The Trogly's Guitar Show Lots a info Professor . I'm like a student in a college course ! These Gibson's are whole different animal then my Fender guitars.
Your response to relist the guitar with a proper description avoiding a return was simply first rate - rare to see anyone attempt to solve an problem creatively. Bravo!
Trogly, Just a tip, if you get a maxed truss rod again, i just put another small washer, or another moon washer in between the nut and standard washer. Maybe not the best fix, but it'll gain the neck more time. Sometimes that just comes from the moon washer compressing the soft fibers of the wood underneath it. I've had a couple 70s necks like that. Worked fine. Fixed the problem. If the truss rod is broken it'll just turn free.
A twist is fixable. But it involves stripping the finish off the neck applying steam to the bare wood and forcing just enough opposite twist into a well clamped guitar. Then just wait until the wood is dry. Its a laborious task, but it does work. You could take it one step farther and steam off the fret board and replace the truss rod as well....
Guitar sounds great, man. I'd take the haunting as part of its character. Maybe a tinge microphonic, but if that neck twist isn't killing it for you then, let it be. Lovely instrument, and not bad for a Standard.
I have a marlin slammer. Got burgled. 2 weeks later, l was just sat at home, stood up, got my car keys, drove 5 miles to a second hand shop. And there was my guitar and amp in the window. Got it back. Still have it after 30 years.
I got ripped too. They got me for a Pre war Gibson banjo, a Morgan Monroe banjo, Alvarez Yairi D body, and a early 70's Guild F212 12 string. Theif took them to a pawn shop. However, I didn't find out which shop till much later, then it was too late. Damn thieves!
I know people who want all original stuff might not like it but I’ve always thought the wine red with gold hardware and black plastics is a great look for a Les Paul. It’s one of my absolute favorite looks for a LP although gold hardware doesn’t hold up great if you play one a lot.

I don’t get why it’s such a problem? I understand that it was (accidentally) falsely advertised and he didn’t get what he paid for it - and the neck issue. But... it’s such a beautiful piece. The dark, crimson/blood nebula top, the gold hardware and black plastics look SOOOO good altogether, and it sounds like a classic Les Paul, with the special sound that humbuckers had in the 70’s. Honestly, all I care - it sounds awesome! As long it stays in tune up till 15 fret, I would buy this immidiately for that price. Plus, the color combination is just amazing!
That's a real shame about the neck 'cos it sounds great to me. The T-tops are really articulate & clear sounding, plus the guitar looks totally cool. I missed out on a '73 LP Standard a couple of weeks ago. It had been factory routed for a third pick-up & unfortunately it had had a neck repair (a very good one though, several yrs earlier) but it still had the original T-tops & everything else (the seller had put a 490R in the middle), plus a really gorgeous 3-piece maple top in original sunburst finish. It sold for just £1300 on eBay (around $1700 US) but I got in a rather heated ahem....'debate' with my better half over my buying 'yet another' guitar & lost track of the time lol.

Back then little case candy so I saved little Gibson manual and tags hug on the with pipe cleaners. Thanks for the vids. Yea I plan to be buried with mine but I plan on that being 25-30 more years. I'll leave instructions they can dig them up once they are 100 years old. 46 years now and I live say 30 more they'll stay with me 20 years In the grave. Now you talk about haunted two les Pauls 100 years old been in the grave 25 years.

No Brazillian rosewood in that guitar. IndianrRosewood fingerboard, maple top with some flame. Loosen off the truss rod all the way. 'back from Nam in 75' ? hmm thats not too likely. US involvement mostly ended in 73. there were a few americans still there in 75 but not really troops.
If it were ever re-fretted, that could cause it. The barbs on the fret wire have to be milled to match the fret slot. Stew Mac has an excellent video on YT of this.
It sounds pretty good, but it doesn't sound really THAT great. Honestly I'd probably use it as a live guitar depending on how it felt to my hands or maybe just hang it on a wall honestly. It really does have a beautiful and unique flame/quilt whatever you wanna call it.
Knowing all the issues that it has I still think it has an awesome but yet unique sound for a Les Paul it doesn't quite sound like any other Les Paul I've heard
I'm guessing that the truss rod issue can be remedied. Before any serious "surgery" I would find a luthier/repair guy (older guys know about this) that has (preferably) a heat clamp for the neck---a non-heated clamp might do the trick but a heated one works successfully more often. Sometimes the guitar will need to stay clamped for a month or several months BUT I have had several valuable/vintage Gibson necks brought back to pretty much perfect using this method.
I remember gold hardware on sunburst Les Paul when I started playing guitar, way back in the day, gold hardware was in vogue back then 1977-1979 my buddy had thee "wine" Les Paul, yup chrome hardware... Yes, I have seen that guitar... I saw that guitar list on reverb three years ago for 2000...
Such a cool guitar though still. I'd stick some "bridge cable" strings on the low side of the neck, and let it sit a while to see what happens. If I could get some of the twist out, then I'd have my tech: do a fret job (whatever he deemed appropriate), change all the gold back to chrome, put on my favorite locking tuners, fit it with a custom brass nut, and set it up for me to play on the road, and (hopefully) the studio. You know... in a perfect world and all.
you mean used guitars for those prices. I have a 77 Standard that I bought new in 78. The list price was $749 - I knew the store owner and got it for $400, which he told me was cost. I was working at McDonalds for $2.85/hr. You do the math. ;)
I know this guitar, its a chibson the video shows derringer using a custom Les Paul with white binding on both sides, Gibsons flagship full featured Les Paul, then the half arse cut down in quality is a standard, then a junior or studio for students or session players. This is a standard Les Paul with everyone on the body from a custom Les Paul, the standards don't have white binding on both sides, gold tuners, gold bring, pick ups, black pick guards, black toggle switches and all the perks for a giving guitar.
The hell are you talking about that it's a Chibson??? Did you actually watch the video lol this is very clearly a Norlin era Gibson. The parts have been replaced but the guitar is legit
So delighted to see someone who really understand guitars, cos some of customers are pain in back, i explain it, i m building guitars almost 20 years...as well i m repairing guitars, i had opportunity to do jobs on guitars from 60's , 70's too, oh what a beauties..but if someone came to me and says oh can u do tremolo at ma les paul? and i found out that les paul was around 1969? i was totally furious...i told him i rather to pay for it and give u free les paul with tremolo as i had em too...but i will do not do any kind of job on guitars like that..if would be new guitar? i would do it, but? old guitars have not just money value, but there is history, u can feel the soul from it..so i m happy that guitar got restored in some point..if i would be you? i would keep it for while and enjoy it ..sounds great...
What I would have done-after that lead-up about a haunted guitar-would have been to position a ghostly mask behind the camera so that occasionally you would have seen its reflection in the guitar top.
Looks like Brazilian to me. I have 25 years experience working with it. It has a red tint. East Indian rosewood doesn’t really have that. It’s night and day musically
Hey Trog, what are the pickups in this one? PAT NO t-tops? Sorry if I missed you discussing it, I'm sorting out my 81 standard over here while I watch. Sounds like it Burninates the countryside, even with the issues known.
Even with all the issues, if you knew the defects, this guitar would make a wonderful gift for a young and talented player. I'd of died to have this guitar when I was a teenager just starting out. Warts and all! If it has good action and intonation...who cares!
I want to buy a Standard or custom at some point but Im very weary of buying 2nd hand because I am not knowledgeable enough to know if Im being hosed. I do like this one though, I like the Evil Hydra face also

Another great thorough video. Thank you.
I remember the late 70s. The local paper always had les paul deluxes for $250, standards for $350, and a custom would go for $500.
$500 dollars then = $3000 nowadays
telecasterbear The original reverb haha
you mean used guitars for those prices. I have a 77 Standard that I bought new in 78. The list price was $749 - I knew the store owner and got it for $400, which he told me was cost. I was working at McDonalds for $2.85/hr. You do the math. ;)
yep. LP for 500 JMP for 500. chevelles for 3500
I know this guitar, its a chibson
the video shows derringer using a custom Les Paul with white binding on both sides, Gibsons flagship full featured Les Paul, then the half arse cut down in quality is a standard, then a junior or studio for students or session players.
The Rick Clip at 3:19 shows a Les Paul Custom by the width of the binding and inlay on the headstock.
We all have a “one of a kind” Les Paul.
U work on guitars? I need some advice
@@jeremiahgjg3313 how can i help?
I believe that you should have noticed these flaws before you bought the guitar, but with that said, enjoy!, it sounds good to me!
Actually the neck warped because if u leave it in a hot place the neck starts warping
I love the top of this one. Put the chrome back, but leave the black plastic and I'd rock it for sure!
That is my favorite gold/maroon combination for a Les Paul.
I like the figuring on the top of that guitar. I kind of prefer “plain maple” with mild figuring rather than flame or quilted maple.
I have a 1978 Gibson Les Paul Standard! Very close finish as well.
That look like my black Gibson that was stoking when I was 21. So I'll buy it. Good or bad luck. I love it.
Nice review as always. Looks similar to my first electric. Rock on bro!
What I would have done-after that lead-up about a haunted guitar-would have been to position a ghostly mask behind the camera so that occasionally you would have seen its reflection in the guitar top.
"am I eeeeevil"
the guitar: 'yesssss I ammmmm"
Looks like Brazilian to me. I have 25 years experience working with it. It has a red tint. East Indian rosewood doesn’t really have that. It’s night and day musically
Looks and sounds great!
trog mans guitar skill are coming up !! yeah man!!
Excellent Video 👍👍👍.
Take care ♥️🎸👍.
Melbourne, Australia.
Some days I feel my entire guitar collection is haunted by a sloppier guitar player.
Not absolutely sure, but the neck could have very well had a natural twist in the wood grain. Didn't really seem to effect it's sound and playability.
Hey Trog, what are the pickups in this one? PAT NO t-tops? Sorry if I missed you discussing it, I'm sorting out my 81 standard over here while I watch.
Sounds like it Burninates the countryside, even with the issues known.
Despite it being a basketcase, I can't help but love the tone.
do you get guitar crate? i see a similar item i have that i got in the subscription box.
It’s got the best tone for any black sabbath song
This just makes me even more surprised and glad that I found my '77 Les Paul for less than $2000
So how hasn't the gold faded over time,it looks new, stunning guitar
Even with all the issues, if you knew the defects, this guitar would make a wonderful gift for a young and talented player. I'd of died to have this guitar when I was a teenager just starting out. Warts and all! If it has good action and intonation...who cares!
U know a little..
But if u fell 4 gold hardware 40 years old still looks new..
U know a little.
Me too.
Look on reverb.i have the playboy sg standard certificate and all.i dont even take her out of the case.
One mans guitar problems are another ones guitar character. Sounds great!
If it can sound that good through my cheap laptop speakers, and looks that pretty-Its a keeper no matter the Flaws!
My 1972 left handed Les Paul is rare, it says Les Paul up side down and Deluxe. its a left handed body with a right handed neck.
That could definitely be appreciated as totally cool.
I want to buy a Standard or custom at some point but Im very weary of buying 2nd hand because I am not knowledgeable enough to know if Im being hosed. I do like this one though, I like the Evil Hydra face also
