Vecna: Behold my newest creation: a sentient longsword.
Acererak: It is glorious, milord. Who shall wield it?
Vecna: Only my most powerful and loyal servant of course.
Acererak: I am hono-
Vecna: KAS! Get your ass in here! You have a present.
Fun fact we do see Cavitius in Van Richenten’s as one of the decaying realms around the Clockmakers domain (mentioned in the lesser domains list)
It’s joined by Soth’s old domain too
Vecna and Kas having Domains of Dread was a core part of 2e and part of how Vecna ascended to godhood. Iirc, the ritual (interrupted by Kas's betrayal) didn't fully work, and both were trapped in the Demiplane of Dread. Vecna actually escaped through Sigil and ascended, making him both one of the only Darklords to escape the Dark Powers and one of the only deities to set foot in Sigil. Sad to see this lore completely gone if they did retcon all of it, as it shows why Vecna is so terrifying.
46:40 Spoilers for Campaign 1 of Critical Role and later seasons of Legend of Vox Machina for those of you who care.
During the final arc, Vecna was the final boss for Vox Machina. On the way up the earth titan that Vecna resurrected, Vox Machina ran across the sword. They had learned about it earlier while petitioning the gods for help, and I can't remember if they specifically looked for it or if they just happened to find it. Anyway, Grog uses it during the final fight and then gives it over to Vasselheim.
If I were writing a novel, I would write a story of a Paladin of Lathander on a quest to use the sword of kas to slay Vecna’s Avatar. The paladin has to resist corruption so he can still be himself at the end of the quest
Playing d&d since 78. Holmes blue book and then AD&D. Awesome channel!!!
Lets go! One of my players has this, and used it to slay the user of the hand and eye. I am having a lot of fun roleplaying the sword, who is now pushing the players to seek out and destroy Vecna for good
To me there’s something really funny about this dude just hanging in a domain of dread expending all these resources to fight Vecna who isn’t even there. I mean, whats he even fighting right now? Are Kas’ troops just killing each other, Umbara style?
I too am glad the slippies are back
I’m almost caught up! It’s been about a year of work drivetime. EASILY the best dnd channel. Tangents and unhinged moments are the absolute best parts, also not caring about the pronunciation. Thank you, love you.
PS
Need my #SOTD Focket Tshirt (comfortC) 👌🏼
The stat block made Will laugh like the dog from the 'whacky races' cartoon
From my comment on the early access patreon (which is totally worth it) on the topic
"In reference to Demogorgon's CR lowering If Malcanthet betrays him, it is in dungeon magazine (not to be confused with DRAGON magaizne) issue 150, page 91. says that she "whispers something into her soon to be ex-lover's ear" and tldr his CR lowers 2 levels for the boss fight you are about to have with him."
In addition there are like four other things that you could do that lower his CR for that boss fight for a total of Demogorgon's CR lowering by 10 overall if you did all of them, 2 CR per action.
Also "Kas, the vampire of the silver mask" is, indeed, a JoJo reference.
Hey William and Brian! I love your content and I’ve been a long time listener! My table and I are moving over to Pathfinder 2E because of WotC shenanigans. If you’re looking for ideas for your next giveaway, maybe consider the new Pathfinder 2E Core Rulebook. Paizo has implemented a lot of errata and shrunk down the original Core Rulebook. Shout out to Demogorgon!
That's a great suggestion!
The more I hear about Kas, the more I think of Kain from the Legacy of Kain series
In a game I ran, I had vecna mine the corpse of therasdun in the Astral plane for secrets. The maddening knowledge he gained allowed him to siphon energy off of the dark powers of ravenloft like a colossal battery of evil. This power allowed him to foment a plot that would given him enough worshipers to attain divinity. Occasionally as my players blundered through the mists of ravenloft they would encounter the whirling blades of Kas' plane. Totally unrelated I would love to see an intro that was a dancing demogorgon singing never gonna give you up. As a Rick roll to the fans. I wonder how much it would cost to license 🤔 keep up the good work shout out to demogorgon
Oh, Beern. I kept hearing "Beard".
When your sword is more famous & intelligent than you are. Do you think it goes around saying: hey guys look at my new jock? Do you wanna see him dance?
Kas the Not Appearing in this Film
Great episode as always!
Probably "the next dawn" to avoid arguments like "but you didn't have the item with you when you long rested so the charges arent refilled"?
Long have I waited for this episode. I just introduced this into my campaign. My players just obtained it for their final battle against Vecna.
Are we sure I&B didn’t recover the Shart of Plenty? That gas sounded enchanted.
I am Kas of the Infinite Appellations...
If you guys don't do an episode on the obsidian man before the Years up I'm going to eat my boots.
Now I want to hear the story of bad cop Kas and his best friend good cop cow that is terrified of him but is still his friend cause Kas treats Cow nice
Top tier episode! As always you bring the hot hot DnD lord I need to start my week 😘
He’s the Bloody Handed because he didn’t listen to his wife , who told him not to touch her rotary cutter or sewing scissors! Some folks never learn.
I see Vecna getting pommel struck on the head by Kas which pops his eye out of his rotting head. Then Vecna gets down on hands and knees to look for his eye as you might look for a contact lens. Finally he finds it and holds his newly recovered eye in triumph. Kas then lobs off the hand that’s holding the eye…. Thus the hand and eye of Vecna. 😂
I find it crazy when you look at Kas s Stat sheet he is way more powerful than strahd s Stat sheet
Super late to the party, but all Magic Items recharge at dawn/dusk because most are not living and therefore don't take any type of rests.
I have never noticed till now but i think there audio channels are flipped
I'd love to see Brian gift up his slippies for a give away
Mordenkainens tome of foes as a give away
Kas? Sounds like Caz.
Now that we are woking up dnd. Im gonna make it that Kas and Vecna were despondent lovers. They have a very Batman And Joker dynamic, a very homosexual nightmare, and wanting to plung his sword in Vecna is like suspicious. Lol
Made a fighter warlock who’s patron was Vecna but what does a magic god want with a mostly martial character? The whole point vecna offered him a pact in the first place was to be a replacement for Kas so as he grew in power he became more vampiric (human to dhampire and his form of dread was vampiric in appearance) but his final goal was to obtain the sword of kas and either make it submit or destroy it proving his superiority to kas and earning his place by Vecna’s side as a more loyal servant also there’s even more lore in older editions to support Vecna being there in the domain of dread like how he had to trick another dimi god to him to attain full god status and escape to the city of doors which is part of the explanation of the transition between editions and how after vecna left there was no more use in the dark powers keeping kas’ domain up so it fell apart leaving him to fade into a half existing half non existing state allowing him to be a sorta patron for a precursor to the warlock class (Idr its name)
Psh... A mere "dread lord vampire general"? Not impressed!
Uh, Kas is actually pronounced “case,” so disappointed.
