    Omg, what a treat!!!! 80s Era seagrave snorkel reserve 661 from the bucktown neighborhood in action in this day and age in a major city FD like Chicago. Hope it's still in service as this video is over 2 years old. Can only imagine what it's like rolling hot to a fire scene with its diesels rumbling and the Q and the red gumballs on top bright as ever. LOVE this!!!!!!! THANK you FOR UPLOADING

      Im willing to bet thats a 70's era Seagrave tower. 1980 they started using square headlights. Its possible its newer with a old cab put on it after a refurb or accident that they may have had but thats a stretch..

    Whoa, that spare Snorkel at 8:31 is ancient, yet it seems to be one of the best maintained trucks I've ever seen. Only truck here in NYC that they'd use from that era is a Mack CF Foam unit from the 70's. Aside from that, almost no apparatus from before the 2000's are still in service in any capacity, including spare and reserve apparatus.

      Doran Baltus Chicago still has about 15 engine companies that are pre 2000 in front line service and 4 of the eight towers ladders are pre 2000 in front line service

      Not many if any large cities have benefited from funding like FDNY has over the years. Most departments have to make apparatus last for 20-25-30 years.

    Fought a fire similar to this in a downtown in 1997. A neighboring city department brought us "Snorkel 5". It was a 1960's International cabover Snorkel unit they had in storage but it was still very usable. Worked like a charm.

    Great video , I'm surprised I haven't seen it until now . What a nasty , smoky , stinking fire this must have been , all those windows bricked over on the second floor couldn't have been a worse idea ! It was obvious there was no way anyone could have known where the main source was , you hear " fire in the basement , we're cutting a hole now " and the next thing you see is the glow over the roof and of course lots and lots of smoke , there wasn't even enough heat to carry the smoke up and away , those are some of the worst fires to fight , but Chicago's finest did a great job , the manpower and equipment used for this fire was amazing , glad you got this one on video !

    it's nice these older fire videos are saved on RUclips, most of the VHS tapes our fire department took over the years were ruined with bad storage. Of course none of the new younger members give a crap about what we did 30 years ago, but we still do....

    Whether its dust or smoke , water is your best friend. A damp rag/ tie or even sock can help filter some of it while lowering the temperature of air you breathe in.( very important when in a building or area with fire as CO and Co2 dissolves in water)..Even the white smoke can be just a deadly as the dark black stuff....If you're ever in this situation , please do keep these things on your mind as you try to help or get away....

    • @UltraBrickStudios
      @UltraBrickStudios 5 лет назад +1

      Buckets offer a lot of pros, but also a lot of cons. For instance, a bucket can't get in a narrow space like a ladder can. However a bucket can be used to rescue someone(s) safer and more efficiently. All about the area.

      1985 or 87 snorkel, its 85 feet tall. As far as the deck gun ford, thats the deluge wagon, CFD got creative back in the 60s and took monitors off fire boats and attached them to jeeps and old army trucks, when fully fed they could shoot water 200 feet in the air. If i remember correctly the department had 6, now the vehicle you see in the video is the sole remaining reminder of a forgotten time.

      ***** I think Philly still uses a few squirts as well. You don't see as many these days. They were really popular in the 70's and 80's especially for departments that couldn't afford a full-fledged aerial or snorkel.

    Hard to understand something. Decades ago when I went thru fire training we were taught to keep the nozzle moving to put water on as much area as possible. Yet the common theme I see in most of these videos is a steady stream of water pointing at the same place for the duration of the incident. It seems to me that if the nozzles were moving they could put water on more heat.
