The Magistratum Mundanus appeared first on the black pants legion Podcast: open.spotify.c... in October of 2022.
History/Context : The Magistratum Mundanus is a roleplaying session set in the Marginalia of Warhammer 40k. Tex, an out of practice DM of Rogue Trader and Dark Heresy brushed off his very dusty skills (after a 10 year hiatus of DMing no less!) to tell a story of . . . well. . . you'll see.
The magistratum Mundanus itself is a homebrew of FFG's Dark heresy 1 and 2, along with several select modifications to small arms and explosion rules to ensure combat is faster, more lethal, and stupidity is curtailed regarding willy-nilly use of violence. Regardless of this, the team does what it does.
Further: This is non canon in the extreme, and is based largely upon what Tex remembered from his heyday of 40k lore and the fandom, and is in no way whatsoever relevant to the current world as it stands, its current lore, or should ever be judged on the accuracy thereof.
Note: This is a game among friends having fun. The audio gets better over time as we were figuring out what in the hell we were doing. Please enjoy!
Also - This is a fan made creation. All rights are reserved by the actual copyright holders. The Art however, is by Eldonious Rex. Glory be to his skills.
"It is the 41st millennium... Oh God, what was that sound?!"
I legitimately can't think of a better introduction to the 40k universe.
The only other one is "AND EVERYTHING IS ON UNHOLY FIRE!" In my opinion.
@@reggie6230 Followed by screams of the warp.
"Kramer, what's going on out there?!?!"
"*The Gellar Fields are down Jerry*"
@@Cyber_Samurai20 "Aight fellas, get the good moonshine and the big shotguns. I'm not staring into Hell's butthole sober tonight."
*THUNK* "WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?!?!"
"Grigglak fly real bird before."
Emperor protect this man. He's too precious to lose.
Grigglak is awesome, but Ricky is the MVP of this campaign. Don't @ me.
I fucking love Dark Heresy. On my first campaign the psyker got possessed by a god damn Lord of Change, killed everyone in the party except for my Arbitrator, who had a fuckin heavy stubber, and used it to blast the daemon's wings off, and then just belted the fucking thing until it stopped moving. The inquisitor in charge of us took note of this, and that's how, in the second campaign, Arbitrator Callahagn returned as INQUISITOR Callahagn. Which was undoubtedly an awful choice because my character didn't want anything to do with any problems that he couldn't solve with his machine gun. So much so that the guardsmen NPC's under my command began to refer to me as "Inquisitor Machine Gun."
Sometimes the Inquisition needs something that isn't a sledgehammer of the Guard or a Scalpel of the Throne Agents, but controlled chaos of an agent way too trigger happy
Emperor be praised
Picture Inquisitors Machine Gun working with the all guards man party from taleforge
Sounds like he studied at the Greg Sargent School of Inquisiting Good
As someone who has listened to the original podcasts a lot, I'm so happy you put this on RUclips where a wider audience will hear it and where I can more easily share it with friends. I love all your RPG games.
Absolutely same dude. I can't wait to relive this whole adventure
Is this old?
Wait.... pod casts?
@@Esau420 I envy you mate. You’ve got 2-3 years of content to binge.

Where do I begin this podcast journey? My only map led me to a halva store in Damascus.
"It is the 41st millennium... Oh God, what was that sound!" Oh yeah, we're gonna have a fun time!
*THUNK* "WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?!?!"
Everyone cuts out the last part of the 40k opening "But the Universe is a big place, and whatever happens you will not be missed..."
I thought gw cut that part out so people would buy more super special special guys that are important with plot armor
@@mikem3131yes. And this is one of the multitude of reasons that people should NOT give GW money.
@@boomerkobold3943 Thank the emperor for 3d printers.
I immediately thought of a character. His job would have been to keep the lights in common areas and corridors of a hab block on a hive world changed. His family had been doing this for over 100 generations. And he would present as your run of the mill cant spouting imperial drone. The issue is that the hab block they were responsible for was absorbed into the local underhive millenia ago. So his character sheet would look more like a hive ganger's. And it would gradually come out how fanatical and violent you need to be to keep the streetlights lit in an underhive. Basically they'd have operated on a "you break a light bulb, you get to become a torch" as a general principle.
That would be freaking awesome. I can just see it: he wears the shapeless gray robes of the Imperium and tries to be polite and even self-effacing. However, when someone in any way messes with any means of illumination, he flings back the sides of his robes revealing the oft-repaired flak armor beneath, festooned with weapons. And then it's "roll for initiative, bitches!"
that sounds like a terrifying warcry! "you break the light bulb, you get to become the torch!" Imagine hearing that as a crazy man wielding a flamethrower looking like a priest comes rushing at ya from the underhive shadows.
This guy! This guy gets Warhammer!
That's fucking AMAZING.
I was about to pass this by as not for me till I read "based largely upon what Tex remembered from his heyday of 40k lore".
It's pretty much impossible for that to not be way better than what GW have done to the lore over the last 15+ years.
Some authors have done some fun stuff, as a whole the setting hasn't really been handled all that well but there's been some good bits, if you look for them, and at least we got the Squats back.
Yeah, new lore sucks mostly because it betrayed what 40k was. "Forget the power of technology and science for so much have been forgotten never to be relearn. Forget the progress and understanding for in the future there is only war."
Then GW wanted more money so they made that Crawl fucker who pulled legions of super duper space marines out of his warped ass, and started inventing shit? I hate this so fucking much, the only thing I like about new lore is the return of primarchs. Just update the fucking models, some Eldar models can legaly drink! They did not have to ruin lore to get more money from their plastic sales. I doubt there are any lore fans making decisions for GW only greedy, soulless suits who only care about profit at the cost of everything else.
@somerandomschmuck2547 for the squats I just hate the clone template thing since we already have Krieg and Vitae Womb system
@@Darqshadow Yeah but with the Krieger they just clone people on mass, and there's a lot we don't know, with the Votan there's this whole complicate system with different templates made with a general focus in mind, not to mention there's a lot more cultural significance to the whole system, where as the Krieg just use so they can keep churning out guard regiments in the hope eventually they'll be absolved of their "sins". So it's not like the Votan don't have their own spin on the concept.
I will admit, I do miss a lot of the older lore, like the fact all Squats were sort of psychic and like the Orks, didn't draw from the Warp, but from the collective gestalt of the Spirits of their Ancestors, it's a weirdly wholesome idea. That these guys for all their flaws and imperfections would stick it out together, even through death, when a Living Ancestor invokes their power, they aren't just using their own, they are calling on the collective will of their entire race. It gave this weirdly hopeful feeling to them, at least to me, like "no matter what this galaxy throws at us, we will hold out together". Also the importance of family in their culture, how any Squat solider would have had to raise at least two sons to full adulthood before joining the army, meaning any Squat you field would presumably be a father, a husband, etc... Even the new recruits wouldn't be fresh faced kids, these are guys who have lived a full life, but also have people who they love and care for back home. Despite not being human, in some ways they felt more human as a faction. Also helped most of them felt a bit more down to earth then the insane zealots or nihilists you tend to get with the Imperium.
To be fair a lot of that is still there in some ways, just reimagined to help give them a bit more 40k flavoring, they do still have strong family ties, just now the family thing is both more and less literal, they're still more down to earth then other factions, etc... Also they're one of the biggest examples of GW actually revisiting Older Lore in a way that doesn't make me want to smash something, they are the Men of Stone. Also I do like the Votan themselves as a concept, actually working Dark Age tech that is still trying to help humanity out, not to mention the simple fact that they imply/ can be taken as implying there was more to the Rebellion of the Men of Iron then just "Sci-fi Trope #23: Machines rise up against humanity for stupid reasons, so now no one trusts or uses AI anymore, in spite of how useful/necessary they would arguably be".
@@somerandomschmuck2547 I wouldn't consider the Leagues of Votann "a good bit".
I got a mental image of Grigglak riding a Squighawk yelling on the top of his lungs with two axes
Grigglak ride great bird!
"Warhammer, at least how I remember it..."
Good Warhammer, you mean.
Grigglak charge
The admech was hilarious.
Firearms? Here. Goodbye.
Wait.. uh... Ammo?
I did not think I would ever see a combination of the all guardsmen party, police academy and The Diskworld night watch novels. This is amazing
Officer 'Hank Hill' keeps getting me. "Oh, uh we don't make that much here" that whole exchange with the guys just killed me. Y'all are the best. I needed this today.
After watching the so far 13 episodes, I'm amazed Viktor has not yet replaced the word 'Civilan' with the phrase 'Low priority Target' everywhere he sees it 🤣🤣
I didn't know I needed Tex to do something in 40k.
It's just right.
He probably does a good gm for BattleTech he knows that game pretty well.
Like a lot of us old-timers, he grew up with the Andy Chambers-era 40k. Fun, stupid and over the top. The way it was meant to be
Such humble beginnings, I genuinely enjoyed listening to this on the podcast more than any other rpg. Just. From Ricky talking not-good so well that people agree with him, to the Granny Servitor, to Quinn risking warp fuckery to get Frog flies. It was all, so fucking beautiful. The fact that the BBEG didn't even get to play was hilarious, the players just solved the problems they encountered in unexpected and interesting ways.
Genuinely though, I think my favourite was Primarch Pizza. I laughed so hard I cried.
I mean, Star Track on the Courtisy Flush is also great.
Tex getting to be the captain and thus reading the opening "Space, the Fonal frontier..." speech is perfect.
How many grenades, Ricky?
@@thatguynameddan2136 yes.
32:54 is the best exchange between a NPC and a player I have heard in ages
Frog is fine
Praise Frog
Always
Frog must be fed.
Frog needs food
indeed.
Somehow I knew you were an oldschool DM and my god is your voice perfect for it now.
I'm getting some All Guardsman Party vibes and that's an itch that hasn't been scratche din a while. I especially love how the unscripted silliness at the start wasn't cut as it reminds me of similar situations I had playing Tabletop RPGs.
Inspirational speech muffled by gasmask
57:52 I'm enjoying all of this, but the subtle Men In Black reference right here is beautiful.
It is only fitting that I sit here listening to this while holding my copy of "The Imperial Infantryman's Handbook". The Emperor protects, praise be the Emperor!
You mean The Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting Primer, right citizen?
@scottmacgregor3444 the Handbook includes both the Uplifting Primer AND the Imperial Munitorum Manual.
My God, this is fantastic.
Please Tex, we need the rest of this.
YES! Also... "40k as I remember it" hits different after the latest lore fuckery from Games Workshop... At this stage I treat 40k like I do battletech: After a certain point I ignore the "official" lore... 3025-3067 forever.
As a near-total outsider - what'd they do?
@@TOASTEngineerto keep us from being here until the 41st, going over the backstory vs what they've changed and done...
Tldr The writers either don't know or care how cause and effect work and have written contrivance after contrivance to get their story to work. So my grimdark future is now a hopeful place where humanity will probably be fine.
It's like going into a horror movie expecting everyone to die to the monster just for everyone to sing koombaya together. Not what I signed up for.
@@ElGreco15Maybe, if you read Campaign 3 and then never paid attention again. There was a brief period during the Era Indomitus and we have been past that for years now. We literally just The Lion because it’s worse than it’s ever been in the last 10k years lmao
Glory to the Emperor. And the hellish bureaucracy he definitely approves of.
You know. Papa Smurf really hates the Imperium Bureaucracy. I mean, really hates them. And he is the God-Emperor's Chief Accountant. You know full well, if Gold Daddy wakes up. Every. Single. Politician is going to have their heads explode. And this why they do not want him to get off that Goldren Throne. After all. If Roboat Smurf could die and come back because Sexy Eldar Magic. You know full well, with that sexy magic. The God-Emperor, too, could be brought back. Just have to pull the plug. I mean, Big GD did love some good Eldar Booty. (Fuck, TTS corrupted me and I refuse to accept the "official" canon....well okay not all of it.)
*skeletal screeching *.
I will gladly listen to this series again!
And here I was in the middle of listening to this campaign on spotify. Guess I'll give another listen
Listened as they dropped on the podcast.... will now again!
This was one of the greatest ttrpg campaigns I've had the pleasure of listening to. My favorites were Ricky, Grigglak, and Frog. I hope they do more campaigns in the 40k universe or even try the battletech rpg.
Can't wait for the incompetent "Steiner, son of Steiner"
This is bringing back some fun memories and probably some no small amount of grim trauma disorder from running Dark Heresy, Rogue Trader, Only War and Black Crusade for just under about 12 years
Then just like Cadia, my mind broke before the players did
Genuinely one of the best campaigns ever run, start to finish its everything 40k could be and what at-least i personally love about the setting, cannot wait for the sequel series, not to tank texs youtube analytics but the whole thing is on the bpl podcast spotify
Oh gods - it's the 40k themed Ankh-Morpork night watch....
I was thinking the exact same thing
If in the first minute, shit ain't broke.
You ain't done things hard enough, or right enough.
You know, for people nostalgic about the old days of 40k, they're actually doing a made to order reprint of the original Rouge Trader source book this week.
It's overpriced, of course, but it's still a pretty cool thing to see.
Oh, well that’s cool.
This is so great! The interaction between Mike and Goat's characters are perfect, and Mike is 100% selling it in the correct way as that character! Reminds me of my time with friends playing Death in Space and Traveler a few years back. So excited to hear more of the madness that's to come from this collection of nonsensical people forced to be cops when they aren't cops, or should even be considered cops.
The Emperor blesses us this day! I am more then excited to hear how this all turns out
Anyone clicking on this, listen to the whole series. It is absolutely worth it.
So I hunted down the podcaast version, just for you to post it youtube? I guess I'll have to listen again...
Hell yes! The return of my kid's and my "weekly radio program" of choice!
Laughs in Krieg
Tex you twisted bastard you made me cry by just reciting the introduction to 40k. I love you Tex.
I haven't been excited for a tabletop podcast in many moons. Looking forward to the next installment.
The next one is basically a Grindhouse action movie. As are many of the episodes to follow. It’s glorious.
Thank the man emperor, I love listening to this but sorting thru the podcasts is a freaking pain. Thank you for uploading to RUclips tex, thank you very much.
Good time as any to relisten. Thanks for great adventure which will unfold!
And in time he became detective by his own hand.
Huzzah now i have the podcast on my youtubes
I appreciate Reno 911, 40k Edition.
Grigglak charge!
Amazing all around!
I'm so glad you posted this on youtube, I was looking for it after seeing the shorts
Pizza delivery is back guys!
An opportunity to listen to this again? Yes pls
Cory Trevorson...😂😂😂 I'm dying.
There are a lot of really poignant stories in this RPG. Guardsman that survive so long that they retire, men surviving in the 40k universe, the high tech and low tech, the unique experiences. You guys are also hilarious. Love the show, keep up the great work!
Just in time to listen through my shift. Thanks BPL!!
Perfect timing, was just considering listening to the whole series once again.
40:00 Thanks Tex, I am stealing that!
HOORAY! Thanks for the years of amazing content Tex and crew.
Time to listen to these again... for like the 10th time. So good!
PURE GOLD! y'all bring it to 11. Thank you for sharing and I can't wait til ep 2
It's already on their podcast, it's a wild ride from here on
Id only heard a snippet of this from one of the many, fine 'Intermission' segments in your other videos and it warms my dead xenos loving heart to have it here to enjoy!
Babe, wake up, the legion is calling.
Well I got Spotify now 'cause I'm not waiting.
Okay. How have I NEVER HEARD OF THIS!? THIS IS GREAT!
You know it's gonna be a good run when the table blows up 5 seconds in
Nice! Now it shall soon be on the tooooooooobs. I o love this series. Thanks you all for making such a great little podcast.
Awesome.
I've been hoping you would bring this over to RUclips.
This was an incredible adventure to follow. I wish you all luck for traveler.
I listened twice on the podcast and now it is time for round 3. for those who haven't seen this yet. I promise I can say it is worth the watch
1:23 i just found you guys because of an animation and cant wait to binge what ever yall have put out so far, im so excited.
YAAAAASSSSS!
Oh this is going to be a fun hour and forty-seven.
Aw shit, here we go again
Absolutely amazing gentlemen of the BPL. Just what I needed today at work.
Yes! I’ve listened to this podcast series at least two times
On one hand I wish I could see the tabletop sim fuckery but on the other hand having no visual context makes it funnier
Funny how this series led Tex to absorbing a good chunk of the TTRPG community.
Something to look forward to listening to on the late shift tonight, heck yeah!
lol loved this on the podcast, more than happy to hear it again on the tube! flies for frog!
Can i just say, that art is awesome.
That BAR looks too good

So now I've found myself wondering if Colm is intentionally or not named after Colm Meaney, best known for playing Chief Miles O'Brien.
Very fun! Glad to finally get to listen to this full thing. After only 3 adverts to distract within the first 10 minutes.
we do hate youtubes stupid advertising policies.
This was glorious on the podcast. Very happy to see it make it to RUclips.
It's kind of unfortunate we have no vid footage to see, but the audio alone more than makes up for it.
Loved this on the podcast! Thankyou for bringing a smile to my day!
During the second trimester ultra sound. The Krieger women is given an inspection and they give the fetus a tiny entrenching tool. Therefore enrolling the future child in the guard before first breath. And a chance to escape the rock hard abs off the Krieger women.
For the love of the emperor's rotted toes, PLEASE tag me in the next episode, this got my through my shift at work today without having a mental breakdown
Kelso reminds me of the Van Zandt militia.
"The fuck are these rolls?" The theme of this entire campaign.
The space marines missed out on something good, not recruiting from Grigglak's home world.
I havent been able to delve into the podcast where this was first introduced. This is still fabulous to listen to and it helps the day move on.
This is my forth ride through the Magistratum Mundanus. You guys are so much fun.
Huh, I just finished listening to magistratatum mundanus a few weeks ago. Quality stuff, though I feel like Thor was some missing content between them arriving and the spaceport for their big showdown and then them suddenly being in an elevator the next episode.
I think the Captain might be my favorite NPCs
Well, guess I have to listen to this a third time now haha
Such a great podcast, I'm glad there's art of them!
Good lord this was some funny shit
Yo! Raise the Interium boys!
Man im really looking forward to this, gonna be listening to it at work😊
