I'll weigh in here. Full disclosure: I shoot Olympus. Ok, now that that's out of the way, here are some observations. Many people have been trashing this camera today - both on RUclips and elsewhere. The specs have been leaked for weeks and Olympus themselves have positioned the camera for sports and wildlife shooters and have said so. Now I don't care what anyone shoots...I really don't. I used to get pulled into all the "my gear is better than your gear" arguments back in the day but that's a total waste of time. Any modern camera circa 2019 can take incredible images. Like Sony? Go ahead and shoot Sony. Fuji? Have at it. Olympus? Rock that E-M1x! I agree with Joe here...this camera is not for everyone but it IS an incredible piece of gear. Disclaimer: No disrespect to Nikon in that last statement...just using it as an example as I have shot that combination in my youth.
Thanks for sharing this information Joe. I actually learned a few things here. I went from 10 mark 2 to 5 mark 2 because i was unimpressed with the em10 mark 3. Some things Id love to see: 1. Bring back the ALL-I compression for video mode. (I think they ditched this in the 10 mark 3) 77mbps for 1080p is awesome. If they can add an ALL-I option for 4k in the mark 3, I am game! The variable bit rate is somewhat of a bummer especially when Panasonic can pump out 400mbps files. 2. Be able to switch focus points with eye up to the EVF. (this is one of things i miss on the 5 mark 2 compared to the 10 mark 2) 3. a more hi res EVF 4. More focus points. (and/or phase detection?) I am confident that they could make the 5 mark 3 a baby em1x minus the battery grip and maybe lose a feature or 2, and still not cannibalize sales. Especially if priced right. Ah well, we will see. Olympus, if you're listening, I beg of you.....haha, anyway - thanks again Joe.

I am not a M4/3 user but I think it is a wonderful system with a place, this seems like a wonderful camera I just think the price is going to be a tough sell, cameras like the xt-3 (half the price) and the a73(2/3 the price) are going to be tough competition

Spectacular camera! Great features and innovations, but I do not see any of the Leica/Sony users racing to get their hands on it. And as you say almost at the end of the video, the camera fits your needs and perhaps the needs of the current Olympus ambassadors and users. I am using an Em1 mk2 at present and I am very happy with it and so far I have only scratched the surface of its main features, although I wouldn't cut my veins if one day, somewhat, (wink wink...) Olympus will add on the firmware the ND filter... What I mean is that for my usage the camera doesn't satisfy the price tag but I can see how much effort has been put into it.
Nice Camera Em1x but your website's gallery is very amazing. you have an excellent collection of portraits there. I'll dig even deeper in your website. thank you Joe.
This has surpassed all competitor's could offer.... never expected ND and multiple AF area selector !! this camera is as exciting as you !!... you didn't talk about Videos... does it shoot 4k, 60fps ?
Hello from Denmark Joe! I love your videos and specially this video, because it was this video that really makes me buy this camera! I am really impressed already with the speed and crazy AF system this camera has! I couldn't be more satisfy with the performers. Thanks and again and good shutting :-)
Thanks Joe, another nice video. Although it is never going to be my camera, it really brings impact towards to the good direction. I am looking forward to see the new technology in my next camera.
not a competition but I would love to see you and Jared "the fro" go 1:1 on this, especially because of your background in film and full frame. Loved this video really opened up all the differences here with the E-M1. I was kind of hoping this year's review was a mk3 with updated sensor, viewfinder. Can't see myself doing this though it is pretty cool and if I did shoot a lot and professionally I can see the role. PS. solid presentation style. I have done a lot of speaker training and public speaking but before I hit the fall circuit I will have to pump up watching your vids.
This camera looks awesome...I’m a fairly new shooter (about a year or so) with a Panasonic G7...was looking to step up a little and was looking at the original E-M1 or the E-M5ii or the LUMIX G85...have up to $600 or so for a body...anyone have a suggestion?
The Eagle has landed. This thing is more like a space ship. I'd like to see how it works with classic Four Thirds lenses, which are on par with Zeiss and Leica glass.
I think people miss the point of a large M43 Body, If you are shooting a 12 hour day wedding you need a large body - small cameras cramp your hand. the big deal with M43 is the bag over your shoulder - smaller lenses less weight.
Hello Sir, Please help me out here!! I have got new a Olympus omd em1 ii a couple of days before! The camera is on firmware version 1.0. Please guide me how can I update my camera with all the firmware that came in last 2 and half years? Or should I just update the latest version? Would that mean I would get all the firmware updates' benefits till latest one? Your help will highly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
Hi Joe. I am new to Olympus. I am more interesting in long exposure photography and one of you youtube show live exposure, which I love. I wonder which old camera or which series has Live Composite? I google and the result stated Olympus OM-D EM-1, but I don't know which version it is referring to. Does all Olympus OM-D EM-1 has Live Composite feature or just the latest version, and from what year does Olympus started adding LC? Basically I just want a cheap camera with Live Composite for long exposure. I don't want any fancy AF, etc.
I'm confident they'll update the firmware of the EM-1 MII soon, giving us some updated features. Not all of them, of course, but a lot of the actual hardware is similar, if not the same. One thing I wish we'd seen from you Joe is some of your own style of images shot with the 'X' - I'm interested to see if it's useful for event, and portraits, not to mention hybrid shooting.
According to m43rumours there are firmware updates for em1ii and em5 mark ii it is it was released the 24 January. I have not had the time to check myself
@@ultramuc466 Yep there have been, and Olympus Capture was updated, too. No wifi tethering for the MII yet. Tried it with the option in OC but it says the "option isn't available for this camera."
Certainly a great tool. And a clever move from Olympus. A rugged tool for every kind of rough enviroments, good ergonomics and decent battery life. But, Olympus isn t serving the ultimate video tool. So, Olympus doesen t want to compete with Panasonic in order not to cannibalize their sales. That makes me hope that both brands will continue to improve the M4/3 system. It looks like price will drop very quick. As Olympus didn t implement newest display technology in it and took an "old" sensor. Anyway the move is quite good. I am sure that Olympus didn t fully listen to the pros by designing this camera. Marketing considerations have been prioritized. This is the right tool for all pros, reporters, fotojournalists, news agencies that now can have a rugged and reliable top notch tool for half the weight and half the price.
Thanks for your video about this great new camera Joe. This looks like an amazing camera for the pro working photographers out there. I am just a very keen amateur of many years so it is not something I really need. However if I came into some money I would treat myself and make sure I worked hard at my photography so I could do the camera justice :D For now I will happily stick to my Pen F, OMD EM5 and my prime lenses. They produce the quility I need for own personal use. I hope you have a lot of fun with the camera over the coming months and that it produces you some great images:D Thanks for sharing this video of your first thoughts about it. I have also watched Chris Eyre Walker's video and he has captured some great video and images with the one he has had since September. Thank you once again for your passion towards photography it really shines through :D Teddy
I would be really ok if they decide to put half the phase detection in the Em5, especially since they have increased the gap between the models with this camera. I hope they aren't so stubborn to say it will only be in the pro bodies.
Now when E-M1 II got the firmware 3.0 update couple days ago (19.06.2019), I would like to see a experience video between eye focusing feature in it. And especially possibility use camera to convert raw files over USB....
Looks impressive. If I was a pro photographer I’d be tempted. I’m surprised they chose to orient the batteries vertically that way. If they were put flat, Olympus could have easily shaved half an inch off the size of that camera. But I’m being picky 😁
Sincerely André Pepin - I disagree. FACT - it is NOT the same viewfinder as in the EM1 - Mark II. FACT - it uses all new technology with higher magnification which is REALLY nice. My belief is that most of the whining online is because of people who don't understand the technology and a few reviewers who felt it should have been OLED. Olympus skipped on OLED for now due to the way OLED displays images vs. an LCD. The speed at which the image is displayed progressively is NOT fast enough to prevent EVF blackout. The Olympus LCD EVF operates at 120fps to make EVF blackout impossible to see with the human eye. OLED would have negatively impacted that and even though OLED LOOKS somewhat better (contrast, brightness, sharpness) it lacks in refresh rate at this size. It would not have been ideal for a camera with this speed.
@@theJoeEdelman Thank you for your prompt response Joe. I'm not ready to switch to a new camera system any time soon, but I like to keep informed on what's available out there. On an another note, I would like to thank you for your videos in general, and specifically those that are related to studio techniques and DIY series. Cheers from Montreal, Canada!
It does not look that much bigger than the m1-2 with a grip :-) I don't see any very good reasons to change from the 1-2 for my use. This looks more like a step to the side, and not an directly replacement. 👍
I love Olympus, but sincerely would like to know why they can’t get face detect, C-AF & tracking to perform as well as other bodies currently on the market. This is the only area where the system is lacking for me, and from reviews I’m seeing the em1x isn’t doing any better than the em1ii. Also really hoping to have the wireless tethering with the em1ii via a firmware update!! Thank you for your work Joe!
thanks for the info Joe, iam 65 years old and too tired of carrying big full frame camera and telephoto lens for wildlife photography, iam seriously thinking of buying this camera and lenses, iam not into video only interested in photos
Nice video Joe. Joe, why don't you tell Olympus to make a 150mm f1.4? Give them a hard time .... tell them if Sigma and Nikon can make 105mm f1.4s for a full frames, surely, Olympus, rich with heritage of making incredible lenses (they made a 250mm f2.0 and a 350mm f2.8 back in the 70s(?) for their OM cameras) can make a 150mm f1.4 for M43. Visually, this lens will make images that will "look" like 300mm f2.8 on a full frame, a staple in the sports and wildlife photography. However, the actual exposure will still be at f1.4, giving a two stop advantage, which will close or even exceed the "quality" gap. Price the lens in the $2000 range (need to have killer AF motor that will top the 300mm f4), and I know Olympus with the OM-D E-m1X will crack the sports market stronghold of Canon and Nikon (sorry, Sony ain't there yet in sports, their 400 f2.8 is way too expensive).
this is what happens when manufactor thinks about his customer, but that image quality.. i am sorry Joe, but i can't switch from full frame, i shoot to much low light and for 3k usd.. its not for me but i love the design of Olympus cameras
Still watching but the first change in that battery grip was definitely needed. Having to take off the battery grip to get the body battery out to charge it is crazy dumb.
Hmm.. Not paid from olympus.. Ive followed you for years and others too.. This has just nailed my thoughts on you're partnership with Olympus. It's got great technology and features but I feel that it can't be THAT good. There must be some downsides. You're passion is rocket high with how you talk about this body (and indeed) Olympus as a company. Don't get me wrong.. I started out with slr om10 & om30.. Hell I still use my vintage man glass. Even shot the super blood moon last week with my Olympus 500mm f8 on my mirrorless system. Anyway I digress. I will hold off until a final Production module rolls off before making my thoughts up on the new OM-D.
This camera is very interesting, but I've not even fully tapped out the features of my E-M1 mark 2!. As a bird/wildlfe shooter, I'm VERY interested in the 150-400mm lens. I'm sure it will kick the doors off the PanaLeica 100-400mm (good, but not great lens, imo) and will likely cost 2-3 times as much. Given it's constant aperture and that it's part Olympus' excellent PRO lens selection, it should be a superb zoom lens. I love my 300mm f4, but will likely give it up to afford this new lens. Crap! It's only January and I have to wait at least a year for it!!! And Joe, thanks for asking people to not be dumbasses!
really love mft both Panasonic and Olympus but for me this is a bit of a beast, no doubt its a great camera as Olympus produce quality gear however it detracts from the mft format light and compact , i think with model they should have gone full frame just like Panasonic have done.
In the full spec sheet for the Olympus OMD EM1X, at the first item, the sensor type is mentionned ' 4/3" '. Isn't it ' micro 4/3 ' instead of 4/3 inches ?
Unfortunately it looks too big for a smaller sensor. Everything else is good. Aren't micro four thirds "philosophy" is to bring compact, light, yet fun and simpler photography ? For the size and price, it could go for a larger sensor, just like everybody else thought. (Although I'm pretty sure... that price tag will be just a brief.)
Honestly Alan Coles - NO. You can be as doubtful as you wish - but if you listen to my words - I gave my impressions of the camera from my perspective as a people photographer. My video is not a review and does not claim to be. I very openly explained that the camera is not for everyone and never suggested that anyone should run out and buy it. I ALWAYS teach to upgrade when and only when the camera will make a significant impact on your photography or workflow. I ALWAYS teach that there is NO camera that is perfect for everyone and what may be best for me is not necessarily best for you. So you can "mmmmmm" - but I will sleep with a very clear conscience that IO have been honest and transparent and continue to do my best to help people.
@@theJoeEdelman point taken but having watched about 6 1*st impressions/reviews* of this new beast today I would expect someone to give it a thumbs down for something they didnt like....its the way things are. For instance the weight & size of this camera goes against all the ideas of a 4/3rds camera, ie small body, easy portability etc. From what I have read and seen it measures in size and weight against some of the more fashionable top end dslr's?
@@thevalleywalker "it's the way things are" lol nice reason. Maybe he didn't see those problems as an impressionist. People like Jared, can definitely point out a whole list of problems because he's coming from a perspective as a FF photographer. Joe is an Oly professional. He's already used to the type of problems that one might come across. On top of that, his impressions were mostly him listing specs and his commentary on it, rather than saying "This new Spec is good/bad compared to Sony/Nikon/Canon this is why you should/n't buy it over the competition." He says stuff like "The IBIS is better than the EM1 and no other camera supports this to this level."
I currently own a m4/3 camera. Olympus has some nice gear but has taken too long to integrate certain features. My 1st dSLR, Canon (2007) had joystick for focus selection, could add menu items to fav section and I could save my camera settings to the CF card. Having to use a computer to save/restore camera settings and update firmware is so last century. The Panasonic G9 has has the joystick on it. Olympus has dropped the ball. The joystick should have been on the E-M1.
"The wait is over...." My brain went "The WEIGHT is here..." LOL. Adding over 400 grams for a few "features" that the Mark 2 is missing doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Hope I'm wrong. Ugh - this could get rough.
I really enjoy drinking water... Must make me a "water fan boy"? Can't someone enjoy something anymore without this sophomoric label being added by people who do not share their enthusiasm? So tiresome and purpose less. Great video Joe!
It works great. Let's be clear, it is impossible to purchase a bad camera today. However, there are plenty of bad photographers. This camera was build for sports and wildlife. There is no other camera like it.
A great cut the crap video, keep up the good work. In the old (??) days, you approach would be called results oriented, as opposed to process oriented.
Maybe if you have too much Olympus glass and money to spare and nowhere else to spend? Otherwise I don't see such a huge difference compared to the M1 Mark II.
All the other top professional expert photographers like Tony Northrup,Jared Polin,Eric Rossi,DP Review said terrible things about the Olympus OM-D E-M1X especially EVF being the worst they ever seen! No dynamic range! Im shocked.
To be fair to Joe, he is an oplympus sponsored artist, just like how half of the camera review youtubers are sponsored by sony. at least Joe is an actual photographer, not like the other sony guys ..... those guys are all hail sony, and half of them are pretty shitty photographers, or should i say insta photographers.
The new modes need more computing, and that's probably the future of photography in the long run. Not just a smartphone thing. And things like Live ND, ProCapture, etc. can't work on DSLRs -- Nikon and Canon smell the computational future, too, I think and hope to establish their replacement systems before that's mandatory in every camera. Just like IBIS pretty much is now, after a decade of Olympus doing it.
No, Joe, it is an overpriced huge camera. Olympus failed to make a good camera trying to imitate other brands. This is the opposite of an Olympus camera that usually from Olympus OM-1 was compact and affordable. This is the opposite, it is an expensive catafalque, overpriced of at least 1000$ and without any kind of compactness.
Not every camera is built for everybody. This is a specialized unit, just like Canon, Nikon and such have higher end for certain users. I would like to have this unit, but the cost is a bit up there for a hobby, but many can afford and do but it. It has features that I require for wildlife photography that the small compact m4/3 don't have.
I've never heard of a camera with so many features and advancements in technology! This is a camera revolution! Exciting!

Glad you enjoyed it Valkynaz! Be sure to follow me on Instagram - instagram.com/joeedelman - I post a lot of behind the scenes images and clips!
This has surpassed all competitor's could offer.... never expected ND and multiple AF area selector !! this camera is as exciting as you !!... you didn't talk about Videos... does it shoot 4k, 60fps ?
Good job, Joe. Thanks for the review points. Helpful in making the decision to order this new body for my work.
Hello from Denmark Joe! I love your videos and specially this video, because it was this video that really makes me buy this camera! I am really impressed already with the speed and crazy AF system this camera has! I couldn't be more satisfy with the performers. Thanks and again and good shutting :-)
Thank you Juan Carlos Santos! I appreciate the comment.
Joe love your channel with all the goodies..
Thank you Eddy j. Photography! I really appreciate the kind words!
Great video Joe! Will you change your camera from E-M1 II to E-M1X for works? Why?
I'm a E-M1 user, I want to upgrade it. Should I go E-M1X? or just E-M1 II.... it bother me.
Thanks Joe! The M1X is a bit outside of my budget. For portrait I want to upgrade my EM10 iii to a EM5 or a EM1. Suggestion?
If you can afford the price jump Eric Snissaert, I would go with the E-M1 Mark II. It's an incredible camera with an incredible feature set.
This things is a beast! Thanks for the info!
You're very welcome jobanh7ify! I am glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks Joe, another nice video.
Although it is never going to be my camera, it really brings impact towards to the good direction.
I am looking forward to see the new technology in my next camera.
14 degrees f = -10 degrees C for the metric users. :)
Thank you Adam Wunker!
not a competition but I would love to see you and Jared "the fro" go 1:1 on this, especially because of your background in film and full frame.
Thank you metamurph! I appreciate the comment.
Great camera. I am sure that Olympus will find some interested buyers. I was hoping for an announcement regarding EM-10 and EM-5 lines successors.
Good one Joe. Can’t wait to try this one!
Great looking camera, all that I can say is WOW!
Glad you enjoyed it Gerald Braun! I appreciate the comment!
This camera looks awesome...I’m a fairly new shooter (about a year or so) with a Panasonic G7...was looking to step up a little and was looking at the original E-M1 or the E-M5ii or the LUMIX G85...have up to $600 or so for a body...anyone have a suggestion?
Really hope wireless tether comes to the m1 mkii. The new lens lineup has me excited for the future
OMG yes, waiting for that firmware update with great anticipation
The Eagle has landed. This thing is more like a space ship. I'd like to see how it works with classic Four Thirds lenses, which are on par with Zeiss and Leica glass.
Awesome video! I only wish it wasn't (mainly) aimed at sports and wildlife shooters. Excited about the lens !
Thanks Joe!
You're welcome Ace Photo & Video I appreciate the comment!
One of the biggest criticisms has been the poor EVF as compared to others on the market. How did you find it?
but a question, when do you chose to use the PenF instead of the E-M1?
cars aircraft motorcycles - Why no wild life tracking when its for wild life ?
un bijoux tout simplement..je rêve d'avoir une.
I think people miss the point of a large M43 Body, If you are shooting a 12 hour day wedding you need a large body - small cameras cramp your hand. the big deal with M43 is the bag over your shoulder - smaller lenses less weight.
Agreed Glen Wilson! Thanks for the comment.
Hello Sir,
Please help me out here!!
Thanks in advance!
oooh that body looks amazing. I’m talking about the camera. Man I sure hope I can afford it. Gotta start saving my pennies now.
If all those "smart" features will really work this camera will not be a fail but a revolutionary one.... If not...
I can't afford the camera but like the video anyway.
Thank you Chuc Quang! I appreciate the comment.
Thanks for your video about this great new camera Joe. This looks like an amazing camera for the pro working photographers out there. I am just a very keen amateur of many years so it is not something I really need. However if I came into some money I would treat myself and make sure I worked hard at my photography so I could do the camera justice :D
For now I will happily stick to my Pen F, OMD EM5 and my prime lenses.
I liked your video, Joe. Great job on the first impressions! 👍🏻
IM 😎
Thank you! ImpManiac Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm sure someone will do that, paristo. You know I don't do how to use gear videos.
Looks impressive. If I was a pro photographer I’d be tempted. I’m surprised they chose to orient the batteries vertically that way. If they were put flat, Olympus could have easily shaved half an inch off the size of that camera. But I’m being picky 😁
What about the viewfinder? I heard it wasn't the greatest... What's your (objective) view on that?
Awesome,
Thank you Wichien Cochari! I appreciate the comment.
I wish they release 150mm f/2 lens for micro 4/3
It does not look that much bigger than the m1-2 with a grip :-)
I don't see any very good reasons to change from the 1-2 for my use.
Agreed. The C-AF with tracking is all but pointless. I've had some success with it, which is great, but unfortunately....it's their achilles heel.
awesome
Thank you! fractal_force Glad you enjoyed it!
thanks for the info Joe, iam 65 years old and too tired of carrying big full frame camera and telephoto lens for wildlife photography, iam seriously thinking of buying this camera and lenses, iam not into video only interested in photos
You're welcome Ravi Chander I appreciate the comment!
VERY NICE CAMERA! Imagine it with a FullFrame Sensor! That´d awesome!
Fantastic Joe!! Thanks for sharing this amazing news!!...
You're very welcome Raul Farfan! I am glad you enjoyed it!
this is what happens when manufactor thinks about his customer, but that image quality.. i am sorry Joe, but i can't switch from full frame, i shoot to much low light and for 3k usd.. its not for me
but i love the design of Olympus cameras
Liked the review but no mention of price !!! AK Sood
I think the term 'micro 4/3' refers to the lens mount rather than the sensor size.
the "micro" refers to the mount. the sensor has always been 4/3.
micro 4/3 is the lens mount the sensor is 4/3
I like Fuji.
Wow.
All that processing power and the video frame rate tops out at 60? I'd think 120fps would be a given.
He was referring to the sequential shutter. For video, which Joe didn't get into, it can do 120fps at FHD.
cool
Thanks for the feedback Hczy Anly!
What is it with camera companies and their names for new models? I wanna buy a camera, not a calculator.
Hi I'm Joe, I am not paid by Olympus for this review.... *no cons in this fantastic camera* ?.....mmmmm
On top of that, his impressions were mostly him listing specs and his commentary on it, rather than saying
"This new Spec is good/bad compared to Sony/Nikon/Canon this is why you should/n't buy it over the competition."
He says stuff like "The IBIS is better than the EM1 and no other camera supports this to this level."
I wonder if Tony Northrop still thinks mft is dead?
Possibly he still does
I currently own a m4/3 camera.
The EM-1X is not that heavy when you get it in the hands. Actually, it feels really good...
I like Joe Edelman as Photographer, but when is on Olympus fan boy.
LOL - this coming from a guy who's own RUclips channel shows he watches and likes gear reviews from Manny Ortiz and Fro! Seriously Ivan Figueroa?
I really enjoy drinking water... Must make me a "water fan boy"? Can't someone enjoy something anymore without this sophomoric label being added by people who do not share their enthusiasm? So tiresome and purpose less. Great video Joe!
how does it work with baketball balls
It works great. Let's be clear, it is impossible to purchase a bad camera today. However, there are plenty of bad photographers. This camera was build for sports and wildlife. There is no other camera like it.
A great cut the crap video, keep up the good work. In the old (??) days, you approach would be called results oriented, as opposed to process oriented.
Glad you enjoyed it AlienNose! Thanks for the kind words!
they need to add more non pro lense....
Maybe if you have too much Olympus glass and money to spare and nowhere else to spend? Otherwise I don't see such a huge difference compared to the M1 Mark II.
After 2 months of buying a professional raw editing software, Olympus is announcing a new raw editing software 😣😭
I don’t think the new Panasonic is going to match this new Olympus so practically I’m going to be switching to Olympus
All the other top professional expert photographers like Tony Northrup,Jared Polin,Eric Rossi,DP Review said terrible things about the
Olympus OM-D E-M1X especially EVF being the worst they ever seen!
It's a computer with a camera surrounding it.
lol - as is every digital camera Reverend Al! This one just happens to be more powerful than most!
