The Eastwood Dam is NOT a gravity dam. The multi-arch design substituted structural elements for the solidity of gravity dams and greatly reduced the cost. Engineering calculations made in the early 2000's indicated that the dam was slightly top-heavy with the Route 18 roadway on top. It had been there since 1924. That's why the new bridge was constructed and the old roadway removed.. You can also see additional improvements on the back face of the dam for seismic reinforcement. Although the dam design never included a seismic analysis, it has survived numerous serious earthquakes in Southern California without damage. This dam was built almost without any internal steel reinforcement ("rebar") since none was available at the time of construction.
Great video! Great to know that so many people care about BB and do what they can to keep the area free of trash and debris to keep it looking beautiful ❤❤😊😊
Thank you, Daniel, for posting this. Our family has been vacationing in Big Bear almost every summer for the past 25 years, and it has been disheartening to see the lake level as low as its been. I check the BBMWD lake level report every Tuesday, but it falls way short of your videos. I can't wait for this Summer.
Thank you for watching! Hope you shared my channel with your family and friends, I’m sure they would enjoy it as well. It’s going to be a wonderful summer, indeed! Stay tuned!
Thank you for the report. I have a cabin reservation for the first week of July and is nice to see how everything is " flowing " at my favorite southern california spot.
1924! Wow, the bridge will be celebrating its 100 year birthday next year! That is wonderful to hear and so glad you were able to fill us in, thank you so much!
I found you video though the big bear tag my aunt told me that when it gets warmer the snaller lake dries up and kills all the turtles. That made me so sad i wanted to call peta when it happens. Can they be saved with a team if people.
Hello, I'm not sure which smaller lakes your aunt was referred to, perhaps Erwin Lake or Baldwin Lake? I have only seen turtle on Big Bear Lake and luckily it never dries up (completely). It would be horrible to know that turtles are dying, hope that isn't happening up here.
Thanks so much Dan!!! I had asked you to get me video of Boulder bay! I own one of the condo right there and have not been able to get up there since last May wow the level blows me away! That bay at one time was some of the greatest trout fishing👍👍👍 thank you again awesome video!!!!
My pleasure, Frank! Boulder bay is looking so impressive. We might actually try to get our boat in the inner part of the bay this year for the first time!
Thank you, Lori! Stay tuned for more lake updates, and feel free to share the video with your friends/family, I appreciate all the times you’ve watched my videos and commented, u are awesome 👏
Of course John, thanks for continuing to watch my channel. In a future video I will show ya'll the past clean ups I've done on the shoreline and forest. I'm excited to show everyone!
Dan you guys need to protect your soils in the creek from errossion. One rock dams, Zuni bowls and other erosion control. If the weather pattern is going to be wetter than normal we need to keep as much water in the creeks by restoring the creeks ability to have some flood plain areas. Something to research for Earthday.
You bet! It’s been a fun journey, tracking the lake coming up so quickly, I figure this is a once every 15 or 20 year event, so better make good on sharing it with my viewers! Stay tuned for even more!
Thanks for showing Grout Bay. Looks awesome. I bet Captain John's is happy. They kept moving the docks out further and further. Now they can bring them in. Lots of waterfalls off 38 and Forest Falls area too.
Oh heck yeah for sure, captain John is happy, I just went paddle boarding there yesterday, and was shocked to see how much is in grout bay and how close his docks are, right up to the landing. I hope to go down Highway 38 soon to see the flow down there.
Hi Wayne, thanks for watching the video. You are correct, it's THAT Big Bear Lake, about 2 hours from LA. It's a small city within a valley that includes unincorporated areas with a population of about 21,000 and is known for it's history of gold mining back in the mid 1800s, snow sports in the winter, lake related activities, off-roading, hiking, mountain biking and is an amazing 4 season resort area loved by many southern Californians as well as folks from all over the state, the country and beyond!
Exactly! It was so cool looking through the records and seeing how much more water was in the lake back in those days, hopefully some balance is returning
Nice! The Boulder Bay area is really picturesque. Beautiful to see the water running and levels rising and hearing the water as well. Thanks, for making these videos from a walking standpoint. Btw ..I don't like seeing litter or graffiti either. People need to be more aware of what they are doing and how it harms nature and the aesthetics of such a beautiful place. People need to take more pride in what is given to them in the form of recreation and scenery and how fortunate we all are to live in an area that is just absolutely beautiful no matter where you are on the map. Keep it beautiful! ✌️ 🌎♻️🌲🌺🌼🎍🏵️🦅🐺🐿️🐦🐻
Thank you! I fully agree, the trashing of our natural areas has to stop. It is amazing how our community up here is so connected with cleaning up the mess the tourists tend to leave. Some people consider the National Forest a "park" and just think there are services that are employed to clean up daily, and some I'm sure just don't care/are ignorant. It's sad, but on a positive note, love wins! I've seen the areas that routinely get trashed begin to get cleaned up several times a year in the past few years. I will be putting out a video soon that highlights the clean ups I've done myself and the groups I've organized. Stay tuned....and yes, Keep it Beautiful ❤
Congratulations 🍾🎈 on 1000 subscribers! Love Fawnskin. My mom worked at the soda fountain while in high school… love that it doesn’t change much . And the same with Grout Bay. Back in the old days, she would ice skate there. Fond memories for sure! 💜.
Congrats on 1,000 subs Daniel 🎉. We appreciate your vids-the info and your chill vibe. So relaxing to watch. Oh, and a HUGE thank you for being so environmentally aware and helping to keep Big Bear beautiful! 😃👊🏼
Love it! Thank you for everything and feel free to share with your friends and family hoping to get to 2000 subs quicker than it took to get to 1000 lol
Cool, thank you Samuel! I don't watch any other Big Bear creators videos or even look at their thumbnails, I like to do my own thing haha. Maybe we inspire each other one way or another, which is great I suppose 😉Yep, lots of snow left on the ski areas, about 40-50 inch base, but around town and the neighborhoods it is pretty much melted. With these soaring temps (going to be in the low 70s in a day or so) it's not gonna stick around for long....
With the lake rising high enough to cover the brush that was growing close to the previous shoreline, I've noticed that bass fishing seems to be a thing now. I've caught incidental bass while trout fishing, but it hasn't been a great bass fishing lake (in my opinion anyway) in the recent past.
The fishing that I’ve done has only been from docks, and just a trout or two, it’ll be great to see if people can bring in some more bass this year and hopefully the carp numbers stay down
@@Reach41 That's awesome! We actually have a boat as well, going to be launching sometimes in the next week or so. We do a bunch of wakesurfing on the glassy mornings mostly, hope to see ya out there! My boat is pretty easy to spot, red/black Malibu, and if we're partying you'll hear the speakers wailing for miles haha
Thanks for the tour, well done.
Anytime! 🙏 👍
I know this guy !!!!!!!
Haha yup!! 😘😁😆
Me too!!!!

That is a great suggestion, thank you! Erosion is a serious issue indeed.
