  • There was an ‘unwritten agreement’ between Indian and Pakistani armies manning LoC in Ladakh. Both would vacate their forward posts during extreme winters. However, in 1999, there was unusual activity in Batalik & Kargil sectors. Pakistan Army personnel, disguised as civilians, occupied strategic heights in these sectors. In response, India acted decisively, both militarily and diplomatically. Here’s a deep dive by ThePrint into India’s response to Pakistan’s ‘misadventure’, in this edition of Past Forward.

Given that the Chinese had already "done the unthinkable" and crossed the Himalayan heights in 1962, why was there any area where Indian intelligence "least expected" the Pakistanis to come across? This is yet another Himalayan blunder. And every Indian should find it deeply offensive that after 500+ Indian soldiers' deaths, the ex-Ambassador is smiling and reminiscing that he was on a first name and friendly basis with this Asma person. Shame!

Total intelligence failure. Infact this plan was not even new, even then the army was not prepared for it.

    Waah liked this style.
Been many years, India stopped producing content in this style.
Little more work needed in editing, to match the standard.
    Good job team Print 👍

This was not intelligence failure, this lack of awareness and careful attitude. Tje major who informed about intrusion in January 1999, was court martialed.

General VP Malik, GoC Badhwar and Major Gen Krishna Pal are responsible for the failure. It was the young leadership who won the day for India.

The operation was executed by Pakistan Army with a pure intention of causing political instability of Nawaz Sharif government. That is why once objectives were achieved, they stopped logistics and reinforcements to the forward posts or stopped sending reinforcements at all. If the primary objective was to cut off Siachin access, they would have involved Air Force, at least to threaten Indian air support. Hence, saying that this was India's military success is completely nonsense and utter incompetence to understand the whole conflict.

Everyone has the right to have an opinion in this country. You labeling them anti India is the definition of going against the constitution.
Be open to ideas, you dont have to like all or any of them. Journalism is the third pillar of democracy. Respect journalists.
Disparaging them only shows how anti national you are

@Qrentius Against the interest of the nation or against the interest of the government?
Sometimes, we confuse the both as one. Both of them are different.
Also you may be classifying me as a congress supporter. I am not. For me the congress is not the benchmark for anything
Remember, journalists are a citizens ally. All they do is tell you stories.

lol the usual response of Indian army is we were surprised i think the correct word Army should use is we failed in doing our duty , remember this isn't the first time Pakistanis infiltrated Kargil, it happened in 1947, 1965 and 1999
