one. I'm still looking for my first Gibson Les Paul to own and maybe have found the model I like most. Now to get that crazy amount of money together.
Those are beautiful guitars! I can see why you would love it so. Never been a Gibson fan due to the price and availability issue. But your videos are slowly changing that. Really enjoy the history, information, trivia, pictures, etc. so many things I never knew about before. So, Thank You! Was curious about where you get your information from. Interested in history of left handed models. Whether they were ever produced, how many, that sort of thing. I like hunting unicorns!
Nice to see this is your favorite, very origonal. I learned allot... Never knew of these. I currently own 1 of my dream Les Pauls...always wanted a Gold Top with a light back and a bigsby and 57 classic pickups. And luckily for me, my Local Canadian music store chain (long and mquade) had a special edition run of bigsby gold tops in 2017.
I've always loved the natural finish on LPs. They should offer it more often. I thought about "converting" my wine red '89 Custom.....but I'm sure I would regret it.
My favorite Les Paul is my 2009 Standard lol. Its has a 50s neck, kinda rare on a standard, and its the best playing and sounding les paul i have ever owned
Jason Johnson haha not even that. Standing is fine for me, fairly young still. Just never felt comfortable sitting down with them. I do still love my LPJs.
That maple top is VERY OLD. It’s dark golden color and tight grain tell the story. I’m going to say this one you’re holding is wood that is from the 50s. That’s the good maple and it’s hard to find. It’s all gone!
Thank you very much for all the information you provided about this guitar. I do own the exactly same guitar. I didn't know this guitar is such a collector item. By the way, I paid about $800 about 20 years ago. I think I'm going to keep this guitar a little bit longer.
Are all these heavier 9+lbs?What do you believe makes them sound so good -wood choice ,tenon length, pickups + the big fat necks and angle? Trying to correlate what makes a good Les Paul-seems easier to find good sounding fenders comparatively. Any thoughts on the physics of this model? Maple tends to be reflective and accentuates the bass and treble frequencies while mahogany has strong midrange quality. Neck-wood and tension tends to make them ring-that balance of wood, tension and transference and quality pickups seems to make great one ‘Great’ and its maybe that’s why they are far and fewer. There is much more going on with all these joints and hardware. Do you know if they were made with hide glue? Wood glue tends to dampen tone. I know, I know, wading through the weeds but like you said, you can feel it through the guitar when you strum them. I’m mainly an acoustic player so I’m sensitive to electrics unplugged -so all things being equal, i.e good pickups/quality pots, a great Les Paul starts with great wood and neck tension. It’s even more important with the shorter scale and maybe why there’s fewer winners when it comes to this model. My two cents looking for a nickel?
If it was meant to be a neck-through guitar the center strip would have been a little wider so the tailpiece and bridge posts would have been drilled into the center block. Otherwise, it negates the tone and vibration advantage a neck-through guitar has.
Hey Trogly, i own a 2016 faded studio with burst bucker pro3 on it.What do you think about that series?.Nowdays fadeds are not called as studio, honestly it feels like something Gary Moore would play.I appreciate your honest thoughts.
I haven't had a modern one, but I had a 2000s faded studio. They are a good option for someone that just needs a good playing guitar and don't care about the fancy gloss finish. I actually prefer the faded finish feel, but like the gloss finish look. Good guitars!
You really have to wonder what kind of money Trogly comes from (or how he got such an awesome job straight out of highschool) that he could afford multiple >$10,000 guitars at 20.
Good luck to him however it came about. Seems like an intelligent, reserved and thoughtful person. I had a bit of an inheritance when I was about 20, I believe the bible illustrated the morals and pitfalls of my experience in the story of "the prodigal son". I was a fool and my money soon parted. Trog's has got it together, a young family man putting together a home and career. I love his work collecting and documenting Les Paul's.
To get the saddles at the proper place for intonation. If you look at guitars with a 'straight' bridge, the saddles are usually set up with the treble saddles closer to the headstock than the bass side.
Maybe I missed it but when was the last production year for these? I could have sworn they were made no later than the early 1990's. Must be thinking about something else. I would give up that kind of cash for one of those.
Hey ive seen most of your guitar have the tune o matic bridge screws pointing towards the tail piece instead of the pickups. Do you have a reason for that?
I own 83 023 ANT. There is a member on the Les Paul forum who worked for Gibson in 1983 building guitars. He kept detailed records of the serial numbers on the guitars he built, and yes he did build some Spotlights that had the 84 prefix. Long time follower, first time I see this video, dude, I really hope you got to recover any of those diaries by now!
God, what a collection!!! You must still shed tears for having to sell such an amazing array of Gibsons.
Collecting has never been the same for me after selling them. Many of them ended up overseas, so it is unlikely I will ever get them back thanks to CITES laws...
Spotlights are the Holy Grail of Les Pauls in my opinion. Had an ANT a years back that I sold a few tears back. Regret it much.
I think my all time fav is "The Les Paul"....all wood, so beautiful!
Donovan Forsythe you are right they are works of art just amazing especially the wine red the les Paul!
My memory, The LP ¥1000000 at that time. And bad condition 60LP ¥1300000. In Tokyo.
It’s good having these creations . From manufacturing errors .
They look super pretty . And add some new flavours too the collection .

Just a odd bit of trivia the Chet Atkins CE and CEC had brown binding and brown backplates.
The case at 2:50 wow🎩🎩🎩💙💙💙 I really like that blue😍
Love the wood grain on that Guitar
I’ve had Les Pauls since 1970 and I’ve never asked anyone this question Why is the bridge always on an angle instead of straight across?
To get the saddles at the proper place for intonation. If you look at guitars with a 'straight' bridge, the saddles are usually set up with the treble saddles closer to the headstock than the bass side.
Thank you I’ve always wondered
If I had the money, would custom order one, except with a maple neck and some other modifications.
How often do players versions of these come onto the market... And what is a fair price for one in players condition?

And they’ll be sitting for a long time haha

Those are cool for sure. Thanks
Nice

Hey ive seen most of your guitar have the tune o matic bridge screws pointing towards the tail piece instead of the pickups. Do you have a reason for that?

Is this a set through or neckthrough?
Here hunny you gave birth to our child have a spot light special

If you tracked all the serial numbers that you found (and I have a feeling that you did), then the German Tank Problem can help estimate how many were made: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_tank_problem
For example, if you have seen 15 of these and the highest serial number you've seen is 180, they made an estimated (180+180/15+1) = 193 of that model.
