  • *NOW IN HD RETAKE!
    Finally, I got the opportunity to revisit this historic department store and did a retake of these beautiful gated OTIS elevators!
    These six elevators were installed in 1933 and have been operated by attendants since the building was opened. According to elevator filmer e233100's latest videos of these elevators (links are near the bottom), they have recently been modernized again into Gen2 in 2013-14. The last modernization according to him was around 1990s when the fixtures were vintage square Lexan push buttons (old footage included in this video as a flashback).
    Now here's an interesting fact that someone told me. You see a vintage crank in the COP? This is not used to manually controlling the elevator. Instead, it is used to start and "lock" the elevator. After the doors closed, she pushes the floor button, turns on the crank and the elevator moves. When it stops, she turns the crank back to it's original position (neutral). In this position, the elevator won't move unless to turn the crank. No matter how many floor buttons you pressed, it won't move. Notice that after the doors closed and some of the floor buttons have been pressed, the elevator didn't move.
    The solution of this crank, I believe, is to prevent people from operating the elevator by their own except the attendant, giving the fact of how historic these elevators are and attendants have long been operating these elevators. The crank is like a lock switch to me, or whatever you want to call it. In this case, this is an EXTREMELY RARE configuration in an OTIS Gen2! I have never seen a modernized historic elevator like this anywhere else before!
    I surely hope that these elevators will not be replaced into boring modern ones and would still be running for more than 100 years. Hope you enjoy this video!

    Very modern for 1933. Those digital indicators are really innovative for 1933

    I notice that a lot of older Otis elevators used the greek key design in the upper part of the car. Nice to see these elevators being kept in manual operation with gates.

    • @elevatorsbyliftfilmer1247
      @elevatorsbyliftfilmer1247 5 лет назад

      They're not manually operated. The crank doesn't move the lift, it's only used to start the motor once a floor is selected. As long as the crank is in the center of the COP with the handle up, the lift won't move. You have to turn the crank after pressing a button to get it to move.

    • @shortliner68

      I guess I should have more accurately said,
      "attendant operated", although there is still a manual element to their operation other than simply entering the car and pushing a button. The downtown dept. store elevators we used to have in the city where I grew up had one handle to open/close the hoistway door and car gate and the car switch handle for starting/stopping/direction. The only buttons were for clearing the floor indicator lights on the panel. I believe they were also Otis elevators. Those cars had quick operating pneumatic doors that sometimes made a slight hissing or whistle sound when they developed a small air leak. By the time the last store closed up in 1983, it happened to be the last one to have kept its attendant operated lifts. I always enjoyed shopping there just because they kept the attendant lifts when the other stores automated theirs back in the 1960s. Though a few years before the closure the car gates had been replaced with solid doors and the pneumatic door systems replaced with electric.

    IDLift3000, she's not using her arm to move the doors. You see the crank? When the doors close, that's because she pulled the handle down to close it. She just puts her arm out when she pulls it down. When the doors open, she pushes the handle back into it's 'raised' position. As long as the handle stays up, the door will stay open. And as long as she keeps the handle down, the door will remain closed until she raises the handle again.

    Seems like someone has filmed this elevator slightly before the 1990s mod and when the doors are still manual: ruclips.net/video/ULnW4obBWfY/видео.html .
    Idk if he meant this building or the other building, but I suspect the elevators looked like that before the mods. Several old shopping centers in Japan have similar elevators too, most of which have been modded by OTIS or replaced....

      @@idl3k_elev I understand a little bit of it. When she closes the doors, she says "Omataseitashimashita." (Sorry to keep you waiting.) When she steps out, she'll announce either "Ue e mairimasu, ue de gozaimasu" (used if the elevator is going up) or "Shita e mairimasu, shita de gozaimasu" (used if the elevator is going down). When saying the floor the elevator is making a stop on, she'll say "Chika ni-kai" (Basement Two Floor ), Chika i-kai" (Basement One Floor), "i-kai"" (First Floor), "Ni-kai" (Second Floor), "San-kai" (Third Floor), "Yon-kai" (Fourth Floor), "Go-kai" (Fifth Floor) "Ro-kai" (Sixth Floor) "Nana-kai" (Seventh Floor), "Hachi-kai" (Eighth Floor), and "Okujo" (Rooftop), . As for what she's saying as to what that floor contains, I can only understand what it is when the elevator is taking someone to the 6th floor. When the elevator has to stop to pick someone up, she'll say the floor number, and then "Sho-sho omachi kudasai mase" (Please wait a moment). When letting someone on, she says "Irasshaimase" (Welcome or Come on in) As for everything else spoken, I cannot understand it.
