    Your Momma was correct! The metal spoon will react with the acid of the tomatoes and the salsa will have a metallic taste

    • @glendabrady9996
      @glendabrady9996 2 года назад +27

      That’s right, my mom told me about that as well. Tomatoes are acidic , therefore causing the metallic taste. But now most spoons are made with stainless steel.

    I just wanted you to know that I made your "Everyday Salsa," and it is a staple in our home now. It is so easy to make, we always have the ingredients, but it is hard to keep track of when I need to make more. I am constantly hearing the echoes of my family throughout the day: "Is there any Salsa left" "where did all the salsa go" and "Mom, you need to make more salsa." As I said, we don't know how we ever lived without it.

    I googled why not use metal utensils when making the salsa. Basically it's because the metal reacts with the acid in the tomatoes and makes a bitter salsa. Now we know!

  • @charliebarnes7514
    @charliebarnes7514 Год назад +4

    Rachael I think the metal spoon probably refers to the "olden" days (😂) when some were made of aluminum or silver, which would definitely alter the flavor.
    Stainless steel will NOT affect the taste at all.

    Mrs. Rachel, your mom most likely did not recommend using a medal spoon to insert inside the glass jar because if you drop the medal spoon to hard or in time (base on the thickness of the glass jar) it can break.
    As a person who does canning, I too am very protective of my glass jars!

    Rachel, I love your videos and already have made several items. I have to say, this salsa recipe was so 🔥 that I had to discard it and start over. The second batch I used only one serano and jalapeño and I cut the seeds and white out of the center before I blended them. This is a nice, easy recipe and you must have a high tolerance for the heat because it about burned my tongue off LoL Thanks for being such a good teacher!

    • @1FantasticDreamBird
      @1FantasticDreamBird 2 года назад +9

      @@chucksracingchannel377 Just add vinegar or sugar to tone down heat from peppers, a tablespoon at a time to taste. Serrano peppers are actually up to 8 times hotter than jalapeno peppers on the scale. I usually add 1or 2 jalapenos. If wanting the heat from a serrano, just add one.

    You Mom was right about the metal spoon. You should never use any kind of metal utensil in Mason jar. It can scratch the interior of the jar, which can effect the canning process. It can also cause small hard to see fractures in the jar, which can cause the jar to break during the canning process. So Mom knew what she was talking about. Pam in South Carolina 😊

      LoL! When I read on it it made total sense, the metal reacts to the acidity in the salsa..same reason I make sure my copper pots are lined with aluminum like in my Carnitas video, I collect copper but won't use it on tomato dishes unless they are lined with aluminum...I knew the answer but my brain gets away from me sometimes, will have to share lol!! Thank you so much for your comment Trish, many blessings my friend. ❤

    🤷‍♀️FACT...You don't use metal of any thing/any type in a glass Mason jar of any size, especially when either contents or the jar is hot, it has the potential to cause microscopic damage/fractures that comprises the glass and under pressure from steam or canning processes will cause the glass to fracture and burst under conditions.👍🏻

    I’ve been looking for a homemade salsa that will keep for more than a few days. Your everyday salsa sounds perfect. Have you ever tried canning it, using a water bath canner?

      @@rachelcookswithlove What is your opinion on onions? I was told Mexicans always use white onion. Are yellow onions or sweet onions ok for salsa? I like the flavor of yellow onions when they are cooked but white or sweet when raw. What's your opinion?

    I never new there was a salsa for posole. I only use jalapeños for our salsa. We use garlic salt and tomato sauce for our salsa and water. We don't cook it. We cook the jalapeños for sure then freeze them until we need to make salsa. We have to have salsa all the time. I just cooked and pack 17lbs of jalapeños and put them in the freezer. Next week I'll buy and roast and pack long green Chile. I already have my red dry chile for enchiladas, tamales, chile Colorado with meat and potatoes.

    Yipee....finally The new salsa tastes great. I still do not know what I did wrong with the other three batches. For this last one I changed spoons to plastic from wood, and got out a different skillet to cook it. Boy this has sure been a tough evening. But as they say “all’s well that ends well!

    I made your everyday salsa for my husband, and he loved it! Our anniversary was Sunday, July 17th. He loves Chile Rellenos, but I was afraid to try the real deal. I made your Chile Relleno Casserole, and along with your salsa, it was a HIT! He absolutely loved the entire meal. Thank you! I couldn't find serrano peppers at my local grocery store, so I used three really large jalapenos. The salsa had a kick, but we loved it.

    Miss Rachel I have been on a mission to find this salsa recipe. There is a Cantina near my home that has this Salsa. It is different than the boiled salsa, the Pozole salsa has a enchilada sauce texture because of the oil in the cooking process. I agree with you they are both great salsas but the Pozole Is my favorite and now because of you sharing this recipe I can keep it in my refrigerator too,thank you for sharing.

    The thing about the metal spoon was metal with tomato don’t mix because of acid in tomatoes. This what I was taught as a girl!
