Would be interesting to see what would happen if you left a bottle on a table near a window exposed to sunlight for 3-6-9-12 months. Like a table where you would put house plants; and taste it every 3 months to check where it stands along the way down to less and less drinkable. That would be a real world test of a bottle going through what a lot of people do to their whisky bottles every day.

These liquids are exposed to extreme temps while they are aging in the barrel. If you are avoiding the sunlight factor, and the bottle remains properly sealed, how would temperature exposure make a difference in the bottle?
I bought a Christmas gift set for a relative, Makers Mark in a gift set with two decorative mugs. Decided to give him a different gift and forgot that I left the gift set on the floor of the back seat of my truck. That was last December. Just took it out of the truck in June. I'll have to test out your experiment. Thanks guys!
We opened a bottle of stitzel Weller this weekend that was bottled in 1972. To our surprise......it was pretty tasty.
I'd want to see comparisons for something like half-filled bottle left in the sunlight versus unopened in sunlight compared to both left indoors, and something more like for only 1 to 2 weeks...something that could be a "Oops, I accidentally left my bottle on the deck, is it okay?" sort of time frame. And then maybe revisit these bottles a six months down the road to see if that exposure changed how it keeps when then stored indoors properly.
I would say as a future experiment, just store a closed bottle in an attic, or a garage just to see what temperatures impact would be rather than temperature in sunlight.
Interesting that it didn't taste awful. Because of Kurt, I own an OGD 114 now. About 2 years ago, he recommended for cocktails. Great stuff!
Interesting question! My two, for the moment, would be for off-the-shelf - Old Forestor 1920, and allocated - Knob Creek Cask Strength Rye (bottle in 2010 at 127 proof).
The heat is a real killer of alcohol in general and then add heat from the sun and it does nasty things. Good video!
I have mine in my garage that isn't temp controlled, and it's been up to 90 degrees in there for the past couple months. I personally haven't noticed a change, no direct sunlight though.

Just grabbed my 2nd bottle of this yesterday. Top 3 best bangs for the buck! Blue Note Uncut, Rare Breed and 114 ALL could easily charge twice as much!
I once bought a bottle on the way to play golf. I put it I’m my trunk. Heat of NC summer, 100+ degrees. After the round the cork had been pushed way up and some liquid seeped out. It only takes a few hours to do some damage, FYI.

I am curious as though how the two same whiskeys react differently from a bottle kept everything in a good condition (away from sunlight and all) except one bottle is under 69 F degree vs another one a little over 72 ~76 F degree

Starting about six months ago OGD 114 just disappeared around here. I can't find it anywhere. And I used to be able to get it on my local military base for $26.

My wife has an outdoor bar and she has a variety of bottles on the shelves - mostly chosen for looks. None are bourbon but I do wonder how some of them will taste by the end of the summer
I got a present from my brother in law Sagamore sherry finish rye. Unfortunately I realized that seal was broken and cork was half way up. (similar to GD114)I the neck of the bottle had a stain and looks like some alcohol was evaporated. Wondering if this a production quality fault or somebody opened the bottle or this bottle was outside similar to GD114 on this stream. I plan to return this bottle to the store.

Orange County NC. Almost every fancy new ABC store location they built has floor to ceiling windows on one side of the store. One store even puts the allocated stuff right in the window. I think I might avoid these locations in the future.
Maybe that explains the sour rancid oak in some of my bottles. Next time, get three bottles from the same new case (confirm the date codes are the same) and age them separately. One indoors in the dark, and two outside with one wrapped up to block the light. That would be a good follow-up. I supsect the light is more damaging than the temperature.
I keep all of my liquor in my garage which is not climate controlled in an old DataCom cabinet I converted for that purpose. I can say that I find no ill effect on my whiskey's, rums. teqiuilas, etc. I have had it this way for 10 plus years.
Some people say heat adversely effects bourbon but I don't think it does. Now direct sunlight and UV
..that's another story
We haven't had Old Grand-Dad 114 here in *months* - perhaps as long as a year, but certainly since January, which I know because that's when I decided I wanted to buy a bottle.
But to see a bottle of whiskey outside for months, and not bring it in... That's alcohol abuse. 🙂

I would take a fresh bottle of 101 and separate it into sample bottles. Leave one inside the house on a window sill that gets direct sunlight. One outside on that window sill. One inside out of direct sunlight but still in the open room. One outside in a box that protects it from direct sunlight. And a control that’s kept inside in a cabinet.
Actually the Whiskey Tribe guys did that....the results were as you would expect. Probably more dramatic than you would expect actually.
Howdy folks! I hear that OGD is going allocated at times( I have plenty stockpiled) but not here in Tex. Still in low 20 s as well.
Can you guys do some comparisons where you have bottles that have been open a while (> 6 months). And another that is fresher? I've noticed you often have bottles that have been open a while and I've read (and noticed) that the bourbon in bottles that have been opened a while just isn't the same. Sometimes the juice in the open bottle seems to get a bad rap, but I think it could be because it's been open so long (Weller 12 yr I'm looking at you!). Maybe you can discuss your findings on this a bit! Thanks!
Sounds like that ground, iffy flavuor, maybe woody, couldve come from the cork no? Considering it was a little in? Maybe partially desintegrated?
Good information. I hate to think of a whole bottle of OGD 114 being poured down the drain, but I guess there is nothing else to do with it.

The only bottle of OGD 114 I have purchased, tasted like moth balls. Maybe mine was stored at the dump for about a year.

I once left a half bottle of bushmills og recipe for months in the car during a Cali summer so temps up to 130+ maybe but no direct sunlight i swear the nose and taste were amazing after i should got a new bottle to compare but i don't remember it being that good before being left in the car
I keep my whisky out of direct sunlight, but the room gets quite hot. Over 80 (80-85). Drunning the aircon there all the time is not an option Do you think the heat in the room could effect effect the whisky?

I also live in Indiana and just picked up my first bottle of 114 while up in Michigan for work last week. Had my first sip last night to try while watching this video lol
As a comparison (since I've never done it w/a bottle of whiskey) w/wines that are too old or have gotten left in the sun it tends to taste a little 'burnt'. There may still be remnants of the original flavors, but a red wine will even look brown and unclear in the glass & the palate tends to be bland.
If you bury it, it will probably react fine...there is a reason wine, and particularly champagnes, are often stored in caves.
I'd like some slb whiskey glasses like you used, do you sell them?
Another channel...don't remember which one...placed duplicate bottles in the freezer (as some one had suggested). Then tasted the two bottles side-by-side.
I would think that Trent lost some of the alcohol...due to the lower boiling point of ethyl alcohol...so that is probably why the cork pushed out a bit. With the alcohol, the flavor probably dulled.

It’s my understanding the bigger issue is the sunlight. This why whiskey was often kept in ceramic jugs. One the ceramic helps keep it cool. But more importantly, keep the sun light out. Gotta remember, they didn’t have refrigeration or
a/c in those days. I remember several jugs and ceramic/clay bottles my grand dad had from before he was old enough to drink.
I've had friends who stored their higher proof bourbons in a freezer to calm down the proof notes. For myself, I've shyed away from this thinking that the alcohol vapors were part of the tasting experience, and would be greatly reduced. Have y'all acquired any knowledge regarding this practice? When each of my two kids were born I bought a bottle, opened and had a drink with my dad. Corked them and have kept them in the basement liquor cabinet since. My daughter is 17 now and my plan was to open it back up and have a drink with her when she reached the appropriate age. Hers is a bottle of Crown. My son is 12 and his bottle of Makers is waiting for him in the same spot. I just assumed the bottles would last indefinitely… now I am worried that what I thought would be a great idea might turn out to be a bust. Here’s hoping they haven’t skunked in that time.

I picked up a bottle of 114 in March after I ran out. I was shocked at the musty flavor I got. It was disgusting. I left it sit on the shelf for a month and tried it again. Still a musty flavor. I don't know why there was such a difference between the two, but it is night and day. It's still sitting 5 months later with 2 pours out of it. Contemplating pouring it out.
I found one in early June and had the same experience, it’s not good but I will never return to that bottle of OGD 114 that I have… just glad it was $25.99 bs more expensive
Somebody below suggested storing a bottle in a hot place, no climate control, but out of direct sunlight. That suggests a cool test. Buy 3 identical bottles. Store one in a dark place, with no climate control; store the 2nd in a place that is climate controlled, but that gets a lot of direct sunlight and store the third one like "normal" (basement). Sample all 3 in 6 months and report. :-)

I have a bottle of whiskey that I left in the camper over the winter. I know it has seen 140 degrees temperature range here in Montana over the past 8 months. I am going to get it and a new bottle, and I will let you all know what I find. love the content keep up the good work.
Crazy how 114 is allocated in IN. I walked into Binny's yesterday and they had an entire shelf full, and of course I had to buy a back up lol.

I’d say the heat got to the cork, and that wet hot cork transferred to the whiskey.
